Book Synopsis Psychology, the Motive Powers by : James McCosh
Download or read book Psychology, the Motive Powers written by James McCosh and published by . This book was released on 1887 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this volume, I unfold the characteristics of the motive powers, as they are called the orective, the appetent, the impulsive powers; the feelings, the sentiments, the affections, the heart, as distinguished from the Gnostic, the cognitive, the intellect, the understanding, the reason, the head. These motive powers fall under three heads: the emotions, the conscience, the will. It is not to be understood that these are unconnected with each other, or with the cognitive; emotions contain an idea which is cognitive. The conscience may be regarded as combining characteristics of each of the two grand classes; being cognitive as discerning good and evil, and motive as leading to action; the will has to use the other powers as going on to action. Emotion occupies more room than the other two in this treatise, inasmuch as its operations are more varied, and as the account usually given of it (so it appears to me) is more defective"--Introduction. Book Synopsis A Psychological Perspective on Joy and Emotional Fulfillment by : Chris Meadows
Download or read book A Psychological Perspective on Joy and Emotional Fulfillment written by Chris Meadows and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of psychology, there have been full investigations of discrete emotions (particularly negative ones) and a recent wealth of books on happiness, but few exist on the emotion of joy. This book takes a unique psychological approach to understanding this powerful emotion and provides a framework within which the study of human joy and other related positive fulfillment experiences can fit in a meaningful schema. A key feature of this book is its development of an experiential phenomenology of joy. This phenomenology is based on more than three hundred descriptions of joy experiences recounted by subjects in an empirical study executed by the author. Types of joy experiences are examined, such as excited vs. serene joy, anticipatory vs. completed joy, and affiliative vs. individuated joy. There is no comparable book or work that clarifies the relationship among major positive states with emotional components including satisfaction, happiness, and ecstasy.

Book Synopsis After Darwin: Animals, Emotions, and the Mind by : Angelique Richardson
Download or read book After Darwin: Animals, Emotions, and the Mind written by Angelique Richardson and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-11-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘What is emotion?’ pondered the young Charles Darwin in his notebooks. How were the emotions to be placed in an evolutionary framework? And what light might they shed on human-animal continuities? These were among the questions Darwin explored in his research, assisted both by an acute sense of observation and an extraordinary capacity for fellow feeling, not only with humans but with all animal life. After Darwin: Animals, Emotions, and the Mind explores questions of mind, emotion and the moral sense which Darwin opened up through his research on the physical expression of emotions and the human–animal relation. It also examines the extent to which Darwin’s ideas were taken up by Victorian writers and popular culture, from George Eliot to the Daily News. Bringing together scholars from biology, literature, history, psychology, psychiatry and paediatrics, the volume provides an invaluable reassessment of Darwin’s contribution to a new understanding of the moral sense and emotional life, and considers the urgent scientific and ethical implications of his ideas today.
Book Synopsis From Passions to Emotions by : Thomas Dixon
Download or read book From Passions to Emotions written by Thomas Dixon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is a thriving 'emotions industry' to which philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists are contributing. Yet until two centuries ago 'the emotions' did not exist. In this path-breaking study Thomas Dixon shows how, during the nineteenth century, the emotions came into being as a distinct psychological category, replacing existing categories such as appetites, passions, sentiments and affections. By examining medieval and eighteenth-century theological psychologies and placing Charles Darwin and William James within a broader and more complex nineteenth-century setting, Thomas Dixon argues that this domination by one single descriptive category is not healthy. Overinclusivity of 'the emotions' hampers attempts to argue with any subtlety about the enormous range of mental states and stances of which humans are capable. This book is an important contribution to the debate about emotion and rationality which has preoccupied western thinkers throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and has implications for contemporary debates.
