It focuses on the delay constrained minimum cost tree (or constrained Steiner tree) problem; that is, it constructs a multicast tree that not only meets the constrained end-to-end delay requirements but also is the minimum cost multicast tree. This problem is known to be NP-complete. The existing distributed multicast routing algorithms that are based on heuristics do not consider a network environment where node failures occur. As a result, these algorithms will fail to complete the construction of a multicast tree when node failures occur during the construction period. Moreover, they will fail to maintain the constructed multicast tree if node failures occur after the construction period and during the on-going multicast session. In both cases, these algorithms will have to be restarted. We propose two new distributed delay constrained multicast routing algorithms that provide QoS guarantees even in networks where node failures occur. One is shortest path (SP) based and the other is minimum spanning tree (MST) based. They are capable of constructing a delay constrained multicast tree when node failures occur during the tree construction period and recovering from any node failure in a multicast tree during the on-going multicast session without interrupting the running traffic on the unaffected portion of the tree. The proposed SP-based or MST-based algorithms perform the failure recovery efficiently, which give better performance in terms of the number of exchanged messages and the convergence time than the existing distributed SP-based or MST-based delay constrained multicast routing algorithms in a network where node failures occur, respectively. The existing distributed delay constrained multicast routing algorithms can be classified either as an MST-based heuristic or as a SP-based heuristic. Two representative algorithms i.e., DKPP and DSPH are MST and SP based heuristics, respectively. The MST based algorithms like DKPP run with a high message and time complexity of O(n3). Book excerpt: This book focuses on core functionalities for wireless real-time multi-hop networking with TDMA (time-division multiple access) and their integration into a flexible, versatile, fully operational, self-contained communication system. The use of wireless real-time communication technologies for the flexible networking of sensors, actuators, and controllers is a crucial building block for future production and control systems. WirelessHART and ISA 100.11a, two technologies that have been developed predominantly for industrial use, are currently available. However, a closer analysis of these approaches reveals certain deficits. Current research on wireless real-time communication systems shows potential to remove these limitations, resulting in flexible, versatile, and robust solutions that can be implemented on today’s low-cost and resource-constrained hardware platforms. Unlike other books on wireless communication, this book presents protocols located on MAC layer and above, and build on the physical (PHY) layer of standard wireless communication technologies.

Book excerpt: Several emerging applications of the current and next generation Internet, e.g. IP radio, IP TV, and video and audio conferencing, etc., involve one-to-many and many-to-many data communications called multicasting. Many real-time applications over IP, such as IP Telephony and video conferencing, can not operate with the best effort service provided by current IP networks. To support such applications, IP networks need to provide certain quality of service (QoS) assurances. Most of QoS-based multicast routing protocols are based on a "flat" routing model that do not scale well for large size networks. This thesis proposes QHMRP, a novel QoS-aware hierarchical multicast routing protocol. The scalability issue is addressed by organizing the network as a hierarchy of domains using the full-mesh aggregation technique. The concept of domain 'controller' is used for coordinating the creation and maintenance of multicast trees. The protocol uses a novel reverse flooding approach to connect host routers with the tree while satisfying end-to-end QoS constraints. This is a distributed algorithm, which uses only local state information at each router. The worst-case connection time and message overhead are estimated and analysis shows that QHMRP constructs loop-free multicast trees. Simulation results show that the message overhead of QHMRP is much smaller than that of the flat routing protocol using reverse flooding.

Book excerpt: The demand to exchange digital information using wireless communication system is growing fast nowadays. When there are independent mobiles users participating in sharing resources or interacting with each other, like wireless video sharing and interactive games, and no centralized connectivity is used, the application can be treated as the application of Mobile Ad Hoc Network. Two multicast routing protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) were proposed. The multicast routing protocol without Quality-of-Service (QoS) support aimed at improving packet delivery ratio. Data delivery tree was built on top of the mesh structure. The mesh structure was updated when there was no data delivery tree to cover all receivers. The branch of the tree was selected based on the link stability prediction. To do so, Packet Delivery Prediction (PDP) was introduced. Models like battery model and route selection model were used at every node in the system to predict the stability of the node/link and make date delivery decision according to the scheme defined. The multicast routing protocol with QoS support aimed at providing Quality of Service to real-time applications. Bandwidth and delay were the two major considerations for the proposed QoS-enabled protocol. The nodes in the system monitored the bandwidth consumption of itself as well as the neighboring nodes. Real-time traffic flow was admitted or rejected at the source based on the bandwidth availability feedback of the intermediate nodes. For admitted real-time traffic flow, the resource was set aside for a specific period of time, which was designed to take into account the mobility and packet inter-arrival delay requirement. Simulation showed the QoS-disabled as well as QoS-enabled multicast routing protocol can achieve their major design goal. The QoS-enabled routing protocol can admit or reject real-time traffic flow according to available bandwidth at the nodes. Real-time traffic was better served using QoS-enabled multi.

These filters will be used to enable private communication among selected members of the multicast tree. With these filters, a multicast tree can be used to support one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to- many communication concurrently by reusing the paths and resources of the existing multicast tree. We theoretically, and through simulations, study the savings in time and network resources of using the network filter compared with building a new multicast tree for every new communication request. All the three aspects of network communication - mobility routing, QoS routing and network filters - are studied as a whole to develop a multicast-based mobile QoS routing protocol that is efficient, scalable and robust for use by both fixed and mobile devices in an infrastructure-based wireless network.
