Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility (VKF) is one of the four major laboratories of the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), Air Force Systems Command, USAF, located near Tullahoma, Tennessee. The test facilities at the AEDC, including the VKF, are operated by a private company, ARO, Inc. (subsidiary of Sverdrup and Parcel, Inc.) under a contract with the U.S. Air Force. The AEDC's main purpose is to provide advanced and large-scale test facilities for use by the Air Force, other government agencies, and contractors. The VKF's responsibility is in the fields of supersonic and hypersonic aerodynamics and hypervelocity impact. The tests which have been conducted in the VKF included support for the following major weapon and space systems: USAF; F103, F105, F106, B58, B70, X15, Dynasoar, Atlas, Titan, Minuteman, Skybolt U.S. Army: Redstone, Pershing, Nike-Zeus U.S. Navy: Polaris, Sparrow NASA: X15, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Saturn Actually, components of practically all of the existing and now planned weapon and space systems have been tested in the VKF.

Book Synopsis Facing the Heat Barrier by : T.A. Heppenheimer
Download or read book Facing the Heat Barrier written by T.A. Heppenheimer and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume from The NASA History Series presents an overview of the science of hypersonics, the study of flight at speeds at which the physics of flows is dominated by aerodynamic heating. The survey begins during the years immediately following World War II, with the first steps in hypersonic research: the development of missile nose cones and the X-15; the earliest concepts of hypersonic propulsion; and the origin of the scramjet engine. Next, it addresses the re-entry problem, which came to the forefront during the mid-1950s, showing how work in this area supported the manned space program and contributed to the development of the orbital shuttle. Subsequent chapters explore the fading of scramjet studies and the rise of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program of 1985–95, which sought to lay groundwork for single-stage vehicles. The program's ultimate shortcomings — in terms of aerodynamics, propulsion, and materials — are discussed, and the book concludes with a look at hypersonics in the post-NASP era, including the development of the X-33 and X-34 launch vehicles, further uses for scramjets, and advances in fluid mechanics. Clearly, ongoing research in hypersonics has yet to reach its full potential, and readers with an interest in aeronautics and astronautics will find this book a fascinating exploration of the field's history and future.
Book Synopsis Analytical and Experimental Thermal Analysis of a Guided Bomb by : W. K. Crain
Download or read book Analytical and Experimental Thermal Analysis of a Guided Bomb written by W. K. Crain and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a technology program to investigate the transient heating problems associated with high-speed carriage of conventional stores, an analytical and experimental thermal analysis was conducted on a guided bomb. The objective of this work was to investigate the technology necessary to develop an analytic model from which store internal component thermal response could be generated. In addition, a radiant-heat ground test was conducted on instrumented flight hardware for the purpose of generating experimental data for calibrating the analytic model. A new test technique was developed to simulate the predicted flight heating distribution over the store. The results demonstrate an analytical and experimental approach for predicting store internal component thermal response. Comparison of the analytic model and ground test results shows adequate agreement in the bomb section but a general lack of agreement in sections containing electronic components. This lack of agreement is attributed to the uncertainty in component thermal properties, contact resistance, modeling assumptions, and general complexity of the store hardware. The results illustrate the importance in experimental validation of the analytic model. (Author).
Book Synopsis Effects of Wall Cooling and Leading-edge Blunting on Ramp-induced, Laminar Flow Separations at Mach Numbers from 3 Through 6 by : J. Don Gray
Download or read book Effects of Wall Cooling and Leading-edge Blunting on Ramp-induced, Laminar Flow Separations at Mach Numbers from 3 Through 6 written by J. Don Gray and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of wall cooling and nose bluntness on laminar and transitional reattaching flows induced by a 9.5-degree ramp were investigated at Mach numbers from 3 through 6 measuring the longitudinal surface pressure and heat-transfer rate distributions, as well as the flow-field pressures, at several longitudinal stations. Reynolds number based on flat-plate length was varied from 0.25 to 1.0 million. The trend in the change in interaction length with Reynolds number increase indicated laminar reattachment at all test Reynolds numbers at M = 6 and transitional at the two higher Reynolds numbers at M = 3.
Book Synopsis Free-flight Investigation of Ablation Effects N the Stability of Conical Reentry Configurations by : C. J. Welsh
Download or read book Free-flight Investigation of Ablation Effects N the Stability of Conical Reentry Configurations written by C. J. Welsh and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 1000-ft aeroballistics range was used to obtain free-flight stability and drag data for slightly blunted 10-deg semiangle cones with and without ablation occurring on the conical skirts. The configurations investigated included ones having fore- and aft-positioned ablation sleeves, as well as one with a skirt material which did not ablate. The investigation was conducted for a Mach number near 14 and a Reynolds number, based on cone length and free-stream conditions, of about 55000.
