Preschool children begin their educational journey distanced from a newborn screening and may have changes in their hearing. The purpose of this project was threefold: to determine in a preschool population if remote teleaudiology can discover undiagnosed hearing loss, can discover undiagnosed hearing loss after a routine newborn screening, or can correlate parent-suspected hearing loss to hearing-screening-confirmed hearing loss. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, 91 4- to 6-year-old preschool children from the Texas Rio Grande Valley with near equal age grouping distribution were enrolled in this project (N = 91). After visual otoscopy, a pure tone audiometry hearing screening was performed using Shoebox Audiometry (4.10 version) instrumentation with results of pass or fail. Failure was defined as inability to hear any tone at any screened hertz (Hz) at 20 through 40 decibels (dB). Results were hearing screening fail rate of 50% either bilaterally or unilaterally with intervention referrals. Further grouping of the 75 children reported to have passed their newborn hearing screening fail rate was 53%. Twelve parents suspected hearing loss in their preschool child. Correlation of suspected to confirmed hearing loss was significant (p = .03). Results propose that a one-time newborn screening alone is inadequate to determine hearing status for children in their formative years. Subsequent hearing screening should become routine at critical ages and stages or with parental concerns.
