Book excerpt: This report provides an assessment of public/private partnerships, the challenges they face, and their potential within the nation's transportation system. Included are examples that highlight activities in various transportation modes and the lessons they demonstrate. The report draws the following conclusions: Public/private partnerships in transportation have had modest success as compared to other public policy agendas. The success of these partnerships is limited by factors such as divergent motivations, limited resources, evolving legal constraints, and changing agendas among participants. Preventive strategies that minimize the impact of these challenges are needed. In order for transportation-related partnerships to achieve a fuller potential, additional efforts are needed to leverage existing research and development investments and build new ones, possibly as part of the overall R & D investment environment. This report will support decision makers in the public, private, non-profit, and academic sectors as they examine and develop opportunities for public/private partnership in transportation and other related fields. Book Synopsis Handbook on Public Private Partnerships in Transportation, Vol II by : Simon Hakim
Download or read book Handbook on Public Private Partnerships in Transportation, Vol II written by Simon Hakim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in a two-volume set, this book discusses the role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in global transportation infrastructure, specifically focusing on roads, bridges, and parking. To provide vital services in an era of shrinking government budgets, public-private partnerships have become an increasingly important part of travel infrastructure worldwide. This book describes and analyses the structure of various models of PPPs in several countries, evaluating their effectiveness, and drawing policy implications for future use. The chapters were written by leading international researchers and practitioners in the transportation field where each chapter is a case study on the adoption, implementation, and outcome of transportation services. Taken together, these diverse case studies provide an integrated framework for evaluating, using PPPs, and suggesting policy implications to both the public and the private sectors in transportation. Providing rigorous empirical analysis of PPPs in transportation, this volume will be of interest to researchers in public administration, political science, public choice, and economics as well as practitioners and policymakers involved in establishing and monitoring PPPs in transportation.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Transportation Systems by : Robert Gordon
Download or read book Intelligent Transportation Systems written by Robert Gordon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent Transportation Systems: Functional Design for Economical and Efficient Traffic Management provides practical guidance on the efficient use of resources in the design of ITS. The author explains how functional design alternatives can meet project objectives and requirements with optimal cost effectiveness and clarifies how transportation planning and traffic diversion principles relate to functional ITS device selections and equipment locations. Methodologies for translating objectives to functional device types, determining device deployment densities and determining the best placement of CCTV cameras and message signs are provided, as are models for evaluating the benefits of design alternatives based on traffic conditions. Readers will learn how to reduce recurrent congestion, improve incident clearance time in non-recurrent congestion, provide real-time incident information to motorists, and leverage transportation management center data for lane control through important new active transportation and demand management (ATDM) methods. Finally, the author examines exciting developments in connected vehicle technologies, exploring their potential to greatly improve safety, mobility and energy efficiency. This resource will greatly benefit all ITS designers and managers and is of pivotal importance for operating agencies performing evaluations to justify operational funding and system expansions.
