Book Synopsis Human Nature and Suffering by : Paul Gilbert
Download or read book Human Nature and Suffering written by Paul Gilbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Nature and Suffering is a profound comment on the human condition, from the perspective of evolutionary psychology. Paul Gilbert explores the implications of humans as evolved social animals, suggesting that evolution has given rise to a varied set of social competencies, which form the basis of our personal knowledge and understanding. Gilbert shows how our primitive competencies become modified by experience - both satisfactorily and unsatisfactorily. He highlights how cultural factors may modify and activate many of these primitive competencies, leading to pathology proneness and behaviours that are collectively survival threatening. These varied themes are brought together to indicate how the social construction of self arises from the organization of knowledge encoded within the competencies. This Classic Edition features a new introduction from the author, bringing Gilbert's early work to a new audience. The book will be of interest to clinicians, researchers and historians in the field of psychology.

Book Synopsis Psychoanalysis and Cognitive Science by : Wilma Bucci
Download or read book Psychoanalysis and Cognitive Science written by Wilma Bucci and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1997-05-16 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although psychoanalytic concepts underlie most forms of psychotherapy practiced today, the basic Freudian theory of mind the metapsychology does not mesh with current scientific views in psychology and related fields. As a result, despite its many strengths, psychoanalysis has been relegated to the periphery by clinicians and researchers alike. Filling a significant void, this book from cognitive scientist and psychoanalytic researcher Wilma Bucci proposes a new model of psychological organization that integrates psychoanalytic theory with the investigation of mental processes. Solidly rooted in current cognitive science, multiple code theory recognizes the focus on meanings and motives that is intrinsic to psychoanalytic clinical work. The theory points to parallel functions underlying free association and dreams, as well as conceptual development in children and creative work in sciences and the arts, and provides a strong foundation for empirical research on the psychoanalytic treatment process.
Book Synopsis Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder by : American Psychiatric Association
Download or read book Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder written by American Psychiatric Association and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2001 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common personality disorder here and abroad, borderline personality disorder is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Left untreated, it causes marked distress and impairment in social, occupational, and role functioning, with high rates of self-destructive behavior (attempted and completed suicide). Its pervasive pattern of impulsivity and instability of interpersonal relationships, affects, and self-image begins in early adulthood and presents in a variety of contexts. Developed primarily by psychiatrists in active clinical practice, the revised edition of this popular work offers an updated synthesis of current scientific knowledge and rational clinical practice for patients with borderline personality disorder--with the important caveat that clinicians should consider, but not limit themselves to, the treatments recommended here. The summary of treatment recommendations is keyed according to the level of confidence with which each recommendation is made and coded to show the nature of its supporting evidence. Highly informative and easy to use, this eminently practical volume is organized into three major parts: Part A contains treatment recommendations (Section I, treatment summaries; Section II, treatment plans; Section III, special clinical considerations; and Section IV, risk management issues during treatment), Part B presents the evidence underlying these treatment recommendations (Section V, an overview of DSM-IV-TR criteria, prevalence rates, and natural history and course; and Section VI, a review of existing treatment literature), and Part C summarizes those areas in which better research data are needed. Remarkably concise and comprehensive, this practice guideline continues to be an indispensable reference for every clinician who treats patients with this heterogeneous and complex disorder.
Book Synopsis The Myth of the Other by : Franco Rella
Download or read book The Myth of the Other written by Franco Rella and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rella came of age as a philosopher in Italy during the period of the "crisis of reason" or more generally the exhaustion of classical rationality in its authority to structure experience. For Rella, unlike many others, the tensions of the crisis are productive. In The Myth of the Other, he presents a unique perspective on four seminal French thinkers: Lacan, Foucault, Deleuze, and Bataille. Moe's masterful translation brings this remarkable Italian thinker to American readers for the first time. This slim book mayvery well change the way American scholars think about the crisis of the other and the self coming our of French poststructuralism.

Book Synopsis Biographical Ruptures and Their Repair by : Amrei C. Joerchel
Download or read book Biographical Ruptures and Their Repair written by Amrei C. Joerchel and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biographical ruptures and their repairs: Cultural transitions in development represents the efforts of bridging theoretical, methodological, and practice oriented issues revolving around the notion of biographical ruptures and their repairs. The aim is to bring novel understandings from cultural psychological perspectives to the debate of what it means to be a developing human being in an ever changing world. Contrary to mainstream psychology ruptures and repairs are here not necessarily understood as a personal experience, which must be overcome through various coping strategies. Rather, ruptures are understood as experiences, which necessarily emerge out of the complex interrelatedness of intra-psychological, inter-personal, and societal processes. Moving along these different levels of analysis, each of the 13 chapters of this book contributes to the general cultural psychological understanding of ruptures from their own particular standpoint. The notion of ruptures and their repairs are discussed from such differing standpoints such as classical developmental psychological theories and challenges to such developmental approaches. They are discussed in relation to racial interpellations using the documentary method and social representations theory. On the object level ruptures are pointed out within popular music videos and from a Ganzheitspsychological approach and others. The current book thus does not only represent a conglomerate of various theoretical, methodological, or practice oriented approaches to ruptures and their repairs, each adding with their own expertise to a better understand of the phenomenon in its whole. It also demonstrated a lively debate between leading specialists and practitioners from different disciplines and countries. Theoretical and methodological issues, as well as ethical and moral ones, are each discussed from their own cultural psychological viewpoint. This book will interest practitioners, scientists and students or anyone who is interested in biographical rupture and their repairs from a cultural psychological, developmental, social psychological or psychotherapeutic viewpoint.
Download or read book Well-Being Therapy written by G.A. Fava and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-Being Therapy (WBT) is the psychotherapeutic approach developed by Giovanni Fava, a world-renowned psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and the editor-in-chief of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. WBT is an innovative strategy that is based on monitoring psychological well-being, whereby the patient progressively learns how to make it grow. This type of therapy has enjoyed much success and is increasing in popularity around the world. The first part of this long-awaited book describes how the idea for WBT was formed, the first patient treated, and the current evidence that supports this approach. In Part II, Giovanni Fava provides the treatment manual of WBT, describing what each session entails, and includes many examples from his own cases. The last part covers some of the specific conditions for which WBT can be used and how sessions can be conducted. It includes sections on depression, mood swings, generalized anxiety disorder, panic and agoraphobia, and posttraumatic stress disorder. There is also information on the application of WBT in interventions in school settings. Throughout the book, Dr. Fava keeps things interesting by peppering his narrative with anecdotes from his medical career. The primary audience for this book is professionals within psychology, psychiatry, and other fields of medicine (e.g., family practice, pediatrics, and rehabilitation). However, the book is written in a relaxed, clear, and accessible style that also makes it of interest to counselors, educators, and family and friends of patients, not to mention patients themselves.

Book Synopsis From Pain to Violence by : Felicity de Zulueta
Download or read book From Pain to Violence written by Felicity de Zulueta and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence is all around us; yet, despite its widespread prevalence, we remain unclear about its causes. In this book Felicity de Zulueta - begins by defining "violence" as distinct from "aggression", and then attempts to trace its origins, highlighting the polarization between those who believe mankind to be innately violent and those who see violence as the outcome of man's life experiences. As a result of her investigations, the author suggests that the current high level of violence may well be linked to the effects of childhood and adult trauma which appear to be far more widespread than has hitherto been acknowledged. These findings are relevant to understanding why "normal" people can become violent in certain conditions. This is a second edition and has been fully updated. A new chapter on terrorism has been added.
