Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I investigate two related aspects of corporate disclosure of earnings forecasts. Specifically, I empirically model managers' disclosure decisions as a sequential choice: managers first decide whether to publicly issue an earnings forecast and, if they decide to disclose, they choose the precision with which to make this disclosure. I classify point forecasts as the most precise, and all other forecasts as less precise. I estimate dichotomous choice logistic regressions for each of these decisions. I examine the effect of both capital market and product market considerations on these two aspects of the disclosure decision. Broadly, the analysis suggests that while capital market considerations are the primary determinant of the decision to disclose, product market considerations appear to be important in determining disclosure precision. In particular, disclosure precision appears to be decreasing (increasing) in proprietary costs for good (bad) news firms. This study adds to recent analytical and empirical research on the influence of product market considerations on disclosure decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines whether a corporate disclosure practice is a reason for the forecast dispersion anomaly -- the negative relation between analyst forecast dispersion and future stock returns. Prior studies have shown that firms tend to disclose good news in a timely manner and delay the disclosure of bad news, and that withholding of news leads to greater dispersion in analysts' forecasts. Accordingly, we predict that firms with higher dispersion in analysts' earnings forecasts are more likely to experience poor earnings in subsequent quarters, and find evidence consistent with this prediction. After controlling for the relation between forecast dispersion and future earnings, we find that forecast dispersion is no longer negatively related to future stock returns. These results suggest that firms' tendency to withhold bad news increases forecast dispersion as well as causes the market to temporarily overvalue stocks until the bad news is publicly released.

Book excerpt: This study seeks to examine the impact of the continuous disclosure regulatory reform on the likelihood, frequency and qualitative characteristics of management earnings forecasts in New Zealand where a low private litigation environment prevails. This provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of a public regulatory reform in the absence of any viable private enforcement alternative. Using a sample of 720 management earnings forecasts issued by 94 firms listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange during the financial reporting periods ending from 31 January 1999 to 31 December 2005, we provide strong evidence of significant changes in management earnings forecast behaviour in the post-regulatory reform period. Specifically, firms were more likely to issue an earnings forecast to pre-empt their earnings announcements and forecasting firms provided a greater number of earnings forecasts which were also more precise and accurate. These findings add to the concurrent evidence that the enhancement of public enforcement in New Zealand has had positive impact on corporate behaviour and capital market characteristics in an environment where there is a very low threat of private enforcement. This may indicate that public regulatory reforms are able to have a greater benefit where low private litigation environment prevails. This study provides insight into the impact of a public regulatory reform on corporate disclosure behaviour which may contribute to the debate regarding the value of further public regulatory reform of corporate requirements internationally.
