Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unruly Spirits connects the study of séances, telepathy, telekinesis, materializations, and other parapsychic phenomena in France during the age of Sigmund Freud to an epistemological crisis that would eventually yield the French adoption of psychoanalysis. Skillfully navigating experiments conducted by nineteenth-century French psychical researchers and the wide-ranging debates that surrounded their work, M. Brady Brower situates the institutional development of psychical research at the intersection of popular faith and the emergent discipline of psychology. Brower shows how spiritualist mediums were ignored by French academic scientists for nearly three decades. Only after the ideologues of the Third Republic turned to science to address what they took to be the excess of popular democracy would the marvels of mediumism begin to emerge as legitimate objects of scientific inquiry. Taken up by the most prominent physicists, physiologists, and psychologists of the last decades of the nineteenth century, psychical research would eventually stall in the 1920s as researchers struggled to come to terms with interpersonal phenomena (such as trust and good faith) that could not be measured within the framework of their experimental methods. In characterizing psychical research as something other than a mere echo of popular spirituality or an anomaly among the sciences, Brower argues that the questions surrounding mediums served to sustain the scientific project by forestalling the establishment of a closed and complete system of knowledge. By acknowledging persistent doubt about the intentions of its participants, psychical research would result in the realization of a subjectivity that was essentially indeterminate and would thus clear the way for the French reception of psychoanalysis and the Freudian unconscious and its more comprehensive account of subjective uncertainty.

Book excerpt: A mindfulness expert whose work has been hailed by Eckhart Tolle as “an important contribution to the shift in consciousness” offers a new vision of reality—one that is compatible with modern science and ancient spirituality. “With elegance and lucidity, Steve Taylor explains why spiritual science is the only hope for humanity.” —Deepak Chopra It is often assumed that there are two ways of interpreting the world: a rational scientific way, or an irrational religious way. Mindfulness expert, Steve Taylor, shows that there is a third possibility—a spiritual, or “panspiritist”, view of reality that transcends both conventional science and religion, recognizes spirit or consciousness as fundamental, and answers many of the riddles that neither can explain. Here, Taylor puts forward the evidence for a spiritual view of reality and examines the development and consequences of the materialist model. Drawing on the insights of philosophers, physicists, mystics, as well as spiritual traditions and indigenous cultures, he also systematically shows how a ‘panspiritist’ view can explain many puzzling aspects of science and the world such as: • human consciousness • altruism • near-death experiences • telepathy and pre-cognition • quantum physics • the placebo effect • neuroplasticity A compelling argument for a new vision of reality, Spiritual Science offers a bright vision of the world as sacred and interconnected, and of human life as meaningful and purposeful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Séances, clairvoyance, and telepathy captivated public imagination in the United States from the 1850s well into the twentieth century. Though skeptics dismissed these experiences as delusions, a new kind of investigator emerged to seek the science behind such phenomena. With new technologies like the telegraph collapsing the boundaries of time and space, an explanation seemed within reach. As Americans took up psychical experiments in their homes, the boundaries of the mind began to waver. Common Phantoms brings these experiments back to life while modeling a new approach to the history of psychology and the mind sciences. Drawing on previously untapped archives of participant-reported data, Alicia Puglionesi recounts how an eclectic group of investigators tried to capture the most elusive dimensions of human consciousness. A vast though flawed experiment in democratic science, psychical research gave participants valuable tools with which to study their experiences on their own terms. Academic psychology would ultimately disown this effort as both a scientific failure and a remnant of magical thinking, but its challenge to the limits of science, the mind, and the soul still reverberates today.

Book excerpt: An esteemed scientist's personal journey from skepticism to wonder and awe provides astonishing answers to a timeless question: Is there life after death? Are love and life eternal? This exciting account presents provocative evidence that could upset everything that science has ever taught. Daring to risk his worldwide academic reputation, Dr. Gary E. Schwartz, along with his research partner Dr. Linda Russek, asked some of the most prominent mediums in America -- including John Edward, Suzane Northrup, and George Anderson -- to become part of a series of extraordinary experiments to prove, or disprove, the existence of an afterlife. THE AFTERLIFE EXPERIMENTS This riveting narrative, with its electrifying transcripts, puts the reader on the scene of a breakthrough scientific achievement: contact with the beyond under controlled laboratory conditions. In stringently monitored experiments, leading mediums attempted to contact dead friends and relatives of "sitters" who were masked from view and never spoke, depriving the mediums of any cues. The messages that came through stunned sitters and researchers alike. Here, as they unfolded in the laboratory setting, are uncanny revelations about a son's suicide, what a deceased father wanted to say about his last days in a coma, the transformation of a man's lifelong doubts about the afterlife, and, most amazing of all, a forecast of a beloved spouse's death. Dr. Schwartz was forced by the overwhelmingly positive data to abandon his skepticism, reaching some startling conclusions. Compelling from the first page to the last, The Afterlife Experiments is the amazing documentation of groundbreaking experiments you will never forget.

Bennett's accounts of communication with supernatural spirits draw on decades of research and practice. This edition includes his original illustrations adapted from the sketches of mediums and psychics. The author was fascinated by the spiritualist movement and the popular phenomena of seances, wherein a talented medium attempts to communicate with spirits in the presence of others. This book contains select accounts of the most famous incidents involving mediums and apparent manifestations of spiritual forces - these supernatural events were numerous, and Bennett aims to recap the best of them. The ability to encourage spirits to move objects, produce noise, or manifest as visual apparitions was considered a profound gift - the most talented spiritual mediums would frequently offer their services to the public in the late 19th century. Other related phenomena, such as the growth in spirit photography, and the ability of mediums to sketch drawings or messages from spirits while in the midst of a clairvoyant trance, are discussed. Professionally, Bennett worked as a botanist. Active in the spiritualist movement, he was one of the foremost researchers of the British National Association of Spiritualists. Whether readers interested in receiving messages from the spiritual realms beyond our own, or simply want to gain an impression of the history of these occurrences, Bennett's Psychic Phenomena is a fine resource.

Book excerpt: Introduction"Psychologists" are involved in all psychic phenomena. If there are no psychics, the "spiritual phenomenon" will not occur. If the leading role on the spirit side of the spiritual phenomenon production is spirits, the leading role on the ground side is the psychic. The existence of psychics has been well known for a long time, but much of the reality is wrapped in a mysterious veil. Humans with "spiritual abilities" are "spiriters", but until now there has been no discussion of spiritual abilities and psychics from the perspective of spiritual facts, and no clarification of their truth. Of course, there have been explanations of spiritual abilities and psychics from the standpoint of religion, spirituality, and mysticism, but they are only a part of the whole, and the content is spiritual. It was just a big departure from the facts. In the light of the "spiritual truth" revealed by spiritualism, the conventional perception of humankind regarding spiritual abilities and psychics is too poor. There has never been anything in the earth that preached the truth about "spiritual ability", so people regard "spiriters" as being superhuman beings who are close to God and different from ordinary people, and specialize more than necessary. It was decided. Priests have a certain charisma and sometimes have reigned power and ruled people as religious guru.Priests have often committed injustices that trick the public into "spiritual ignorance" of the general public. Originally, spiritual abilities are sacred by God, and psychics have special missions and responsibilities. But unfortunately many psychics have been fraudulent. Such "fake psychics" fraud and scams exist not only in the past, but also today. Now, if you go to a bookstore, there is always a psychic book corner where books by psychics and channelers are lined up. A psychic book that is frivolous for publishers is a great way to earn copies. While the entire publishing industry is in recession, psychics have become an integral part of publishers. The situation is the same for TV stations, and each station competes to plan a spiritual program and make a false psychic appear in order to quickly gain viewership. The "goldenism" of such publishers and television stations and the "fame greed" of psychics match, and a vulgar spiritual boom that should not occur will be triggered.Spiritualism has taken a tough stance against criminals' injustices and vulgar spirits. They have accused and alerted fake psychics who deceive people as "enemy of mankind". Spiritualism not only reveals the mechanism of psychic phenomena, but also shows unprecedented knowledge about spiritual abilities and psychics. It has brought "spiritual knowledge" to mankind that could never be known by traditional religion, mysticism and philosophy. That spiritual knowledge has made it possible for everyone on Earth to have a correct understanding of "spiriters" and at the same time have the right judgment. In this 5th part, spiritual phenomenology of spiritualism "spiritual abilities and psychics", we introduce spiritual knowledge about psychic abilities and psychics first revealed by spiritualism. It exposes the reality of the false wickedness's wrongdoing to the sun and exiles the false psychic from the ground.

Book excerpt: • Shares data and meta-analysis from a large volume of extremely sophisticated experiments that provide proof for the existence of psi phenomena • Explores evidence of past lives, intuitive knowing, and other spiritual phenomena • Reveals the author’s own inexplicable experiences as well as her conversations with scientific colleagues, high-level experts, and government officials Fully indoctrinated into the cult of science, neuroscientist Mona Sobhani, Ph.D., aggressively defended the dogma of scientific beliefs--until a series of life-altering events caused her to reconsider spirituality and psi concepts and launched her into a two-year investigation into the ineffable mysteries of our world. Sharing the extensive research she discovered on past lives, karma, and the complex interactions of mind and matter, the author details her transformation from diehard materialist to open-minded spiritual seeker. She reveals her conversations about spirituality and anomalous occurrences with scientific colleagues as well as high-level experts and government officials who shared data on extremely sophisticated experiments that provided proof for the existence of psi phenomena. She discovered that psi research has been conducted on a grand scale for more than a century--by hundreds of scientists with hundreds of thousands of participants--and that there exists substantial evidence for the reality of psi. She examines meta-analysis of these experiments, such as that of the Ganzfield tests, which showed odds against chance of 12 billion to 1--throwing our current scientific materialist paradigm into question. Providing a deep dive into the literature of psychology, quantum physics, neuroscience, philosophy, and esoteric texts, Sobhani also explores the relationship between psi phenomena, the transcendence of space and time, and spirituality. Culminating with the author’s serious reckoning with one of the foundational principles of neuroscience--scientific materialism--this illuminating book shows that the mysteries of human experience go far beyond what the present scientific paradigm can comprehend.
