When he returns, he finds his village destroyed by a warring tribe and his family slain. His mother dies in his arms and her last words are: "Go find your father." Puma finds his father in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His father welcomes him with open arms and trains him in the white man's ways. Puma accompanies his family to visit his grandparents in Virginia and Georgia. He attends West Point and becomes a cavalry officer and placed in command of a troop charged with protecting a wagon train traveling from Independence to Santa Fe. In Santa Fe, he is directed to prevent white outlaw bands from taking the land that belongs to the early settlers and must also fight off renegade Apaches. A war is developing between the North and South, and he is concerned that it will destroy his father's families. A war is also brewing in the west and he does not want to be fighting against his own people. He is deeply torn about where his loyalties lie.

Book excerpt: A Stone Age people lived in caves beside a river that flows into a mysterious "Valley of Mist," They worshipped fire. Priests ruled, and they sacrificed anyone who defied them to the Fire God. When girls reach womanhood, they are required to go to the temple and submit to the priests nightly until they conceive. The priests tell them that they are being impregnated by God and, if they fail to conceive, they will be thrown into the pit of Fire. Lela and Ador have just reached womanhood. Lela loves Zen and Ador loves Jok. They do not want to submit to the priests. Zen and Jok do not want to share the women they love. They all have been charged with defying the priests and they fear for their lives. They try to escape by floating on a raft into the dreaded Valley of Mist. Soldiers pursue them until they float into the valley. No one has ever entered that valley and returned to tell what lies in its fog-shrouded depths. As the raft floats into the valley, fog closes around them. They have entered a primeval jungle. They see giant reptiles, lions, and saber-toothed tigers. Foul-smelling steam rises from stagnant pools. Shudders of fear run through them. The river has carried them into this terrible place. Perhaps, if they can survive long enough, it will carry them out, but what horrors lie beyond?

Frey have assembled a team of leading southwestern biologists to explore the animals and the major issues that shape their continued presence in the state and region. The book includes discussions on habitat, evolving or altered ecosystems, and new discoveries about animal behavior and range, and it also provides details on the distribution, habitat associations, life history, population status, management, and conservation needs of individual carnivore species in New Mexico. Like Cartron's award-winning Raptors of New Mexico, Wild Carnivores of New Mexico shares the same emphasis on scientific rigor and thoroughness, high readability, and visual appeal. Each chapter is illustrated with numerous color photographs to help readers visualize unique morphological or life-history traits, habitat, research techniques, and management and conservation issues.

Book excerpt: The relationship between humans and mountain lions has always been uneasy. A century ago, mountain lions were vilified as a threat to livestock and hunted to the verge of extinction. In recent years, this keystone predator has made a remarkable comeback, but today humans and mountain lions appear destined for a collision course. Its recovery has led to an unexpected conundrum: Do more mountain lions mean they’re a threat to humans and domestic animals? Or, are mountain lions still in need of our help and protection as their habitat dwindles and they’re forced into the edges and crevices of communities to survive? Mountain lion biologist and expert Mark Elbroch welcomes these tough questions. He dismisses long-held myths about mountain lions and uses groundbreaking science to uncover important new information about their social habits. Elbroch argues that humans and mountain lions can peacefully coexist in close proximity if we ignore uninformed hype and instead arm ourselves with knowledge and common sense. He walks us through the realities of human safety in the presence of mountain lions, livestock safety, competition with hunters for deer and elk, and threats to rare species, dispelling the paranoia with facts and logic. In the last few chapters, he touches on human impacts on mountain lions and the need for a sensible management strategy. The result, he argues, is a win-win for humans, mountain lions, and the ecosystems that depend on keystone predators to keep them in healthy balance. The Cougar Conundrum delivers a clear-eyed assessment of a modern wildlife challenge, offering practical advice for wildlife managers, conservationists, hunters, and those in the wildland-urban interface who share their habitat with large predators.
