Book excerpt: As the Nation's principle conservation agency, the Department of the Interior has basic responsibilities for water, fish, wildlife, mineral, land, park, and recreational resources. Interior, America's 'Department of Natural Resources, ' works to assure the wisest choice in managing all of our resources so that each will make it's fully contribution to a better United States -- now and in the future. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is part of the United States Department of the Interior. Its responsibilities encompass 272 million acres of public lands and administration and management of approximately 300 million acres of mineral rights. It also maintains the legal status for 331 million acres of reservations created from public lands, such as the national parks, national wildlife refuges, and national forests ... To manage these resources, the Bureau must be able to accurately identify and locate the increasingly valuable areas of land with which it has been entrusted. BLM's Cadastral Survey Program is responsible for the creation, restoration, marking and defining the boundaries of these lands. Cadastral Survey is also responsible for the official boundary surveys for all federal agencies who together manage over 700 million acres of land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Initially prepared as a text-book for mature students, this slim volume now serves to instruct serious researchers on the American survey system in non-technical terms. Easy-to-read, comprehensive in scope, the original edition was issued in 1894. Over a century earlier, the future president, Jefferson, had based his report on public statutes and original documents; his compilation was submitted to Congress in 1784. The introduction is new to this edition, written by a renowned authority on land records as valuable tools for genealogical research. It places the work in modern-day perspective for genealogists and historians who recognize the immense potential importance of records dealing with land and the conveyance of real-property." -- Publisher website (December 2008).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Land Surveys of the United States: Based Upon Public Statutes and Documents and on the Report Submitted to Congress in the Year 1784 by Thomas Jefferson This book is not designed to teach surveying, nor the more intricate parts of the United States System of Land Surveys. It has been thought that there was a demand in various parts Of the country for such a teaching of the Government Land Surveys as would enable all children to understand the base of the system, and its divisions and subdivisions, so far as these were important and necessary in the ordi nary vocations of life. Some states require this much to be taught in the public schools, and the importance of this knowledge is everywhere conceded. It has been deemed prudent to confine the scope of this small book to the simpler parts of the system. Enough is written to enable any ordinary pupil to grasp the fundamental ideas, to understand the method, and to know the practical results. The township and section, with their divisions, subdivisions, and methods of description. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
