Book Synopsis Carl Jung and Maximus the Confessor on Psychic Development by : G. C. Tympas
Download or read book Carl Jung and Maximus the Confessor on Psychic Development written by G. C. Tympas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what ways does psychological development differ from spiritual development and psychological experience from spiritual experience? Bringing together two disparate theories under a trans-disciplinary framework, G. C. Tympas presents a comparison of Carl Jung’s theory of psychic development and Maximus the Confessor’s model of spiritual progress. An ‘evolutional’ relationship between the ‘psychological’ and the ‘spiritual’ is proposed for a dynamic interpretation of spiritual experience. Carl Jung and Maximus the Confessor on Psychic Development offers a creative synthesis of elements and directions from both theories and further explores: - Jung’s views on religion in a dialogue with Maximus’ concepts - The different directions and goals of Jung’s and Maximus’ models - Jung’s ‘Answer to Job’ in relation to Maximus’ theory of ‘final restoration’. Tympas argues that a synthesis of Jung’s and Maximus’ models comprises a broader trans-disciplinary paradigm of development, which can serve as a pluralistic framework for considering the composite psycho-spiritual development. Constructively combining strands of differing disciplines, this book will appeal to those looking to explore the dialogue between analytical psychology, early Christian theology and Greek philosophy.

Book Synopsis The Dawning of Wisdom by : Raghavan Iyer
Download or read book The Dawning of Wisdom written by Raghavan Iyer and published by Theosophy Trust Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritually penetrating essays in this volume were written for the expressed purpose of shedding the pristine light of universal Theosophy on the path of spiritual self-regeneration in the service of humanity. The Theosophical philosophy is predicated on the ageless truth that divine wisdom exists, and that wise beings exist who dynamically embody it in world history; that sages and seers still grace the globe and continually oversee the spiritual, mental and physical evolution of man and nature. The secret Society of Sages that guides human progress periodically sends forth one of their own to sound afresh the Divine Philosophy and exemplify the spiritual life in all its richness and mystery. Such an enlightened spiritual teacher articulates eternal but forgotten truths in ingenious ways, adopting modes that inspire the mind, release soul perception, and cut through the miasma of an age. The wide-ranging articles in this volume span the spectrum of human thought from the metaphysical to the mystical, the ethical to the psychological, the spiritual to the material. They reveal the fundamental basis of religion, philosophy and science. The assimilation of these essays turns us back upon ourselves and releases that laser-like insight that allows us to increasingly discern the true, the good, and the beautiful in all religious teachings, philosophical musings, and scientific discoveries. When carefully meditated upon and skillfully applied to the realm of self-chosen duties, they purify the mind, cleanse the heart, and uplift the human condition.

Book Synopsis The Apollinarian Christologies by : Timothy John Carter
Download or read book The Apollinarian Christologies written by Timothy John Carter and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The christological writings of Apollinarius of Laodicea and what has been written about them present us with something of a contradiction. The style of Apollinarius' exposition and his intellectual reputation indicate that he taught a clear, logical and systematic doctrine of Christ and on this the commentators tend to agree: 'The brilliance and thoroughgoing logic of Apollinarius' system are undeniable'; 'This was a brilliant and logical system destined to exercise an enormous influence'; '...it stands as a complete and elaborate system of doctrine to which all his writings make their contribution'. Yet when it comes to specifying the precise nature of this doctrine his interpreters, both ancient and modern, offer divergent opinions and strongly disagree with one another. It is this apparent contradiction which first attracted me to re-examine the Apollinarian texts as collected by Hans Lietzmann in his 1904 edition and to reconsider what has been said about them, for it suggests that the interpretative discussion may not be closed since the contradiction would appear to have two possible causes: either the existing interpretations have been variously less than successful at delineating the precise nature of Apollinarian doctrine, or Apollinarius' teaching was, in fact, less clear, logical and systematic than his style and reputation suggests and his interpreters assume."--

Book Synopsis The Secret Doctrine, Volume II. Anthropogenesis by : H. P. Blavatsky

This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 2812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret Doctrine, Volume II. Anthropogenesis H. P. Blavatsky - The Secret Doctrine is the seminal work of the Theosophical Movement and established Blavatsky as one of the most vocal and outspoken advocate of the Wisdom Teachings of the East. Almost every contemporary spiritual movement can trace its lineage back to the impulses expressed most consumately in this, Blavatsky's Magnum Opus. Based upon a disclosure and exposition of the hitherto unknown - and academically, quite controversial - "Stanzas of Dzyan," The Secret Doctrine elaborates on the teachings first brought to the world through the "Masters" Koot Humi and Morya and introduced in A. P. Sinnett's "Esoteric Buddhism," to which Blavatsky continuously refers and clarifies. In the two volumes (the first being Cosmogenesis) she portrays a sweeping vision of the evolution of humanity and the cosmos out of the spirit, unfolding in "rounds" and cycles of descent and reascent from and to the spirit, through cycles of reincarnation. This ebook edition has been meticulously prepared, with over 1000 footnotes linked from within the text. This complex and challenging work is presented in a highly readable format that invites a fresh approach to the text. Volume I, Cosmogenesis

Book Synopsis Restraining Rage by : William V. Harris
Download or read book Restraining Rage written by William V. Harris and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The angry emotions, and the problems they presented, were an ancient Greek preoccupation from Homer to late antiquity. From the first lines of the Iliad to the church fathers of the fourth century A.D., the control or elimination of rage was an obsessive concern. From the Greek world it passed to the Romans. Drawing on a wide range of ancient texts, and on recent work in anthropology and psychology, Restraining Rage explains the rise and persistence of this concern. W. V. Harris shows that the discourse of anger-control was of crucial importance in several different spheres, in politics--both republican and monarchical--in the family, and in the slave economy. He suggests that it played a special role in maintaining male domination over women. He explores the working out of these themes in Attic tragedy, in the great Greek historians, in Aristotle and the Hellenistic philosophers, and in many other kinds of texts. From the time of Plato onward, educated Greeks developed a strong conscious interest in their own psychic health. Emotional control was part of this. Harris offers a new theory to explain this interest, and a history of the anger-therapy that derived from it. He ends by suggesting some contemporary lessons that can be drawn from the Greek and Roman experience.
