Achieving cyber security has become a top priority, and has become one of the most crucial areas of study and research in IT. This book introduces readers to perhaps the most effective tool in achieving a secure environment, i.e. cryptography. This book offers more solved examples than most books on the subject, it includes state of the art topics and discusses the scope of future research.

Book excerpt: Radio amateurs love building antennas. Building on the top-selling Hand-carried QRP antennas, this practical manual describes more than thirty portable antennas and accessories to build and try. And you'll find a sprinkling of reviews, ideas and theory articles. With the basics covered in the first volume, More Hand-carried QRP antennas gets straight down to business with descriptions of over thirty antenna projects. There are also some background articles and ideas for the antenna experimenter.Complementing the lower-HF focus of the first volume, More Hand-carried QRP antennas devotes more attention to upper HF, VHF and UHF antennas. But you'll still find projects for bands down to 1.8 MHz. Everything presented has been built and tested by the author over almost 30 years of successful QRP activity. More Hand-carried QRP antennas is available in ebook format with a paperback edition coming soon. It's the author's seventh book, following on from popular previous titles for QRP operators, antenna builders, radio beginners and more.

Book excerpt: The first part of this book covers the key concepts of cryptography on an undergraduate level, from encryption and digital signatures to cryptographic protocols. Essential techniques are demonstrated in protocols for key exchange, user identification, electronic elections and digital cash. In the second part, more advanced topics are addressed, such as the bit security of one-way functions and computationally perfect pseudorandom bit generators. The security of cryptographic schemes is a central topic. Typical examples of provably secure encryption and signature schemes and their security proofs are given. Though particular attention is given to the mathematical foundations, no special background in mathematics is presumed. The necessary algebra, number theory and probability theory are included in the appendix. Each chapter closes with a collection of exercises. In the second edition the authors added a complete description of the AES, an extended section on cryptographic hash functions, and new sections on random oracle proofs and public-key encryption schemes that are provably secure against adaptively-chosen-ciphertext attacks. The third edition is a further substantive extension, with new topics added, including: elliptic curve cryptography; Paillier encryption; quantum cryptography; the new SHA-3 standard for cryptographic hash functions; a considerably extended section on electronic elections and Internet voting; mix nets; and zero-knowledge proofs of shuffles. The book is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, mathematics, and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s time we cleared the air about ham radio. If you think of it as staticky transmissions sent by people in the middle of nowhere, think again. Today’s ham radio goes beyond wireless to extreme wireless, Operators transmit data and pictures, use the Internet, laser, and microwave transmitters, and travel to places high and low to make contact. In an emergency or natural disaster, ham radio can replace downed traditional communication and save lives. Whether you’re just getting turned on to ham radio or already have your license, Ham Radio for Dummies helps you with the terminology, the technology and the talknology. You discover how to: Decipher the jargon and speak the language Buy or upgrade your equipment, including the all-important antennas Build a ham radio shack, complete with the rig, a computer, mobile/base rig, microphones, keys, headphones, antennas, cables and feedlines Study for your license, master Morse code, take the test and get your call sign Understand the basics of ragchews (conversations), nets (organized on-air meetings) and DX-ing (competing in contacts to make contacts) Keeping logs with the vital statistics, including time (in UTC or World Time), frequency, and call sign Written by Ward Silver, an electrical engineer, Certified Amateur Radio License Examiner, and columnist for QST, a monthly magazine for ham operators, Ham Radio for Dummies gives you the info you need to delve into the science or dive into the conversation. It explains how you can: Tune in to the most common types of signals, including Morse Code (CW), single-sideband (SSB), FM, Radioteletype (RTTY), and data signals Break in, introduce yourself, converse, and say or signal goodbye Communicate while traveling (ham radio goes where mobile phones go dead) Register with an emergency organization such as ARES and RACES Help in emergencies such as earthquakes, wildfires, or severe weather Pursue your special interests, including contacting distant stations, participating in contests, exploring the digital modes, using satellites, transmitting images, and more Complete with a glossary and ten pages of additional suggested resources, Ham Radio for Dummies encourages you to touch that dial and take that mike. Book excerpt: The book is primarily intended as a textbook on modern algebra for undergraduate mathematics students. It is also useful for those who are interested in supplementary reading at a higher level. The text is designed in such a way that it encourages independent thinking and motivates students towards further study. The book covers all major topics in group, ring, vector space and module theory that are usually contained in a standard modern algebra text. In addition, it studies semigroup, group action, Hopf's group, topological groups and Lie groups with their actions, applications of ring theory to algebraic geometry, and defines Zariski topology, as well as applications of module theory to structure theory of rings and homological algebra. Algebraic aspects of classical number theory and algebraic number theory are also discussed with an eye to developing modern cryptography. Topics on applications to algebraic topology, category theory, algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory, cryptography and theoretical computer science interlink the subject with different areas. Each chapter discusses individual topics, starting from the basics, with the help of illustrative examples. This comprehensive text with a broad variety of concepts, applications, examples, exercises and historical notes represents a valuable and unique resource.

Book excerpt: Minimum QRP is full of ideas for the radio amateur who wants to get the most from their modest station and antenna. Apply its tested strategies today for more success on the bands, whether you're into portable operating, DX, awards, contests or more. While pitched at the QRPer, those with 100 watts and simple antennas will also find much of interest. It's for a broad audience, including newcomers, the more experienced and those returning to amateur radio. After touring various facets of QRP, Minimum QRP gives some forthright but often forgotten advice on equipment. Is the commercial, kit or homebrew transceiver you're considering sufficient to give spontaneous contacts almost any time you switch on? This book guides you through the choices out there, with an emphasis on affordable and effective. Antennas are next. One size and type does not fit all. The right choice depends on location, style of operating and activity patterns in your area. Some suggestions, based on the author's extensive experience of restricted space and portable QRP, are given here. Some QRPers have suitable equipment and antennas yet don't make as many contacts as they should. Reasons for this can come down to choice of band, understanding local activity and operating technique. Whether you're after DX or a local ragchew, Minimum QRP gives some crafty tips on working the most with the least. Nearly every aspect of amateur radio can be done with five watts. Indeed QRP can sometimes add to its enjoyment due to simple to construct and lightweight equipment. If you get bored with one facet there's always another. You'll find information on such QRP sub-interests, such as weak signal modes, VHF and pedestrian mobile in this book. Still not sure? View some of the author's other material at http://www.vk3ye.com and http://www.youtube.com/vk3ye , With much new content, Minimum QRP consolidates the author's experience in the one reference. With over 200 pages and numerous illustrations it represents excellent value.
