Book excerpt: Pygmalion' is a play by George Bernard Shaw. It is named after a Greek mythological figure. In this play, Professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins, makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women's independence.

Book excerpt: "Ever since Pygmalion opened in London in April 1914 it has proved a very controversial play, from the (then) shocking language, to arguments about its correct ending. Critical interpretations have been similarly disputatious, encompassing views of the transformation of the impoverished Eliza Doolittle by phonetics expert Henry Higgins as either a story of economic and social liberation, or an example of the perpetuation of male control and self-interest." This new edition of Pygmalion includes George Bernard Shaw's definitive text, with both Preface and Sequel, and provides the most comprehensive scholarly treatment of the play to date.

Book excerpt: Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological figure. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913.In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The general idea of that myth was a popular subject for Victorian era British playwrights, including one of Shaw's influences, W. S. Gilbert, who wrote a successful play based on the story called Pygmalion and Galatea that was first presented in 1871. Shaw would also have been familiar with the burlesque version, Galatea, or Pygmalion Reversed. Shaw's play has been adapted numerous times, most notably as the 1938 film Pygmalion, the 1956 musical My Fair Lady and its 1964 film version.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pygmalion: A Romance in Five Acts AS will be seen later on, Pygmalion needs, not a preface, but a sequel, which I have supplied in its due place. The English have no respect for their language, and will not teach their children to speak it. They cannot spell it because they have nothing to spell it with but an old foreign alphabet of which only the consonants - and not all of them - have any agreed speech value. Consequently no man can teach himself what it should sound like from reading it; and it is impossible for an Englishman to Open his mouth without making some other Englishman despise him. Most European languages are now accessible in black and white to foreigners: English and French are not thus accessible even to Englishmen and Frenchmen. The reformer we need most today is an energetic phonetic enthusiast: that is why I have made such a one the hero of a popular play. Book excerpt: Pygmalion (1913) is a play by George Bernard Shaw loosely inspired by the Greek myth of the same name. In Pygmalion, George Bernard Shaw radically reworks Ovid's tale with a feminist twist: while Henry Higgins successfully teaches Eliza Doolittle to speak and act like a duchess, she adamantly refuses to be his creation. First produced in 1914, it remains one of Shaw's most popular plays. Pygmalion uses wit and insight into England's 1800s arrogant class system to show that class is not bred, but made, and the highest class of people see no class at all, being humble enough to know we are equals. Shaw's "Pygmalion" was not written just to add to his wallet with its publication, but to influence society, much the same as Charles Dickens "Oliver Twist" and "David Copperfield" have. From the plot of whether or not a pauper can made a princess to the subplot of love and true romance, the story is intertwined with memorable characters, delightful banter and intriguing thoughts. Pygmalion tells the story of Professor Henry Higgins, who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can successfully pass off a Cockney flower girl as a refined society lady by teaching her how to speak with an upper class accent and training her in etiquette. In the process, Higgins and Eliza grow close, but she ultimately rejects his domineering ways and marries Freddy Eynsford-Hill - a young, poor, gentleman. The word Pygmalion finds its origins in Greece. The story of a slave (Artuss Pygmalius) turned prince after his true blood lines were discovered.

Book excerpt: Pygmalion is one of Shaw's most accessible and entertaining plays; its characters-particularly Professor Higgins and his pupil Eliza Doolittle-have become household names. The fame of Pygmalion has been both enhanced and undermined by the musical adaptation My Fair Lady. This is a fresh, up to date and accessibly written critical edition for literature and drama students. An authoritative and academically rigorous edition, edited by the Shaw Estate and international Shaw expert, Len Connolly. Students will find a wealth of information to guide their studies: an extended introduction exploring theatrical and historical context, critical reactions to Pygmalion, background on the author, stage history and character analysis. It also includes Shaw's original Preface, the Pygmalion and Galatea myth (Ovid) and Shaw's rehearsal notes for the 1914 premiere. The play itself contains numerous notes and explanations throughout to aid the student's understanding. -- Publisher description.
