However, this type of structures can be subject to punching-shear failure in the slab-column connections. Without shear reinforcement, the slab-column connection can undergo brittle punching failure, especially when the structure is subject to lateral loading in seismic zones. The shear bolts are a new type of transverse reinforcement developed for retrofit of existing structures against punching. This research focuses on how the shear bolts can improve the punching-shear capacity and ductility of the existing slab-column connections under vertical service and lateral seismic loads.

Book excerpt: Over the life span of a structure it may become necessary to retrofit, or strengthen certain components or elements. This may be due to construction errors, changes in use and occupancy, or changes due to material deterioration or damage. Slab-column connections in flat slab structures might need to be strengthened for punching shear. Using steel shear bolts to strengthen connections for punching shear is a new technique used for retrofit that was developed at the University of Waterloo. If the retrofitted part of the structure is exposed to the atmosphere, or to chemicals such as deicing salts, the steel can corrode, thus furthering to damage the structure. Non-corrosive materials that can replace the steel shear bolts can be a good practical alternative to steel. Reported in this thesis are the results of research on the development and use of non-corrosive shear bolts for reinforced concrete interior slab-column connections. Externally applied shear reinforcing bolts provide the punching shear reinforcement strength, while allowing the flexibility and ease of installation of an external application after construction. By providing a bearing area against both sides of the slab surface, the formation of punching shear cracks can be restrained, and the connection can become strengthened against punching shear failure. Three different types of non-corrosive shear bolts were developed and tested. The first was an off-the-shelf glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bolt / nut product. The two others used two different GFRP core rods with aluminum fittings crimped to their ends. A total of six specimens were tested, four were tested under an increasing static load, while two were tested with an unbalanced pseudo-dynamic lateral load. All six specimens were designed to fail in punching shear before reaching their flexural capacity. The results are compared against previous test results of specimens both unreinforced and reinforced with steel shear bolts to determine their effectiveness. From the test results it was found that the GFRP shear bolts did strengthen the connections for punching shear. The GFRP nut and bolt did not strengthen the connection, and, in fact, decreased its overall strength when compared to the unreinforced specimen. The presence of the GFRP shear bolts also increased the connection ductility and the deflection capability. In the pseudo-dynamic tests the GFRP shear bolts significantly increased the amount of energy dissipated by the connection under reverse cyclic loading. The results of the testing appeared to be depended on the proper application of the crimping technique to place the bolts in the slab.

Book excerpt: fib Bulletin 81 reports the latest information available to researchers and practitioners on the analysis, design and experimental evidence of punching shear of structural concrete slabs. It follows previous efforts by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) and its predecessor the Euro-International Committee for Concrete (CEB), through CEB Bulletin 168, Punching Shear in Reinforced Concrete (1985) and fibBulletin 12, Punching of structural concrete slabs (2001), and an international symposium sponsored by the punching shear subcommittee of ACI Committee 445 (Shear and Torsion) and held in Kansas City, Mo., USA, in 2005. This bulletin contains 18 papers that were presented in three sessions as part of an international symposium held in Philadelphia, Pa., USA, on October 25, 2016. The symposium was co-organized by the punching shear sub-committee of ACI 445 and by fib Working Party 2.2.3 (Punching and Shear in Slabs) with the objectives of not only disseminating information on this important design subject but also promoting harmonization among the various design theories and treatment of key aspects of punching shear design. The papers are organized in the same order they were presented in the symposium. The symposium honored Professor Emeritus Neil M. Hawkins (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA), whose contributions through the years in the field of punching shear of structural concrete slabs have been paramount. The papers cover key aspects related to punching shear of structural concrete slabs under different loading conditions, the study of size effect on punching capacity of slabs, the effect of slab reinforcement ratio on the response and failure mode of slabs, without and with shear reinforcement, and its implications for the design and formulation in codes of practice, an examination of different analytical tools to predict the punching shear response of slabs, the study of the post-punching response of concrete slabs, the evaluation of design provisions in modern codes based on recent experimental evidence and new punching shear theories, and an overview of the combined efforts undertaken jointly by ACI 445 and fib WP 2.2.3 to generate test result databanks for the evaluation and calibration of punching shear design recommendations in North American and international codes of practice.

Book excerpt: fib Bulletin 35 is the first bulletin to publish documentation from an fib short course. These courses are held worldwide and cover advanced knowledge of structural concrete in general, or specific topics. They are organized by fib and given by internationally recognized experts in fib, often supplemented with local experts active in fib. They are based on the knowledge and expertise from fib's ten Commissions and nearly fifty Task Groups. fib Bulletin 35 presents the course materials developed for the short course "Retrofitting of Concrete Structures through Externally Bonded FRP, with emphasis on Seismic Applications", given in Ankara and Istanbul in June 2005. The course drew on expertise both from outside Turkey and from the large pool of local experts on this subject. In most countries of the world, the building stock is ageing and needs continuous maintenance or repair. Moreover, the majority of existing constructions are deficient in the light of current knowledge and design codes. The problem of structural deficiency of existing constructions is especially acute in seismic regions, as, even there, seismic design of structures is relatively recent. The direct and indirect costs of demolition and reconstruction of structurally deficient constructions are often prohibitive; furthermore they entail a substantial waste of natural resources and energy. Therefore, structural retrofitting is becoming increasingly widespread throughout the world. Externally bonded Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) are rapidly becoming the technique of choice for structural retrofitting. They are cleaner and easier to apply than conventional retrofitting techniques, reduce disruption to the occupancy and operation of the facility, do not generate debris or waste, and reduce health and accident hazards at the construction site as well as noise and air pollution in the surroundings. fib Bulletin 35 gives state-of-the-art coverage of retrofitting through FRPs and presents relevant provisions from three recent standardisation milestones: EN 1998-3:2005 "Eurocode 8: Design of structures for earthquake resistance - Part 3: Assessment and retrofitting of buildings", the 2005 Draft of the Turkish seismic design code, and the Italian regulatory document CNR-DT 200/04, "Instructions for Design, Execution and Control of Strengthening Interventions by Means of Fibre-Reinforced Composites" (2004).

Book excerpt: Punching shear failure is a big issue in flat slab-column connections where the failure is a sudden and brittle. This research presents a proposed method for strengthening flat slab-column connections using ferrocement laminates. Both experimental and numerical investigations were carried out to study the effectiveness of this method in strengthening. An experimental program, ten square slabs with a concentric column was tested. Two specimens were kept as control specimens, and eight of them were strengthened with ferrocement laminates. The studied parameters were thickness of ferrocement laminates, type of wire mesh, volume fraction of reinforcement and strengthening type. The finite element software program (ANSYS 9) was used in the numerical analysis to model the strengthened slab-column connections.

Book excerpt: Structures such as industrial facilities, military protective structures, and infrastructures. This study presents experimental investigation for strengthening RC slabs under impact loads using shear reinforcement. Slabs were strengthened against punching shear with two methods: using shear studs as shear reinforcement and using steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) instead of plain concrete. Eight RC slabs with dimensions of 2150x2150x150 mm were tested. Four of the specimens, two identical pairs, were cast with shear studs around the point of impact. Remaining four specimens, again two identical pairs, were cast with 1% steel fibers. Pairs in each group contained two different levels of longitudinal reinforcement. For each pair, one specimen was tested under static loading, whereas its identical twin was tested under impact loads. Specimens were tested with a test setup that provides simply supported conditions. Support loads, displacements, accelerations, and strains on bars were measured during the tests. The study revealed that using shear studs and SFRC prevents brittle punching shear failure for both static and impact loading. Specimens with steel fibers reached the highest load carrying capacity for static test while specimens with shear reinforcement carried a smaller load for large deformations. Specimens with SFRC displayed a close to static behavior under impact loading, influenced only slightly by inertial forces due to impact. Specimens with shear studs were largely influenced by inertial forces and scabbing occurred at some areas. Specimens with steel fibers endured more impacts compared to control specimens and specimens with shear studs due to their higher energy dissipating capabilities.

Book excerpt: To assess the two-way shear resistance, or punching shear strength, of reinforced concrete slabs, code provisions fitted from experimental data are typically employed. The experimental data forming the bases of these provisions have generally consisted of isolated slab-column connection tests that seek to represent the negative moment region of a flat plate slab. This research is focused on exploring the variation in the punching performance of slab-column connections when the typical testing conditions used to investigate isolated slab specimen are varied in a manner that produces alternative sectional loading conditions within the column connection region. To accomplish this, an innovative testing apparatus is introduced that permits alternative combinations of slab bending moment to out-of-plane shear force ratios to be applied to the slab-column connection. Results are presented from an experimental program conducted at the Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory (FSEL) of The University of Texas at Austin and an analysis is presented comparing the results from the tests with estimations made from current standards, the Critical Crack Shear Theory (CSCT), and also from numerical models. The data obtained from the experimental program are used to scrutinize current design and analysis procedures, and to shed light on the significance of the sectional loading conditions in the light of flat plate connection shear resisting performance.

Book excerpt: Anchorage by fasteners and composite structures of steel and concrete have seen dramatic progress in research, technology and application over the past decades. The understanding of the fundamental principles underlying both disciplines has significantly improved. Concurrently, there has been rapid growth in the development of sophisticated new products and the establishment of international directives and codes to ensure their safe and economical use in a wide range of engineered structures. Although they deal with very similar problems, the two disciplines have developed independently from each other. To optimize the use of composite structures and fastenings to concrete, however, it is necessary to have knowledge of both: the local behavior of the fastening system and the global behavior of the structure. It became apparent that a forum offering the opportunity to expand and to exchange experience in the field of connecting steel and concrete would benefit all involved. Furthermore this forum would aid in the rapid dissemination of new ideas, technologies and solutions as well as explore new areas of research. This book forms the Proceedings of the 2 Symposium on “Connections between Steel and Concrete”. As the 1 Symposium in 2001 it brought together leading experts from all facets of the research, design, construction and anchor manufacturing community from around the world. Their lectures covered the topics:- test methods- behavior and design- dynamic loading: shock, earthquake, fatigue- durability- exceptional applications, strenghtening and structures- related topicsIn total 129 papers are gathered in these 2 volumes.
