Book excerpt: The 1920 classic on a physically disabled man's self induced experiments in the psychical and metaphysical realms. "This is one of the best of Mr. Hill's works. It is the sort of book to put into the hands of a beginner in psychical studies who would be stimulated thereby to pursue a course of wider reading. Mr. Hill has managed in the compass of a few pages to convey a good idea of the aims and hopes of psychical research…The book in general preserves a remarkable atmosphere of forbearance and moderation. In the first article Mr. Hill deals with the subject of death, and expresses the opinion that only keenly sensitive natures cherish a strong desire for the cessation of individual consciousness. ..In his second article he suggests that if the identity of a 'spirit' can be tested through the communication of details which can be verified, 'we may perhaps feel fairly safe' in accepting descriptions of spiritual surroundings. …..The chapter on psychical research is excellent, and we would recommend students to read the well balanced and shrewd criticism of Christian Science.
