Book excerpt: Known for his distinctive profuse coat of cords, his superior intelligence and his humorous ways, the Puli is not only a beloved companion dog but also a hard-working herding dog and an eye-catching show dog. The breed's uniqueness goes far beyond his woolly, naturally forming cords: this Hungarian shepherd breed is an exceptionally industrious, bouncy canine that is quick in mind and body. Written by well-respected English judge and long-time Puli breeder Ann Arch, this Special Limited Edition provides an insightful chapter on the breed's ancient origins and history in Europe as well as a special section on the breed in the United States and Canada written by guest author Stephanie Horan. Author Ann Arch also discusses the breed's characteristics and the breed standard as well as puppy selection, coat care and maintenance, and she offers specific instructions on rearing and caring for this exceptionally talented dog. This book also details the selection of a breeder and puppy; feeding the puppy, adult and senior dog; puppy-proofing and home safety; and much more. New owners will welcome the chapter on house-training, obedience and canine behavior to help mold their Pulik into biddable home companions. Additionally, a lavishly illustrated chapter on preventive healthcare by Dr. Lowell Ackerman provides up-to-date accurate information on infectious diseases, parasite prevention and control, selecting a veterinarian and other topics vital to the ownership of a healthy pure-bred dog.

Book excerpt: Tired of leading a shepherd’s life, Nimrod yearns to leave the small lives and tents of his village to seek out the excitement and glory found in the big city beyond—Babel. Although cautioned by the love of his life, Semiramis, that she will only wait so long for him to return, Nimrod proceeds to go on a journey with his four best friends—Jared, Zag, Fenchristo, and Raya—all of whom have honed their fighting skills to great heights with the bow, arrow, and sword. Nimrod: The Mighty Hunter chronicles the journey of the biblical character of Nimrod—the rebellious king often associated with the Tower of Babel. From the quiet, serene surrounds of his village to the danger and fighting of the city, read as Nimrod trains up the Babylonian army to protect Babel and discover how this so-called “gang of five” embark on an energetic race for supremacy. Training an ever-increasing army to destroy surrounding towns, Nimrod and Semiramis become engrossed in their newfound powers. A cautionary tale of Noah’s great-grandson comes alive from the pages of the Bible in this captivating retelling of Nimrod’s rise to power. Experience how unbridled passions—even with the purest intent—can lead some men and women straight to hell. Some, but not all.

Book excerpt: The relationship between landscape and culture seen through language is an exciting and increasingly explored area. This ground-breaking book contributes to the linguistic examination of both cross-cultural variation and unifying elements in geographical categorization. The study focuses on the contrastive lexical semantics of certain landscape words in a number of languages. The aim is to show how geographical vocabulary sheds light on the culturally and historically shaped ways people see and think about the land around them. Notably, the study presents landscape concepts as anchored in a human-centred perspective, based on our cognition, vision, and experience in places. The Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach allows an analysis of meaning which is both fine-grained and transparent. The book is aimed, first of all, at scholars and students of linguistics. Yet it will also be of interest to researchers in geography, environmental studies, anthropology, cultural studies, Australian Studies, and Australian Aboriginal Studies because of the book’s cultural take.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Strehlow’s comparative dictionary manuscript is a unique item of Australian cultural heritage; it is a large collection of circa 7,600 Aranda, 6,800 Loritja (Luritja) and 1,200 Dieri to German entries compiled at the beginning of the twentieth century at the Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia. It is an integral part of Strehlow’s ethnographic work on Aboriginal cultures that his German editor Baron Moritz von Leonhardi published as Die Aranda- und Loritja-Stämme in Zentral-Australien (Strehlow 1907–1920) in Frankfurt. Strehlow and his editor had planned to publish a language study that included this comparative dictionary, but it remained unpublished until now due to a number of complicated historical and personal circumstances of the main characters involved with the dictionary. Strehlow’s linguistic work is historically and anthropologically significant because it probably represents the largest and most comprehensive wordlist of Indigenous languages compiled in Australia during the early stages of contact. It is an important primary source for Luritja and Aranda speakers. Both languages are spoken in homes and taught in schools in central Australia. The reasons for presenting this work as a heritage dictionary—that is, as an exact transcription of the original form of the handwritten manuscript—are to follow the Western Aranda people’s wishes and to maintain its historical authenticity, which will prove to be of great use to both Indigenous people and scholars interested in language.

Book excerpt: Cherr’e Moraga, Migdalia Cruz, Caridad Svich, Josefina Lopez , Edit Villarreal and Diana S‡ena are in the vanguard of contemporary Hispanic women playwrights in the United States. The voices of three generations of Hispanic women are heard in these plays as the women explore their bicultural heritage, articulating what it means to be a Hispanic woman and, in essence, shattering the myths that have been associated with that heritage. The plays of Shattering the Myth illuminate a feminine language rich with texture and character, a language that has far too long been hidden from this countryÕs cultural tapestry. Opening the anthology is an introduction by Linda Feyder which provides background on the playwrights and their works. The plays in the collection were chosen by noted playwright and novelist Denise Ch‡vez.
