Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcie was desperate to find out what was wrong with her. The constant depression with antidepressants and tranquilizers since the age of twelve; too many suicide attempts to count; migraines that caused her to hit her head against the wall; lost time she could not remember; and numerous psychiatrists, but no answers. There had to be an answer. Almost by accident she starts seeing a Christian psychologist who wants to find the answer too. Her feeling of losing control; her rapid mood swings; her nightmares about a closet door; these all led to an unexpected discovery. A poem she wrote in therapy led them to believe that her inner child was hiding in a closet. But why? A dream revealed a closet full of children that she was hiding. Twenty-seven of them to be exact. Who were they? What did this mean? More therapy revealed that they were all parts of her. Alternate personalities that had lived through: the sexual abuse as a child by her father and others, the rejection by her mother, who blamed her - a three year old; the horrifying rituals of a satanic cult; the torture she endured from them; the rapes, even by a religious clergyman. It all spelled out Multiple Personality Disorder. She had dissociated and alters were created to live through the horror and terror of her childhood. She would have to relive these memories that they had been keeping. Only through the help of God, and the caring therapists, was she able to live through the eleven years of therapy. Interesting and suspenseful as the discoveries are made and inspirational as God puts the pieces back together to make one whole person.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Christianity Today Book Award in Christianity and Culture How should we remember atrocities? Should we ever forgive abusers? Can we not hope for final reconciliation, even if it means redeemed victims and perpetrators spending eternity together? We live in an age that insists that past wrongs—genocides, terrorist attacks, bald personal injustices—should never be forgotten. But Miroslav Volf here proposes the radical idea that letting go of such memories—after a certain point and under certain conditions—may actually be a gift of grace we should embrace. Volf’s personal stories of persecution and interrogation frame his search for theological resources to make memories a wellspring of healing rather than a source of deepening pain and animosity. Controversial, thoughtful, and incisively reasoned, The End of Memory begins a conversation that we avoid to our great detriment. This second edition includes an appendix on the memories of perpetrators as well as victims, a response to critics, and a James K. A. Smith interview with Volf about the nature and function of memory in the Christian life.

Book excerpt: A little dog revived with rain, a desperate woman comforted by warm arms, an intimate look at Mary Magdalenes thoughts the morning Christ arose, a womans unselfish desire, are a few of the stories in this volume about living the Christian life. They illustrate some extraordinary paradigm breaks and parallels in living as Christ would have His Bride live. Sometimes everyday living creates a fog over our spiritual enlightenment, dulling our understanding and even our relationship with God. Other times we get entangled in worries and cares of the world. Christs light will guide us to clear thinking, and He will burn off that fog just like sunshine. This is a collection of stories and studies of how to make Christ ruler of your heart, allowing the Son to dissipate the fog of trials and troubles that invade our lives on a daily basis.

Book excerpt: In Ten Lectures on Cognitive Linguistics and the Unification of Spoken and Signed Languages Sherman Wilcox suggests that rather than abstracting away from the material substance of language, linguists can discover the deep connections between signed and spoken languages by taking an embodied view. This embodied solution reveals the patterns and principles that unite languages across modalities. Using a multidisciplinary approach, Wilcox explores such issues as the how to apply cognitive grammar to the study of signed languages, the pervasive conceptual iconicity present throughout the lexicon and grammar of signed languages, the relation of language and gesture, the grammaticization of signs, the significance of motion for understanding language as a dynamic system, and the integration of cognitive neuroscience and cognitive linguistics.

Book excerpt: Over and over, the chosen people of God saw in his hand and arm a promise of provision and protection. God told them: "I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God." (Exodus 6:6-7). These words of belonging are sweet solace for the Christian who learns to take God at his word and trust him even in the most troubled times. As a woman who herself has weathered countless storms both in her private and public life, Gail MacDonald draws from her own experience as well as the classic wisdom of other great Christians to speak to the hearts of those who sometimes feel overwhelmed by life. As Christians, "we need to know that we are God's very own children, and his loving care for us will be eternal."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of its kind to include the personal accounts of people who have survived injury to the brain, along with professional therapists' reports of their progress through rehabilitation. The paintings and stories of survivors combine with experts' discussions of the theory and practice of brain injury rehabilitation to illustrate the ups and downs that survivors encounter in their journey from pre-injury status to insult and post-injury rehabilitation. Wilson, Winegardner and Ashworth's focus on the survivors' perspective shows how rehabilitation is an interactive process between people with brain injury, health care staff, and others, and gives the survivors the chance to tell their own stories of life before their injury, the nature of the insult, their early treatment, and subsequent rehabilitation. Presenting practical approaches to help survivors of brain injury achieve functionally relevant and meaningful goals, Life After Brain Injury: Survivors’ Stories will help all those working in rehabilitation understand the principles involved in holistic brain injury rehabilitation and how these principles, combined with theory and models, translate into clinical practice. This book will be of great interest to anyone who wishes to extend their knowledge of the latest theories and practices involved in making life more manageable for people who have suffered damage to the brain. Life After Brain Injury: Survivors’ Stories will also be essential for clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, and anybody dealing with acquired brain injury whether they be a survivor of a brain injury themselves, a relative, a friend or a carer.
