The table is spread, the food is nothing extra, but I think you will find it wholesome. So without further ceremony we will ask the Lord's blessing and you may proceed to help yourself. For fifty years I have sat in the pew a target for the pulpit. Unnumbered arrows have been shot at me from the ministerial bow, feathered with logic and rhetoric, sharpened with appeal and exhortation, and some times poisoned with denunciation aud abuse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Living Christ: The Vital Force in Pulpit and Pew What sort Of a being must Christ be in order to be a vital force in pulpit and pew to-day? To say he is the living Christ is hardly sufficient to satisfy the demands of a force, energizing here and now, unless we read into the word living something more than the bare fact Of continued existence. There is no doubt that the patri archs, apostles, saints and holy men of all ages, are living; for God is not the God Of the dead but Of the living; but they are not reckoned as a Vitalizing energy, pervading and transfiguring the lives Of men at the present hour. They have left behind them an influence which, more or less, affects the histdrical trend Of things; but it is an influence gauged and measured by what they were in character, while living in the world, hundreds and perhaps thousands of years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and Pew, or Preacher and People As will be seen on a previous page, this unpretending little volume is dedicated to the ministry and member ship Oi the Church of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; thereby embracing all Christendom. This is done, not to conceal from the reader the predilections of the author for his own denomination - the Cumberland Presbyterian Church - but because there is nothing in this book of a sectarian character - nothing to prevent so comprehensive a dedication. And, because of this fact, the author trusts and believes that hundreds and thou sands outside Oi his Christian fold will read this book with interest and profit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and the Pew: Lyman Beecher Lectures Delivered 1913, Before the Divinity School of Yale University With the understanding then that all functions are holy functions if christianly exercised, and that in itself the calling of one who pleads before the bar is as holy a calling as that of one who preaches from the pulpit, we come back naturally to the proposition, stated a moment ago, that the question of one's life work is to be settled on the basis of constitutional aptitude, and that the Christian young man is under no kind of obligation to enter the ministry and ought not to enter the ministry, on the mere ground that he is a Christian, but on the ground that, added to that, he is by nature adapted to that character of service, if so be that he is so adapted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apologetica: Elemetary Apologetics for Pulpit and Pew The chapters contained in these pages are an attempt to suggest a method of presenting the basic facts of Christianity in the light of reason alone. As much as possible the arguments advanced make no appeal to divine revelation. They contain proofs drawn from natural sources only. They are an essay in the direction of sustaining that the teachings of religion are eminently reasonable. They are an endeavor to show that man, led solely by his reason, is compelled to admit that, of all the views entertained by mankind relatively to the origin and destiny of the race, that view alone is to be accepted which is upheld by Christianity, and especially by the Catholic Church. Infidelity has had the ear of humanity since the beginning. The reason therefor is discoverable in this, that it has pandered to the common desire to remove all the restrictions with which religion, divinely inspired, has sought to impose limits on physical freedom, has sought to inculcate the saving idea that there is a law decreed in heaven which coerces, with moral pressure, the lower inclinations of human nature. The plan is a very simple one. It discusses all the watchwords of incredulity which have had such destructive sway. It aims at demonstrating, by reason only, that these rallying cries are only lures to individual debasement and ultimate loss. It has touched upon the limitations of reason. It has offered to point out the proper function of intelligence and to assign to it its proper place and most becoming attitude. These preliminary notions established, the plan proceeds to take up the insensate clamor that there is no religion, no God, no hereafter, no hell, no eternity, and of course does not omit that pivotal dogma that Christ is neither a myth nor a man only, but God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God. That the work has been imperfectly done is transparent. These chapters are skeletons, in the literal sense of the word. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centenary Thoughts: For the Pew and Pulpit of Methodism in Eighteen Hundred and Eighty-Four The title of this book, while in itself somewhat blind, suffi ciently indicates to the Methodist fraternity its general char acter and intent. We have come to the closing hours of the first hundred years of our denominational history. Natur ally enough the occasion becomes one of special interest to Methodist peoples throughout the world. Crises points, epochal periods, inevitably start emotion and reflection. In the brief life of a man a year is significant, and the anni versary becomes a pivotal point. Great organic movements of society, civic or religious, which carry over ages, and along the lines of generations, fix their commemorative periods by centuries. Nature counts her epochal points by millenniads. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date account of the internal arrangement of church buildings in Western Europe between 1500 and 2000, showing how these arrangements have met the liturgical needs of their respective denominations, Catholic and Protestant, over this period. In addition to a chapter looking at the general impact of the Reformation on church buildings, there are separate chapters on the churches of the Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions between the mid-sixteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, and on the ecclesiological movement of the nineteenth century and the liturgical movement of the twentieth century, both of which have impacted on all the churches of Western Europe over the past 150 years. The book is extensively illustrated with figures in the text and a series of plates and also contains comprehensive guides to both further reading and buildings to visit throughout Western Europe.
