Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gender equality duty came into force on 6 April 2007. This is the result of the amendment of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 by the Equality Act 2006 (ISBN 9780105403067), and it places a statutory duty on all public authorities, when carrying out their functions, to have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment, and to promote equality of opportunity between men and women. The duty is intended to address the fact that, despite 30 years of individual legal rights to sex equality, there is still widespread discrimination and persistent gender inequality. This code of practice gives practical guidance to public authorities on how to meet the legal requirements of the general duty, and the specific duties required of certain authorities by the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (Public Authorities) (Statutory Duties) Order 2006 (SI 2006/2930, ISBN 9780110752822).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The provision of state funded and democratically accountable care services represents one of the most potentially transformative advances in gendered social relations and equality for women by ‘defamilizing’ care and providing paid work. But the cost of providing these services, which women have access to them and how they should be provided are always at the forefront of debate, especially during economic crises. Socially funded and publicly accountable care services are therefore a key site of feminist activity, but also the frontline for spending cuts and 'reform' during times of austerity. Gender Equality in Public Services analyses how gender equality work in British public services is changing in response to factors including: equality legislation; the erosion of local democracy, privatisation of public services and new forms of feminist activism and leadership. It also assesses the challenges and opportunities for promoting women’s equality in producing and using public services. Impacting upon developed and developing economies, the arguments in this challenging book explore the potential of equality and feminist activism and leadership for radical and transformational change. It will appeal to advanced students, researchers and practitioners interested in social policy, feminist organization theory, equal opportunities and gender mainstreaming practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication sets out the gender equality duty code of practice for public sector managers in Scotland. One of its principle aims is to help the public sector understand and address the different needs of women and men, leading to more user-friendly services, as well as making better use of the talents of both women and men in the workforce. The gender equality duty came into force in April 2007, and can be seen as the biggest change in sex equality legislation in 30 years, since the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act (ISBN PGA 1975 Chp. 65, ISBN 9780105465751) itself, and also reflects the aims of the Equal Pay Act 1970 (PGA 1970 Chp. 41, ISBN 9780105441700), along with incorporating amendments made through the Equality Act 2006 (PGA 2006 Chp. 3, ISBN 9780105403067). The introduction of the duty forms part of a radical new approach to equality in general, one that places more responsibility with service providers to think strategically about gender equality, and help make Scottish public authorities meet the duty

This book was released on 2008-06-26 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document sets out the Government's aims for the forthcoming Equality Bill. A substantial body of equality legislation has been introduced over the last four decades, but the legislation has become complex and hard to understand. The Equality Bill will declutter and strengthen the law. The Bill will introduce a new Equality Duty on the public sector, replacing the three existing duties on race, disability and gender and extending to gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation and religion or belief. The Bill will contain powers to outlaw unjustifiable age discrimination, but there will be further consultation on the design of the legislation before the new legal protections are introduced. Transparency is essential to tackling discrimination, and public bodies will have to comply with the Equality Duty over gender pay, ethnic minority employment and disability employment. The Government will work with business to improve transparency in the private sector. The Bill will extend the scope of positive action so that employers can take account, when selecting between two equally qualified candidates, under-representation of disadvantaged groups. Permission to use women-only shortlists for parliamentary candidates will be extended to 2030. Non-legislative measures to increase the number of ethnic minority elected representatives in Parliament and local councils will be pursued. Finally the Bill will aim to strengthen enforcement. Tribunals will be allowed to make wider recommendations in discrimination cases, which will go beyond benefitting the individual taking the case so that there are benefits for the rest of the workforce of the employer found to have discriminated. A more comprehensive paper on the content of the Bill will be published shortly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tackles the challenges that women face in the workplace generally and in the public sector particularly. While Women and Public Service spends time identifying and describing the problems that women faced in the past, it pays special attention to identifying possible remedies to these problems, and also surveys progress made in recent decades. The authors present the challenge of accommodating women in public sector organisations as both a fairness issue and also a human resources matter, as a fundamental prerequisite for recruiting the best and brightest talent. Key content coverage: The representation of women in public organisations, including occupational, agency and position level segregation Issues of pay equity--legislation, equal worth measures, and the serious links between the issue of representation and equal pay Special issues facing women in their workplace, including institutional climate, workplace violence, sexual harassment, social costs of career progression, and family-friendly policies.
