Book Synopsis Truth Springs from the Earth by : Morris M. Faierstein
Download or read book Truth Springs from the Earth written by Morris M. Faierstein and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabbi Menahem Mendel of Kotsk (1787-1859) was one of the most interesting and challenging figures of Hasidism in the nineteenth century. His search for truth and battles against falsehood and spiritual compromise are the subject of many legends, hagiographical stories, and anecdotes. Though he was irascible and demanding, he inspired the loyalty of disciples who went on to become the dominant leaders of Hasidism in Poland from the middle of the nineteenth century to the destruction of Polish Jewry in the Holocaust. R. Menahem Mendel left no surviving writings. His descendants and disciples moved away from the radicalism of his teachings and adopted more conventional and conservative theological positions. As a result, there was little incentive to preserve and publish his teachings. The goal of this work is twofold. First, to present a biographical study of what is known about R. Menahem Mendel that is based on historical research, instead of repeating myths, legends, and stories without regard to their historical veracity. Secondly, to collect, translate, and analyze those teachings and sayings by or about R. Menahem Mendel that are consistent with what we know about his life and teachings, and are also accessible to a broader audience.

Book Synopsis Bummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc. by : Ron Ross
Download or read book Bummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc. written by Ron Ross and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tough kid with a heart of gold, Al "Bummy" Davis grew up in the streets of Brownsville, New York on the fringes of the Jewish mob during the 20's and 30's-thanks to his older brother, a feared racketeer. But as much as he resisted the underworld of Murder, Inc. by becoming a championship fighter and a Brownsville hero, he never did escape the Jewish Mob's shadow. Though he repeatedly stood up to mob kingpins, Bummy suffered a spectacular fall from grace as a result of a smear campaign by the press. Ron Ross' Bummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc. is not just about one Jewish boxer, his meteoric rise to fame, and victimization by the press. Bummy's life was intertwined with the Great Depression, the survival of the Brooklyn Jewish immigrant population during Prohibition, and the inevitable offshoot of Prohibition-Murder Inc., one of American history's most notorious band of killers. Ron Ross portrays an important historical time period, an enigmatic Jewish subculture, and the surprising juxtaposition of a generation of Jews and their talent for boxing. Bummy Davis vs. Murder, Inc. features a cast of colorful villains whom you'll love to hate, a boxing legend who was the unwitting pawn of fate, and the human drama of the boxing world. With his vivid, street-smart Damon Runyonesque writing style, Ron Ross redeems a tragic hero who fought the pull of one of the most brutal groups of killers to grace the twentieth century.

Download or read book The Devil's Pupil written by Bates Cody and published by Word Alive Press. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only God can bring a dead man back to life. On the outside, Cody Bates appeared as any other normal kid on the playground. But abuse, prescription drugs, and bullying had produced anything but a normal human being. Before long, his preteen drug addiction and young offender incarcerations transitioned into narcotic trafficking, gangs, murder, and life in a maximum-security prison. Organized crime, counter-surveillance, and violent stiff-arm tactics became Cody’s way of life as he fought desperately for the things of this world—money, power, women, and drugs. To counter the crippling emptiness that consumed him day after day, he resorted to the only solution he had: cocaine. As his health deteriorated and his addiction worsened, he fell deeper into psychosis where he encountered the demonic faces, whispers, and sirens no one but him could see and hear. The future appeared bleak as he fell deeper into the devil’s hands. It seemed obvious to everyone that there was only one way this could all end. But there are things far worse than death for a man intent on destroying everything and everyone in his path.
