Book excerpt: Psychotic States brings together a number of the author's papers written between 1946 and 1964 dealing with the psychopathology and treatment of various psychotic and borderline conditions from a psychoanalytic viewpoint. Taking the theories and techniques developed by Melanie Klein in her work with infants and young children, the author investigated their application to a range of psychotic syndromes, including chronic and acute schizophrenia, severe hypochondriasis, drug addiction, severe depression and manic depression, both to determine their possible therapeutic efficacy and to see what light they might shed on the etiology of the psychosis.

Book Synopsis Depression in Schizophrenics by : Richard Williams
Download or read book Depression in Schizophrenics written by Richard Williams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters of this volume were originally presented at a symposium on "Depression in Schizophrenics" held at the University of Calgary, Health Sciences Centre on July 06 and 07, 1988. It was the intent of the organizers to draw together leading international researchers to address, in a comprehensive fashion, the persisting problem of depression in schizophrenic individuals. As many of the authors point out, depression was clearly identified as a central problem in schizophrenia by the pioneers of psychiatry. Their wisdom and clinical acumen was lost for a time to be only recently re discovered. Their insights must now be integrated with modern taxonomic systems, evolving etiological models and methods of assessment. With increased recognition of the problem of depression in this population we must also examine appropriate methods of ameliorating the suffering of those afflicted. The conference was divided into sections (theoretical aspects, phenomenology, suicide and treatment) and the chairmen of these sections have given brief introductions. Necessary overlap of topics and methods provided a convergent and validating examination of empirical results which may serve to direct continuing studies. As well we hope that thoughtful review may directly influence clinical practice and thereby improve the quality of life for schizophrenic patients.
Book Synopsis Dialogues with Schizophrenia by : Rafael Springmann-Ribak
Download or read book Dialogues with Schizophrenia written by Rafael Springmann-Ribak and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-05-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the biological basis of psychotic illnesses cannot be denied, psychological factors have a profound influence on how patients experience their effects. Filled with historical references and case studies, "Dialogues with Schizophrenia: The Art of Psychotherapy" offers a fascinating account of the role psychotherapy plays in this process. A unique feature of "Dialogues with Schizophrenia" is the author's willingness to discuss his own mistakes. This does not often occur in the writings of other master clinicians, who tend to point out and analyze their errors only occasionally. Such omissions leave the junior reader measuring his or her competence against the seemingly flawless expert. Dr. Springmann-Ribak's more comprehensive perspective is fresh, informative, and extremely useful to students and clinicians alike. Rafael Springmann-Ribak, MD, is a specialist in psychiatry and a retired senior lecturer at the school of psychotherapy, Tel Aviv University Medical School. Previously in charge of several psychiatric units, he was responsible for in-service training. Among his many positions were chief psychiatrist of the IDF and director of mental health services in the Ministry of Health.
Book Synopsis Schema Therapy Adapted for Psychosis and Bipolarity by : John Rhodes
Download or read book Schema Therapy Adapted for Psychosis and Bipolarity written by John Rhodes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Schema Therapy and its underlying theory might be used in work with clients who suffer from psychosis, bipolarity and related symptoms. The first part of the book presents in-depth qualitative research featuring first-person testimonies that describe the self-states or ‘modes’ of a person with psychosis or bipolarity. These self-states involve a range of features, such as emotions, thoughts, motivations and behaviours, which manifest as patterns. The second part proposes the adaptation and application of Schema Therapy, a transdiagnostic approach working with emotion and interpersonal functioning for clinical work with these two groups. Offering unique insights, this text will appeal to a range of practicing clinicians, such as psychologists, therapists, psychiatrists and those with a special interest in psychosis or bipolarity.
Book Synopsis Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia by : Bertram P. Karon
Download or read book Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia written by Bertram P. Karon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1981 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inevitably, every psychotherapist has some experience with severely disturbed patients. Consequently, they will turn with excitement to this important new book which is a stunning attempt by two knowledgeable, persevering psychotherapists to present their understanding and sound therapeutic approach to these difficult and challenging patients. The authors argue that the treatment of choice is clearly psychotherapy and that such treatment can be successful and as long lasting for schizophrenic patients as it is for neurotic patients, but the journey may be longer and it may take more time to traverse. The task of therapy is to untangle the past from the present to make the future conceivable. The volume provides a thorough historical overview of the theoretical and clinical approaches to the problem of schizophrenia, including the views of leading contemporary clinicians on the topic. In general, the major clinical controversies have been regarded as issues of whether to focus on past, present or future; reality or fantasy; affects; exploration or relationship; whether the therapist should be active or passive; and how to handle regression. The authors argue that these are the wrong issues. They say that the task of therapy is to untangle the past from the present to make the future conceivable. Reality and fantasy are intertwined and must both be dealt with. Affects are central to all therapy, and emphasis on anger, despair, loneliness, terror, and shame are all necessary, as is the clarification of affect, and the acceptance of positive affect. Activity versus passivity is again in the wrong question; the right one is what action is helpful, when it is helpful, and when is not doing anything helpful? Regression is inevitable; should one accept it fully or try to limit it? This has no general answer other than do what is necessary (i.e., unavoidable) or most helpful to a particular patient at a particular time.

Book Synopsis Psychotherapy for People Diagnosed with Schizophrenia by : Andrew Lotterman
Download or read book Psychotherapy for People Diagnosed with Schizophrenia written by Andrew Lotterman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique book, Andrew Lotterman describes a creative approach to the psychotherapy of people diagnosed with schizophrenia and other forms of psychosis. Lotterman focuses on specific techniques that can be used in psychological therapy with people who have symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, ideas of reference, looseness of association and pressured speech. Formerly titled Specific Techniques for the Psychotherapy of Schizophrenic Patients, this edition updates research on the biology and psychology of psychosis and explores the many controversial issues surrounding diagnosis. It also includes two new chapters on the psychology and treatment of paranoia and on the experience of having a shattered self and the delusion of being the Messiah. Lotterman’s innovative approach aims to help patients with one of the most debilitating symptoms of psychosis: the collapse of language use. By restoring language as a way of communicating the patient’s meaningful inner life to himself and to others, the patient is then able to undertake a more traditional form of verbal psychotherapy. The book presents detailed case histories of patients who have benefited from this method, highlighting the specific techniques used and the psychological improvements that followed. The approach presented here complements medication-based treatments that have only had partial success, as well as other psychological approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, family therapy and social skills training. Psychotherapy for People Diagnosed with Schizophrenia will be a valuable text for clinicians working with people suffering from psychosis, including psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, psychologists, physicians and social workers. It will also be of great interest to academics and students.

Book Synopsis A Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia: Direct Analysis by : Albert E. Scheflen
Download or read book A Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia: Direct Analysis written by Albert E. Scheflen and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book on Direct Analysis is a first attempt to determine precisely what goes on during this process, and the validity of the many claims, criticisms, theories and myths which have grown up around it. It does not provide a final answer to any questions; but it sheds a clearer light on them than anything that has yet been written, whether by Dr. Rosen or by his critics. It describes clearly and often vividly what actually transpires on the surface, while providing insight into preconscious and unconscious processes as well. At the same time this report clears the air for future objective studies of Rosen's work by dispelling many myths and popular cliches about Rosen and direct analysis, including some illusions about the work which Rosen himself harbors and fosters"--Pref.
