Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As educators, we cannot change the students who come into our schools; what we can change is our approach to working with them. In Pyramid of Behavior Interventions, the authors ask educators to commit to proactively serving all students and anticipating their needs. This book will help teachers and school leaders transform the research on student behavior, response to intervention, and professional learning communities into practical strategies they can use to create superior school and classroom climates and cultures in which learning is primed to occur. The authors argue that students will experience frustration, confusion, and perhaps failure if they do not have clearly articulated routines, structures, and expectations for their learning environment. They use a three-tiered pyramid of behavior model as the basis for their continuum of effective schoolwide behavior support. They provide: Seven keys to a positive learning environment: common expectations, targeted instruction, positive reinforcement, support strategies and interventions, collaborative teams, data-driven dialogue, and a schoolwide systems approach Structures and strategies for schoolwide positive discipline Assistance to school teams to create and maintain core vision and values Tools to help develop data-driven dialogue with a focus on results Systems for providing pyramids of intervention to support behavior The authors use examples of real schools making a difference with real kids. They support these real-life examples with current research, especially the work around effective schools, PLCs, and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS). The authors believe educators have a responsibility to teach and reach all students with expectations for social behavior as well as academics. They approach teaching students to manage their emotions and act appropriately and responsibly much like teaching academic skills. The authors present the concept of a behavior matrix to identify specific settings around the school and articulate the behaviors expected in those areas. The matrix includes: Common schoolwide expectations Positively phrased, global expectations Identification of specific settings Description of observable behaviors Use of age-appropriate language They then describe strategies for implementing the behavior matrix. They also include specific strategies for targeted instruction and positive reinforcement, specific support and intervention strategies, information on how to build data-driven dialogue within collaborative teams, and a detailed five-step approach for how staff can structure their schoolwide efforts.

As individuals with ASD mature, their needs change as well. The book reviews the growing research base and describes ways to support adolescents and adults in succeeding in higher education and work, living independently, enjoying leisure activities, navigating meaningful personal relationships, and more. Specific behavioral and instructional interventions--such as functional communication training, positive behavior support, and applied behavior analysis--are discussed. Case examples illustrate practical aspects of applying the strategies in real-world school and community settings.

Book excerpt: "In Behavior Solutions: Teaching Academic and Social Skills Through RTI at Work, authors John Hannigan, Jessica Djabravan Hannigan, Mike Mattos, and Austin Buffum address the role that student behaviors and emotional states play in schools and describe how students are generally lacking the support they need to pursue positive behaviors. This systemic behavior gap can be bridged, the authors state, by utilizing the PLC framework and RTI process to create a system of behavioral supports in multiple tiers (prevention, intervention, and remediation). However, success in this effort requires schoolwide structures that are collaborative, research-based, and practical. As such, this book provides the guidance necessary to integrate and apply essential behavior standards, processes, tools, and resources that allow the reader's school to function as a PLC that provides behavioral support at all 3 tiers through a thorough implementation of the RTI process. Readers will be able to utilize this book to develop a strong, collaborative PLC structure in their school that successfully addresses the behavioral needs of all of their students"--

This comprehensive implementation guide covers every element required to build a successful RTI at WorkTM program in schools. The authors share step-by-step actions for implementing the essential elements, instructional strategies, and tools needed to support implementation, as well as tips for engaging and supporting educators. Readers who valued the practical knowledge in Learning by Doing: A Handbook for Professional Learning Communities at WorkTM (DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, Many, and Mattos) will appreciate a similar style and practicality in Taking Action. This guide will help you incorporate the response to intervention process by allowing you to: Understand how RTI at WorkTM builds on the PLC at WorkTM process. Review the revised RTI at WorkTM pyramid and its three RTI tiers. Learn what roles teacher teams, leadership teams, and schoolwide teams play in a multi-tiered intervention structure. Understand the differences among intervention, extension, prevention, and enrichment. Avoid common missteps when implementing RTI (or MTSS). Consider why an achievement gap remains in 21st century education and how the RTI process can close that gap.

The documented links between behavior and social problems have compelled governments and organizations to prioritize and mobilize efforts to develop effective, evidence-based means to promote adaptive behavior change. In recognition of this impetus, The Handbook of Behavior Change provides comprehensive coverage of contemporary theory, research, and practice on behavior change. It summarizes current evidence-based approaches to behavior change in chapters authored by leading theorists, researchers, and practitioners from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, behavioral science, economics, philosophy, and implementation science. It is the go-to resource for researchers, students, practitioners, and policy makers looking for current knowledge on behavior change and guidance on how to develop effective interventions to change behavior.
