Book excerpt: A mathematical model for pulse propagation in a nonlinear fiber-optic communications line is presented where linear loss in the fiber is balanced by a chain of periodically-spaced, phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs). A multiple scale analysis is employed to average over the strong, rapidly-varying and periodic perturbations to the governing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). The analysis indicates that the averaged evolution is governed by a fourth-order nonlinear diffusion equation which evolves on a length scale much greater than that of the typical soliton period. In a particular limit, stable steady-state hyperbolic secant solutions of the averaged equation are analytically found to exist provided a minimum amount of over-amplification is supplied. Further, arbitrary initial conditions within a wide stability region exponentially decay onto the steady-state. Outside of this analytic regime, extensive numerical simulations indicate that soliton-like steady-states exist and act as exponential attractors for a wide region of parameter space. These simulations also show that the averaged evolution is quite accurate in modeling the full NLS with loss and phase-sensitive gain. The bifurcation structure of the fourth-order equation is explored. A subcritical bifurcation from the trivial solution is found to occur for a specific over-amplification value. Further, a limit point, or fold, is also found which connects the stable branch of solutions with the unstable branch from the subcritical bifurcation. The bifurcation structure can be further explored in parameter space with the use of AUTO which is capable of tracking steady-state solutions for a wide range of parameters.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications COMPUTATIONAL WAVE PROPAGATION is based on the workshop with the same title and was an integral part of the 1994-1995 IMA program on "Waves and Scattering." We would like to thank Bjorn Engquist and Gregory A. Kriegsmann for their hard work in organizing this meeting and in editing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation, the Army Research Office, and the Office of Naval Research, whose financial support made this workshop possible. A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE Although the field of wave propagation and scattering has its classical roots in the last century, it has enjoyed a rich and vibrant life over the past 50 odd years. Scientists, engineers, and mathematicians have devel oped sophisticated asymptotic and numerical tools to solve problems of ever increasing complexity. Their work has been spurred on by emerging and maturing technologies, primarily concerned with the propagation and reception of information, and the efficient transmission of energy. The vitality of this scientific field is not waning. Increased demands to precisely quantify, measure, and control the propagation and scattering of waves in increasingly complex settings pose challenging scientific and mathematical problems. These push the envelope of analysis and comput ing, just as their forerunners did 50 years ago. These modern technological problems range from using underwater sound to monitor and predict global warming, to periodically embedding phase-sensitive amplifiers in optical fibers to insure long range digital communication.

Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamental aspects of nonlinear optics from basic principles to applications. Starting from the polarization induced by an electric field in a material, it relates the induced polarization to the propagating fields. It describes the properties of the induced polarization through a material response expressed both in the time and frequency domains leading to the nonlinear wave equation. The second part of the book focuses on applications of nonlinear interaction between light and matter, and considers nonlinearities in crystals and optical fibers.

Book excerpt: The development of ultrafast lasers has enabled a wide range of applications such as time-resolved spectroscopy, micro-machining and non-linear microscopy. For the past 20 years, solid-state lasers have been the workhorses of ultrafast science. However, they remain bulky and sensitive tools requiring careful alignment. Thus, rare-earth doped fiber lasers have generated significant interest. They can be monolithically integrated and use simple power scalable diode pumping. Thanks to recent advances in the understanding of non-linear pulse evolution in optical fiber, as well as the development of large-core fiber technologies, fiber lasers have achieved performance matching conventional solid-state lasers. This thesis explores the non-linear propagation and parametric conversion of high energy short pulses in normal dispersion optical fibers. A laser source for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy is demonstrated based on frequency conversion of picosecond pulses through four-wave mixing in photonic crystal fiber. The effects of vibrational dephasing on the coherence and compressibility of Raman Stokes pulses generated in chirped-pulse fiber amplifiers are investigated. Finally, all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers are scaled to high pulse energies using large-core fibers. The performance of multimode step-index fiber, chirally-coupled core fiber and photonic crystal fiber is compared. Using fibers with robust modefiltering, fibers lasers delivering up to a megawatt of peak power are demonstrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current long-haul transmission and worldwide complex interconnection of network infrastructure is based on single mode optical fiber which transports information in the form of light pulses. Single mode fibers have low attenuation and dispersion rate as all energy is confined to a single mode and no energy is lost into the cladding. As a result, single mode fibre is suitable for long distance transmission whereas multimode fibre, is mainly used for short distance communication. In addition, single mode fiber delivers diffraction limited high beam quality, guides only Gaussian like field distributions and allows high coupling efficiency. However, due to its core diameter size single mode fiber could not satisfy the future huge communication bandwidth demand, and it is not suitable for very high power fiber amplifiers and lasers. Multimode optical fibers are designed to carry several modes, due to their large core radius. In principle, graded index active multimode fibers could be used for high power fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers. In addition, ytterbium doped multimode fibers are used to overcome the current bandwidth deficit of single mode fibers, through the techniques of spatial mode division multiplexing. Nowadays, high beam quality fiber amplifiers and lasers are required for different applications. However, multimode interferences that result in degradation of beam quality are the main problem for developing high power fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers. So, the question is how to overcome these constraints and use multimode fibers (step-index or graded-index) for these and other applications. The most feasible approach is to convert the Kerr nonlinearity from being a problem to an opportunity for beam cleaning. We performed a numerical study by solving coupled mode equations to investigate this phenomena further. By increasing the input signal power, we observed the transfer of energy from the high order modes to the fundamental mode, due to nonlinear and non-uniform gain coupling along the course of propagation. As a result, the fundamental mode experienced higher gain due to the exchange of power with the other high order modes, and beam cleaning is demonstrated. Furthermore, to explore the nonlinear propagation in doped multimode fibers, we implemented a 3D NLSE in the presence of saturated gain, Kerr nonlinearity and disorder. Our numerical simulations reveal that by increasing the input signal power, the speckled beam reshapes itself after a certain fiber distance, into a clean beam close to single mode operation due to the laser gain and Kerr nonlinearity. The spatial beam self-cleaning phenomenon is further confirmed by examining the beam width at the end of the fiber length, which has reduced diameter than at the beginning of the fiber. Analysis of our results show that numerical simulations agree well with preliminary experimental results.
