Book excerpt: Excerpt from Putnam's Monthly, Vol. 1: A Magazine of Literature, Science, and Art; January-June, 1853 If a true statement has been the situation of Cuban affairs, Cuba has a right to attempt her freedom. Taking what has been said for truth, a case is made out which would justify Cuba by the unanimous voice of mankind for the act of revolution. For it is a safe proposition to submit to the civilized world, that no nation shall Oppress by any arbitriļ¬‚'y oi' tyrannical despotism a dependent country or colony. Although the means of re dress may not always be at hand, no one dis utes the right of the Oppressed to see for or to use them. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ...a rush. Observing the men at the wheels of the different machines in any big event, one is struck by the predomin less of consequences, have left their marks on those lean, strong, weatherbeaten faces waiting at the line forthe starter's signal. Not reckless, but absolutely fearless, every man is ready to offer up his life to the spirit of speed. A driver who was seriously injured while practising for the Briarcliff race said as soon as he recovered consciousness: "This makes nineteen times in nine years that I have had broken bones, but I 'm going to keep right on racing." George Robertson's narrow escapes from death on the track would fill a volume. Speed contests and endurance runs certainly weed out the weaklings; no man who is a coward can hope to drive a racing-car to victory, and several drivers now in the public eye have proved themselves to he possessed of courage, endurance and heroism equal to any ever displayed on the battle-fields of history. I. B. Ryall won the hill-climb up Giant's Despair at Wilkesbarre, in May, 1907, driving with a sprained wrist and taking twelve seconds off the world's record for such a feat. Later on, in the twenty--four-hour endurance race at Brighton Beach, the same man drove with a broken leg in a plaster cast strapped to the car. He clung to the wheel all night in this condition, and for one hundred miles of the distance he travelled between dark and daylight, averaging one minute and two seconds to the mile. After driving sixteen out of eighteen hours, he called upon Charles Rifen him off out of pure humanity. Any one who saw his face in the ghastly glare of the arc-lights, drawn and distorted with agony and streaming with sweat, will not soon forget it. Another striking instance...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Putnam's Monthly Historical Magazine, Vol. 5: Devoted to Genealogy, History, Heraldry, Revolutionary and Colonial Records; Jan.-Dec., 1897 Mrs. Jane Gr. Austin has written a very charming book, Betty Alden, but in regard to Betty Alden's character, she drew entirely from her imagination, and Betty's de scendants resent the title and description. They say she was dignified, a woman of greatl'character, and fine pres ence, very tall and handsome. In height she resembled her father, John, the tallest in the Colony - also her brother, Capt. John Alden, known asthe 'tall man of Bostonf.' In the list of the first baptisms in the'little Compton church, 1704, her name does not appear; but some names must be lost, for sixty-nine were baptized, and only sixty-three are n; Her husband was one of the organizers of the church. We must not lose sight of the sterling qualities of vvill 1am Pabodie. He was a man much employed in public affairs and of much respectability. J. O. Austin's Genea logical Dictionary of Settlers in Rhode Island gives very much about him, gleaned from the public records. He was town clerk of Duxbury, after Alexander Standish. When 'he took the office the town records were burnt, and he en -tered his own marriage, and births and marriages of his children, very carefully. Would he had done as much for the other families in Duxbury. He lived in D - uxbury, close to the Brewsters and Standishes, east of Eagle-nest Creek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Putnam's Monthly Magazine of American Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 4: July to December 1854 It was certainly impossible, with any just regard to the necessary differences of thought in a country like ours, to avoid all censure iu the conduct of the Magazine, because it was not possible, with an equal regard for the liberty of the author, and the good sense of the reader, to trim every article to a certain level. Yet, both in the choice of topics, and in their treatment, the Publishers are confident that no thoughtful man has found anything unjustly partisan, since both sides of all the important social, moral, and political questions which have been discussed in these pages have had an equal chance, and an impar tial consideration.
