Book Synopsis Making and Unmaking of Puget Sound by : Gary C. Howard
Download or read book Making and Unmaking of Puget Sound written by Gary C. Howard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puget Sound is a complex fjord-estuary system in Washington State that is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Juan de Fuca Strait and surrounded by several large population centers. The watershed is enormous, covering nearly 43,000 square kilometers with thousands of rivers and streams. Geological forces, volcanos, Ice Ages, and changes in sea levels make the Sound a biologically dynamic and fascinating environment, as well as a productive ecosystem. Human activity has also influenced the Sound. Humans built several major cities, such as Seattle and Tacoma, have dramatically affected the Puget Sound. This book describes the natural history and evolution of Puget Sound over the last 100 million years through the present and into the future. Key Features Summarizes a complex geological, geographical, and ecological history Reviews how the Puget Sound has changed and will likely change in the future Examines the different roles of various drivers of the Sound’s ecosystem function Includes the role of humans—both first people and modern populations. Explores Puget Sound as an example of general bay ecological and environmental issues
Book Synopsis Beaches and Bluffs of Puget Sound and the Northern Straits by :
Download or read book Beaches and Bluffs of Puget Sound and the Northern Straits written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaches and bluffs of the Puget Sound region provide critical nearshore habitat functions and values for the region's fish and wildlife. Coastal bluffs are the primary source of beach sediment along the Puget Sound shore, and their natural erosion is essential for maintaining beaches and associated nearshore habitats. Critical habitats dependent on functioning coastal systems include coastal forests, spawning beaches for forage fish (such as surf smelt), eel-grass beds, and salt marshes, all of which shape the health of salmon populations.
Book Synopsis The Proceedings Of The Coastal Sediments 2015 by : Jun Cheng
Download or read book The Proceedings Of The Coastal Sediments 2015 written by Jun Cheng and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 3129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Proceedings contains over 260 papers on cutting-edge research presented at the eighth international Symposium on Coastal Sediment Processes, held May 11 - 15, 2015, in San Diego, California, USA. This technical specialty conference was devoted to promoting an interdisciplinary exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge among researchers in the fields of coastal engineering, geology, oceanography, and related disciplines, with the theme of Understanding and Working with Nature.Focusing on the physical aspects of the sediment processes in various coastal environments, this Proceedings provides findings from the latest research and newest engineering applications. Sessions covered a wide range of topics including barrier islands, beaches, climate and sea level, cohesive and noncohesive sediments, coastal bluffs, coastal marsh, dredged sediments, inlet and navigation channels, regional sediment management, river deltas, shore protection, tsunamis, and vegetation-sediment interaction. Several special sessions included: Relevant science for changing coastlines: A Tribute to Gary Griggs; North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study and post-super-storm Sandy work; long-term coastal evolution; barrier islands of Louisiana; sea-level rise and super storms in a warming world; predicting decadal coastal geomorphic evolution; and contrasting Pacific coastal behavior with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), are also featured.

Book Synopsis Nature's Value in Clallam County: Policy Implications of the Economic Benefits of Feeder Bluffs and 12 Other Ecosystems by : Lola Flores
Download or read book Nature's Value in Clallam County: Policy Implications of the Economic Benefits of Feeder Bluffs and 12 Other Ecosystems written by Lola Flores and published by . This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides the first comprehensive economic assessment of Clallam County's natural landscapes. Comprised of two separate valuations: a 'primary' valuation of feeder bluff ecosystems. Using biophysical data, the economic value of sediment provided by coastal cliffs to beaches down current was calculated. The term feeder bluff is applied particularly to headlands and bluffs of the Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. And a 'benefit transfer' economic valuation of ecosystem services found across all Clallam County's land covers. The results of this study can be used to inform the county's Shoreline Master Program update currently underway, and will enable stakeholders to better understand the economic importance of land use policies such as No Net Loss, setbacks, and other requirements along the shoreline and within other critical areas throughout Clallam County.
