After the two first editions, devoted to Terminology and cultural models (1997) and to Terminology and cognition (1999), the three lectures of the l III Symposium are devoted to the analysis of sources of specialized knowledge and terminology. The first lecture, presented by Lita Lundquist (Copenhaguen Business School), is about the production of specialized knowledge. The second lecture, presented by Cristina Junyent (Observatori de la Comunicació Científica de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra), is about the problems of the transference of specialized knowledge. The third lecture, presented by Mercè Izquierdo (Departament de Didàctica de les Matemàtiques i de les Ciències Experimentals de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), analyzes the teaching of specialized knowledge. The volumen has a four tex from the a lecture of Professor Josep Bernabeu-Mestre (University of Alacant) in the III Escuela Internacional de Verano de Terminología, and is about the terminology problems in historical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in a series of planned volumes focused on preserving the character of the development of bioethics in particular cultural contexts. As the first of these volumes, Leo Pessini, Christian de Paul de Barchifontaine, and Fernando Lolas Stepke’s work has succeeded well. It has brought together accounts by sch- ars who were crucial to the emergence of bioethics in the Ibero-American cultural domain. This trail-blazing work in the history of bioethics will be of enduring s- nificance. I am deeply in their debt for having shouldered this far from easy task. Bioethics is the product of very particular socio-historical developments. Most prominent among them have been (1) the secularization of the dominant culture of North America, Western Europe, and now Central and South America as well, (2) a deflation of the status and authority of physicians as moral authorities able to guide their own profession, and (3) the salience of a post-traditional animus that gives c- tral place to persons as isolated atomic sources of moral authority. Bioethics initially took shape in North America as a post-Christian, post-professional, post-traditional social movement. This bioethics sought to establish a moral discourse for the public forum, a moral practice able to give practical guidance in hospitals and other insti- tions, and a body of undergirding and justifying theoretical reflections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding natural substances is worthwhile in food preservation. The principal motivation behind this edited volume, Antimicrobials for Sustainable Food Storage, is to collect and present widespread knowledge in the domain of sustainable food ingredients with antimicrobial properties. The book consists of two sections. The first section of this volume is about food ingredients as antimicrobials, and the second section discusses the recent advances in the applications of food ingredients. Interplay of various environmental factors favors the growth of different microorganisms during the food preservation process. Growth of undesirable microorganisms negatively influences the taste, smell, color, and texture of food. Therefore, sustainable food preservation is a challenging issue. Though several chemicals have emerged, inevitable health effects are commonly encountered by food preserve chemicals. Microbial products (nisin, enterocin, pentosin, sakacin, and pediocin) have immense importance in prolonging the shelf life of food substances by controlling food spoilage and pathogenic microbes. Yeasts and cyanobacteria are also potential candidates in the supply of food ingredients with significant antimicrobial properties. However, limited awareness of antimicrobials as food ingredients and the unavailability of a single source of the latest insights on such food ingredients in one place led to the motivation to produce this work. Key Features: Provides insights on natural antimicrobials in food preservation Underlines the importance of sustainable food packaging Offers knowledge on emerging trends in antimicrobial-based food storage Diverse applications are covered in different chapters. This book covers various antimicrobials as food preservatives, such as metabolites, natural products, essential oils, nanomaterials, L-arginine, polyphenols, phaeophyceae, and horchata. There are also chapters that focus on the applicability and prospective studies of essential oils, edible biofilms, biodegradable antimicrobials, and nanostructured lipid carriers in the food sector and the method for encapsulation of antimicrobials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecules, Cells, and Parasites in Immunology contains the proceedings of a symposium on immunology held in Mexico City in the fall of 1979 under the auspices of the National University of Mexico (UNAM). This volume brings together prominent foreign scientists and Mexican investigators to discuss the areas of immunology that being developed at UNAM. Either in the form of reviews or of original presentations, the various authors proffer observations and ideas that generally relate to the regulation of the immune response at the molecular and cellular levels. The topic of Molecules encompasses the effect of molecular aggregation upon the triggering of physiological events, cooperative binding, and the expression of immunoglobulins during the lymphocyte differentiation process. Under the heading of Cells, there are contributions dealing with the physiological and pathological roles of interiorized antibodies; the mechanisms of antigen recognition by T cells; and the synthesis of membrane proteins by myeloma cells which somehow protect them from killer T cells. The section on Parasites includes some unique contributions on the immunology of human and animal cysticercosis and amebiasis, complemented by a general discussion of host-parasite relationships.
