Book excerpt: This is the first book to analyze how the technology to alter images and rapidly distribute them can be used for propaganda and to support deception operations. In the past, propagandists and those seeking to conduct deception operations used crude methods to alter images of real people, events and objects, which could usually be detected relatively easily. Today, however, computers allow propagandists to create any imaginable image, still or moving, with appropriate accompanying audio. Furthermore, it is becoming extremely difficult to detect that an image has been manipulated, and the Internet, television and global media make it possible to disseminate altered images around the world almost instantaneously. Given that the United States is the sole superpower, few, if any, adversaries will attempt to fight the US military conventionally on the battlefield. Therefore, adversaries will use propaganda and deception, especially altered images, in an attempt to level the battlefield or to win a war against the United States without even having to fight militarily. Propaganda and Information Warfare in the 21st Century will be of great interest to students of information war, propaganda, public diplomacy and security studies in general.

Book excerpt: Is it really possible to invade an enemy's mind and win without a fight? Can you achieve your goals by having others do the dirty work for you? Have you ever wondered why politicians, speakers and performers get everything they want? Are you tired of others always getting the better of you at work or in the rest of your life? Do modern life-hack tips always seem repetitive to you? If you ask yourself these questions, the answer is: The Art of Psychological Warfare. Psychological warfare has existed since the beginning of time. Ancient documents such as The Art of War by Sun Tzu or historical people such as Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Niccolò Machiavelli are examples of people who understood the timelessness of military and psychological strategies. With the progress of time, up to the present day, the art of war has become increasingly subtle and difficult to identify. Since the mid-twentieth century, great advances in our knowledge of the most effective methods of mass communication and persuasion have been visible in a wide range of professional fields, including journalism, marketing, public relations, interrogation and public opinion studies. However, these successes have also had troubling implications: propaganda, subversion, intimidation, disinformation, large-scale lies, deception, counter-insurgency, brainwashing and manipulation of public opinion in which our individual freedom of thought is constantly under attack. This manual provides a cutting-edge distillation of some of the most influential concepts of dark psychology, techniques honed over the centuries by politicians, strategists, speakers, performers and sellers around the world. This manual can be in your hands. But use it with diligence. Here are some areas that you will discover within The Art of Psychological Warfare: - What Sun Tzu and Machiavelli can teach you to destroy your enemies. - How to spot dark personalities and how to defend yourself from their influence. - The psychology of deception, influence and domination. - The art of blackmail and manipulation. - How brainwashing works in sects, organisations and brands. - How political propaganda and media tactics manage to do what they want with the masses. - The art of war applicable to work, relationships and the business world. This book is not a joke. Like it or not, ‘out there’, there will always be people who will try to hurt you or try to use you for their own pleasure or benefit. You are not the only person with access to psychological warfare methods. If you don't already know it, chances are you are a lifelong victim. In this book, the author studies the various forms of psychological warfare, the dark personalities, the key elements of this PsyWar and, most importantly, how we can fight back and win. It is, without doubt, the best gift you can give to yourself. The principles in this book are not hype, they have survived through the ages and will continue long into the future. After reading this book, you will never be the same again.

Book excerpt: Written by the undisputed dean of U.S. denial and deception experts, Practise to Deceive is the most in-depth look at deception as a military strategy. Barton Whaley knew the history of denial and deception across time, disciplines, and culture. He was the foremost authority on the intricacies of denial and deception strategy and tactics. For Whaley, deception was a mind-game, requiring imagination, deep critical thought, a profound understanding of the enemy as well as one's self (a variation of Sun Tzu), and patience and fortitude. This book presents 88 vividly descriptive case studies to serve as a handbook for intelligence and military professionals. In Whaley's analysis, variations in guilefulness between opposing individuals or groups can be crucial in deciding who achieves victory in combat.

Book excerpt: Despite a rich and turbulent history spanning several centuries, malingering continues to be a controversial and neglected clinical condition that has significant implications for medical, social, legal and insurance interests. Estimates of malingering - the wilful, intentional attempt to simulate or exaggerate illness in the pursuit of a consciously desired end - vary greatly, despite the fact that malingering is believed to contribute substantially to fraudulent health care and social welfare costs. There is little consensus about what would constitute a coherent assessment of malingering, and base rates have been difficult to establish. Malingering remains a difficult attribution to make not least since it falls outside the remit of the formal psychiatric classifications. Labelling a person as a malingerer however, has significant medico-legal, personal and economic ramifications for both subject and accuser. Viewed in this way, malingering is not so much illness behavior in search of a disease, as the manifestation of a conflict between personal and social values. The aim of this book is to effect an integration of the different medical, forensic, neuropsychological, legal and social perspectives. The book provides an overview of progress in disparate fields relevant to the subject, including how recent social and neuroscience findings regarding volition, intentional states and theory of mind may have implications for informing detection, management and ultimately its explanation.
