Book excerpt: ['Trans'-Fe(H2)(CO)(dppe)2]2+ (pKa -5) was generated by protonation while [' trans'-Fe(H2)(CO)(depe)2]2+ (pK a -2) was generated using molecular H2. These complexes were characterized in solution but were not isolated. ['Trans'-Fe(BF 4)(CO)(depe)2][BF4] and ['Trans'-Fe(OTf)(CO)(depe) 2][OTf] were isolated and characterized. ['Trans'-FeF(CO)(depe) 2]+ was generated from ['trans'-Fe(BF 4)(CO)(depe)2]+ and characterized in solution but was not isolated. The compounds [K('Q')][IrH4(PR3) 2] ('Q' = 18-crown-6, R = Ph, iPr, Cy; ' Q' = aza-18-crown-6, R = iPr; 'Q' = diaza-18-crown-6, R = Ph, iPr, Cy) were formed in the reactions of IrH5(PR3)2 with KH and 'Q'. The PCy3 compounds were not isolated. In solution [IrH4(PR 3)2]- (R = Ph, Cy) are 'cis' but [IrH4(P'i'Pr3)2] - is a mixture of 'cis' and 'trans' isomers. There is evidence of solution proton-hydride bonding of the aza salts. In the solid state the anion in [K(18-crown-6)][IrH4(Pi Pr3)2] is 'cis' but it is ' trans' in [K(diaza-18-crown-6)][IrH4(PiPr3)2]. [K(diaza-18-crown-6)][IrH4(PR3)2] (R =Ph, iPr) form solid-state chains linked by proton-hydride bonds.

Book excerpt: Pincer-Metal Complexes: Applications in Catalytic Dehydrogenation Chemistry provides an overview of pincer-metal catalytic systems that transform hydrocarbons and their derivatives from an synthetic and mechanistic point-of-view. This book provides thorough coverage of the operating mechanisms and dehydrogenation catalyst compatibility in both functionalized and unfunctionalized hydrocarbon systems. In addition, it includes success stories of pincer-metal systems, as well as current and future challenges. The book is an ideal reference for researchers practicing synthetic organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and catalysis in academia and industry. In recent years there has been a surge in the research on hydrocarbon dehydrogenation catalytic systems that are compatible with polar substituents. This helps facilitate formulation of tandem processes that are not limited to hydrocarbon transformation but also to hydrocarbon functionalization in a single pot. Covers applications of pincer-metal complexes in organic transformations Includes pincer-group 8 and 9 metal complexes for alkane dehydrogenations Features a discussion of pincer-metal complexes for the dehydrogenation of functionalized hydrocarbons and electro-catalytic transformations

Book excerpt: Transition metal hydrides are key intermediates implicated in a wide range of chemical and electrochemical transformations. Herein, select examples of molecular transition metal hydride complexes and their applications in critical hydrogen transfer reactions, specifically transfer hydrogenation, electrocatalytic alcohol oxidation, and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, are presented. An octahedral Ru-hydride complex reacts rapidly and irreversibly with CO2 under ambient conditions to yield the Ru-formate. The analogous insertion of various ketones yields an equilibrium mixture of the hydride and alkoxide complexes, for which the equilibrium constants are measured by 1H NMR. Density functional theory is used to compare the mechanism of acetone and CO2 insertion. Investigations on the kinetic profile of transfer hydrogenation with the Ru-hydride complex reveal some key aspects of the mechanism. The Ru-hydride undergoes an irreversible oxidation at low potential by cyclic voltammetry. In the presence of alcohol and alkoxide base, large current enhancement is observed at this potential, consistent with electrocatalytic alcohol oxidation. The synthesis and characterization of a family of dicationic Co(III) complexes with bidentate nitrogen ligands are presented. Upon addition of protonated N, N-dimethylformamide buffer, electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is observed at onset potentials near -1.1 V. Further studies demonstrate that these complexes decompose under acidic reducing conditions to form an active species at the electrode surface. A Co(III)-azopyridine complex exhibits a reversible 2e- reduction at very mild potentials. Chemical reduction with cobaltocene yields a neutral complex as an air stable, diamagnetic solid. Spectroscopic and crystallographic studies illuminate key structural and electronic changes that occur upon reduction, indicating that the neutral complex is best described as a highly delocalized system. Protonation of the neutral species yields a monocationic hydrazino complex. All three cleavage modes (i.e. proton, hydride, and hydrogen atom) for this ligand N-H bond are demonstrated. Studies on the stoichiometric reactivity of this complex with the triphenylcarbenium cation and TEMPO radical are explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the point of view of hydrogen, desorption metal hydrides are extremely complex and interesting. Various metal hydrides differ so much, range in terms of decomposition temperatures and pressures and look like materials from separate classes. Many research articles are devoted to metal hydrides; many of them study the kinetics of dehydriding. However, there is still no complete understanding of the processes that govern kinetics. The reason is for the high number of factors that influence the rate of hydride decomposition and hydrogen desorption. First of all, properties of metal hydrides are diverse. The number of hydride phases, decomposition rates and ranges of absorbed energy are very different. The rates of hydrogen desorption, diffusion and phase transition also can influence the kinetics of dehydriding. The aim of this book is to summarise the authors research of dehydriding kinetics with electronic structures of the materials taken into account, and to determine which elementary processes influence the decomposition rates. The book is not a reference guide on the dehydriding rates of constants. Even more so, in order to keep the subject as simple as possible, the authors restrict the discussion only to binary hydrides when talking about basic dehydriding laws. It is possible, however, that ternary and more complex hydrides have their own unique properties. The authors describe experimental results through physically clear and well studied processes, such as desorption, diffusion, reaction of hydride decomposition, etc. as well as by using conservation laws. On the other hand, describing the entire process in the most general way, taking into account all of the possible reactions and excluding some on the grounds of experimental results, also seems unsound. The authors believe that complexity of models must be comparable to that of experimental data; additional factors should be taken into account only in order to improve poor fitting. The following factors seem the most important: Electronic properties of the hydride (type of bonding); phase morphology; incubation and nucleation; physically reasonable elementary processes mentioned above (diffusion, adsorption and desorption, decomposition and formation of the hydride phase, etc.); and the variety of powder particles. Over recent years, much effort has been made to activate the decomposition of magnesium and aluminium hydrides with the hope of finding appropriate materials for keeping hydrogen in solids aboard a vehicle. Most of the research dealt with mechanochemical activation (ie: ball milling in the presence of catalysts, often in hydrogen). The choice of catalytic materials is not always logical; this was one more reason for systemising the dehydriding kinetics. Naturally, activated materials must follow the general pattern of decomposing metal hydrides. A separate section is devoted to the activation of magnesium and aluminium hydrides; aside from mechanochemical, we also discuss the thermal and photoactivation of these materials.
