Book Synopsis Psychological Knowledge and Practices in Brazilian Colonial Culture by : Marina Massimi
Download or read book Psychological Knowledge and Practices in Brazilian Colonial Culture written by Marina Massimi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complexities of the colonization of the territory that is now Brazil and its shaping of psychological knowledge and practice. It reveals the rich network of cultural practices that were formed through the appropriation of elements of Jesuit Catholicism and the blending with elements of the cultures of native, African and Lusitanian populations present in the territory, and how psychological concepts and practices emerged and circulated between the sixteenth and the late eighteenth centuries, long before the establishment of psychology as a modern science. The volume summarizes the research program developed by the author over 38 years of academic activity through which she contributed to expand the field of historical studies in psychology by investigating how psychological concepts and practices were produced in cultural and historical contexts different from the European and North American societies where scientific psychology developed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Psychological Knowledge and Practices in Brazilian Colonial Culture will be of interest not only to historians of psychology, but also to professional psychologists working with culturally diverse populations who seek to understand how psychological concepts and phenomena are shaped by culture. By doing so, the book intends to contribute to the development of a psychology better prepared to deal with cultural diversity in an increasingly multicultural world. “Massimi’s book will now form an important foundation of English-language scholarship about the psychological and cultural impact of colonization on subjugated peoples. She has, of course, made many such contributions in Portuguese. It is to be hoped that much of her work will be translated into English so that more scholars may benefit from the richness of her insights.” – Excerpt from the Foreword by Dr. Wade E. Pickren.

Book Synopsis Aristotle in Coimbra by : Cristiano Casalini
Download or read book Aristotle in Coimbra written by Cristiano Casalini and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle in Coimbra is the first book to cover the history of both the College of Arts in Coimbra and its most remarkable cultural product, the Cursus Conimbricensis, examining early Jesuit pedagogy as performed in one of the most important colleges run by the Society of Jesus in the sixteenth century. The first complete philosophical textbook published by a Jesuit college, the Cursus Conimbricensis (1592–1606) was created by some of the most renowned early Jesuit philosophers and comprised seven volumes of commentaries and disputations on Aristotle’s writings, which had formed the foundation of the university philosophy curriculum since the Middle Ages. In Aristotle in Coimbra, Cristiano Casalini demonstrates the connection between educational practices in a sixteenth-century college and the structure of a scholastic philosophical commentary, providing insight into this particular form of late-scholastic Aristotelianism through historiographical discourse. This book provides both a narrative of the historical background behind the publication of the Cursus and an analysis of the major philosophical and educational issues addressed by its seven volumes. It is valuable reading for all those interested in intellectual history, the history of education and the history of philosophy.

Book Synopsis Towards the True Law by : Felipe de Jesús Fierro Alvídrez
Download or read book Towards the True Law written by Felipe de Jesús Fierro Alvídrez and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Law exist? and if so, what is it? Can we know it? This book tries to answer these questions by approaching as a whole the problem of Law, its justification and demonstration. Because when facing multiple legal theories, many of which are contradictory, we have to ask ourselves what the true Law is, if it exists indeed, its origin, meaning and perspective. We are in pursuit of something more: the Law and its truth. This fundamental question must be scientifically solved, and in such an in-depth approach that only philosophy, traditionally understood as "knowledge by its first and principle causes, obtained under the natural light of reason," can give us the answer. the current thesis takes up the problem of knowledge and its theories of being and truth, to later contrast them with various juridical currents. Two different paths, processes and objects to reach the same conclusion. the result wasn't easy, but we believe we contributed with a juridical theory with seven rules of truthfulness, that from our humble point of view, solves the conflict over Law, its essence and properties. What is Right? What is Law? Does a juridical science exist? Does a true theory of Law exist or does each one of us have their own truth? These were the central questions we tried to answer in the current thesis; to demonstrate through reason the considerations raised here and to somehow contribute in a positive way to the growing relativism of this subject.

Book Synopsis La Compagnie de Jésus des anciens régimes au monde contemporain (XVIIIe-XXe siècles ) by : Pierre-Antoine Fabre
Download or read book La Compagnie de Jésus des anciens régimes au monde contemporain (XVIIIe-XXe siècles ) written by Pierre-Antoine Fabre and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''La Compagnie de Jésus des Anciens Régimes au monde contemporain presents thirty-seven essays on the modern history of the Society of Jesus, spanning the eighteenth- to the twentieth centuries. The essays are multilingual, multidisciplinary and range across a wide chronological, geographical and thematic landscape within the field of modern history, while the papal Suppression (1773) and Restoration (1814) of the worldwide Society provide the volume’s main orientation. Until recently, modern Jesuit history has received relatively limited scholarly attention. This volume aims to guide researchers in the period’s riches and situate the Society in modern historical studies more broadly. A novelty of the volume is that it brings together the later history of the “Old Society”, the interim period of the Suppression (1773–1814), and the “New Society” (from the Restoration). Its broad frame provides a window onto the great ruptures of European history, the main events of modern Catholic history, and early globalization. While the well-known upheavals of this period come into view, the persistent continuities of these centuries also emerge, exemplified most potently by the Society’s own partial survival during the forty-one years of its papal suppression.''--
