This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a National Bureau of Economic Research Income and Wealth conference held in December 1983, this volume looks at the concept of "economic well-being" and the ways that analysts have tried to measure it. In addition to income, economists have begun to consider such factors as pensions, wealth, health, and environment when measuring the well-being of a particular group. They have also begun to measure how consumers respond, successfully or unsuccessfully, to such economic uncertainties as inflation, divorce, and retirement. Using new data and techniques, the contributors to this book concentrate on issues of uncertainty and horizontal equity (the equal treatment of individuals within a defined group). Their work points to better ways of determining how various groups in a society are faring relative to other groups. Economists and policy analysts, therefore, will be in a better position to determine how government programs should be applied when well-being is used as a test.

Book Synopsis Income Security and Public Assistance for Women and Children by : Keith Michael Kilty
Download or read book Income Security and Public Assistance for Women and Children written by Keith Michael Kilty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1997 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Income Security and Public Assistance for Women and Children provides a progressive perspective on social, political, and economic inequalities in relation to women and children and their income security. Most of the contemporary discourse on income security and public assistance comes from people who have no awareness of what it means to live in poverty. This volume, in contrast, offers those who are in poverty an opportunity to present what they believe they need to have in order to become independent. It also provides pragmatic and politically viable options to ensure the income security of poor women and children, particularly on the federal level. Income Security and Public Assistance for Women and Children challenges prevailing conceptions--that government assistance creates dependency and exacerbates the position of poor women and children--of public assistance and social welfare in American society. You'll gain new perspectives on the “welfare reform” debate as you read informative chapters about: expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit for income security for children inter-state inequities in children's income security feminist methodology welfare mothers’identified needs for becoming economically self-sufficient family caregiving and public assistance health care and the poor poverty and child placement federal protection of vulnerable children possible negative impacts of potential legislative changes The goal of Income Security and Public Assistance for Women and Children is to bring to task the mean-spirited ideas that many politicians are espousing as “welfare reform.” You'll see how recent legislative developments make the situation even more desperate for many women and children who are barely above the poverty level as the book reviews the nature of recently enacted changes, such as block grants, and makes proposals for establishing a national income security program for children. Academics in the fields of sociology, social work, women's studies, and political science; policymakers in social agencies and public welfare organizations; and advocates for women and children will find this book gives invaluable insight and direction for ensuring income security and public assistance for women and children in the future.
Book Synopsis Losing Ground (10th Anniversary Edition) by : Charles Murray

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book serves as a starting point for any serious discussion of welfare reform. Losing Ground argues that the ambitious social programs of the1960s and 1970s actually made matters worse for its supposed beneficiaries, the poor and minorities. Charles Murray startled readers by recommending that we abolish welfare reform, but his position launched a debate culminating in President Clinton's proposal “to end welfare as we know it.”

Book Synopsis Divorce in Psychosocial Perspective by : Joseph Guttmann
Download or read book Divorce in Psychosocial Perspective written by Joseph Guttmann and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1993-03 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books deal with divorce and its aftermath -- some deal with the impact of divorce on children and families, others with the legal or sociological aspects of divorce, and a few focus on divorced mothers and fathers. Most of these books are characterized by their practical orientation toward the issues and problems posed by divorce. None of these, however, have attempted to offer an integrated view of the massive amount of theoretical and research literature on divorced adults and their children. In addition, none present a comprehensive view of divorce as a psychological process within its larger social context. Filling that void, this book: * offers a comprehensive view of divorce as a social, interpersonal and psychological phenomenon, * reviews the theory and research on divorce focusing on the major protagonists of the divorce drama: the mother, the father and the children, and * introduces a social-psychological theory of divorce process.
Book Synopsis The Expansion of Economics by : Shoshana Grossbard-Shechtman
Download or read book The Expansion of Economics written by Shoshana Grossbard-Shechtman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics, like most other social sciences, is not a pure discipline. Indeed, it has been enhanced by the fact that there is so much overlap between it and the related fields of business, industrial relations, political science, social psychology, and sociology. This book is the first attempt to explain how work in economics has influenced and benefited from a merging of economic analysis with the research practices of these related fields of study. With contributions from leading economists from around the world, it demonstrates how economics is leading the way toward a more unified social science.

Book Synopsis Falling from Grace by : Katherine S. Newman
Download or read book Falling from Grace written by Katherine S. Newman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last three decades, millions of people have slipped through a loophole in the American dream and become downwardly mobile as a result of downsizing, plant closings, mergers, and divorce: the middle-aged computer executive laid off during an industry crisis, blue-collar workers phased out of the post-industrial economy, middle managers whose positions have been phased out, and once-affluent housewives stranded with children and a huge mortgage as the result of divorce. Anthropologist Katherine S. Newman interviewed a wide range of men, women, and children who experienced a precipitous fall from middle-class status, and her book documents their stories. For the 1999 edition, Newman has provided a new preface and updated the extensive data on job loss and downward mobility in the American middle class, documenting its persistence, even in times of prosperity.

Book excerpt: Households headed by women are a growing presence worldwide. This is the first book to focus on their diversity and dynamics in developing countries. Set within the context of global trends and debates on female household headship, and using case-study material based on interviews with low-income women in Mexico, Costa Rica and the Philippines, the analysis explores the reasons for the formation and increase in women-headed households in different parts of the world, and their capacity for survival in societies where male-headed households are both the norm and ideal.
