Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey goes back in time to Burton, Michigan’s history, when it was still the “Atherton Settlement” (1835-1855). Genesee County was formed in 1836, Michigan wasn’t even a state, until 1837. This was an exciting time for new families to settle here, finding land of their own, for the first time, freedom of religion and new adventures. I’ll be going through the yearly traditions behind the holidays and inventions along the way. I hope you enjoy my historical journey. Learning about the settlers on Thread River was a lot of fun, how they made the Atherton Trail; the four Atherton families working together to survive the cold winters. They built strong shelters, saved food and wood for the winter, with the help of the natives. In 1835 the Atherton Settlement was established; the Atherton families built a strong community over the next twelve months with thirty families. They built their homes, barns, wagons, three churches, a mill, and a trading post. The first school in the settlement was founded in 1836, the Atherton School, was a one room schoolhouse built on the corner of Atherton Trail and Center Road where the Burton Memorial Library sits now. Betsey Atherton was the first teacher. Throughout my research, we have a lot to be thankful for; especially the four Atherton men that were brave enough to stay and never give up on the settlement. As more people joined the settlement for the next 20 years, some had military backgrounds, and mostly coming from New York. With all manner of trades to prosper as the community, when more schools were needed, the farmers would build one in each area for the children. 1855 Atherton Settlement combined with other farms to become Burton Township; the second largest township, but without a post office so, “HIDDEN.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes and highlights the development and success of major league baseball teams in the National League and the American League, focusing on each team’s performance in seasons and postseasons and to what extent each succeeded as a business enterprise despite competition for market share from other types of entertainment. The book discusses historical and financial information about the 30 major league franchises. Each chapter contains two core themes—Team Performances and Franchise Business. The former highlights which and how teams won division and league championships and World Series while the latter lists and compares financial data including their revenue, gate receipts, and operating income and describes interesting business topics. Each chapter also provides an overview of when each franchise organized and why it joined MLB, a brief profile of its current majority owner or ownership group, records of teams’ special coaches and players, attendances at home games, and how their ballparks rank as a venue for fans. Baseball Business explains why particular teams located in large, midsized, or small markets win more games and titles than others and when and how frequently that occurs. Furthermore, it provides ways to compare franchises’ financial success individually, by division, and by league. By linking and comparing the historical performances of MLB teams to financial information about them as business organizations, this book offers a unique contribution to the literature on the sports industry.

Book excerpt: A novel full of heart, in which love, friendship, and charity teach a young woman to live a bigger life. When Madeline Stone walks away from Chicago and moves five hundred miles north to the coast of Lake Superior, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, she isn't prepared for how much her life will change. Charged with caring for an aging family friend, Madeline finds herself in the middle of beautiful nowhere with Gladys and Arbutus, two octogenarian sisters-one sharp and stubborn, the other sweeter than sunshine. As Madeline begins to experience the ways of the small, tight-knit town, she is drawn into the lives and dramas of its residents. It's a place where times are tough and debts run deep, but friendship, community, and compassion run deeper. As the story hurtles along-featuring a lost child, a dashed love, a car accident, a wedding, a fire, and a romantic reunion-Gladys, Arbutus, and the rest of the town teach Madeline more about life, love, and goodwill than she's learned in a lifetime. A heartwarming novel, South of Superior explores the deep reward in caring for others, and shows how one who is poor in pocket can be rich in so many other ways, and how little it often takes to make someone happy.

Book excerpt: An inspiring and heartfelt memoir about the friendship between eight women forged over two decades.“br> The eight Drummond Girls first met in 1991 at Peegeo's Food & Spirits in northern Michigan where, at the time, they were all waitresses, bartenders, or regular customers. When one of them got engaged, they celebrated with a trip to Drummond Island--their first trip together to the remote 36-mile chunk of rock, dive bars, dirt roads, and beautiful forests--and it's where they became bonded forever. They've made this voyage every year since then as a way to retain a piece of their wild youth, despite the taming influence of marriage, motherhood, and management. This year, their focus is Beverly, oldest of the Drummond Girls at 65, whose memory is beginning to lapse. Undaunted, the other women intend to help Beverly remember all they've shared--every campfire, every late night talk, every secret confided.

Book excerpt: With unabashed winter charm, The Wishing Bridge sparkles with the humor and heart fans of Kristy Woodson Harvey, Nancy Thayer and Jenny Colgan love most. Once the hottest mergers and acquisitions executive in the company, Henrietta Wegner can see the ambitious and impossibly young up-and-comers gunning for her job. When Henri’s boss makes it clear she’ll be starting the New Year unemployed unless she can close a big deal before the holidays, Henri impulsively tells him that she can convince her aging parents to sell Wegner’s—their iconic Frankenmuth, Michigan, Christmas store—to a massive, soulless corporation. It’s the kind of deal cool, corporate Henri has built her career on. Home for the holidays has typically meant a perfunctory twenty-four-hour visit for Henri, then back to Detroit as fast as her car will drive her. So turning up at the Wegner’s offices in early December raises some eyebrows: from her delighted, if puzzled, parents to her suspicious brother and curious childhood friends. But as Henri fields impatient texts from her boss while reconnecting with the magic of the store and warmth of her hometown, what sounded great in the boardroom begins to lose its luster in real life. She’s running out of time to pull the trigger on what could be the greatest success of her career…or the most awkward family holiday of her life. Includes the bonus novella Christmas Angels
