Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While acknowledging their major debt to Europeans like Freud, Piaget, Erickson, Lewin, and Jung, American psychologists generally concentrated on developments in American psychology. And this tendency prevails in spite of the fact that innovations—in sport psychology and clinical neuropsychology, for example—have continued to come from abroad. International Psychology is a much-needed exposition of the state of psychology in forty-five countries, including the Soviet Union and the United States. Emphasizing the period from 1960 to the present, and surveying the training, research, and practice of psychologists on six continents, this volume introduces a widely dispersed network of occupational kinfolk, many of whom have scant knowledge of one another. The editors provide a panoramic view in the opening chapter, as well as an epilogue and name and subject indexes. The contributors, nearly all distinguished psychologists in their countries, represent Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, the German Democratic Republic, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, and Zimbabwe.

Book excerpt: The volume describes a virtual tour of the cities in which Franz Brentano and his pupils worked and lived, with a reconstruction of the intellectual climate of their time. After the Introduction, the intellectual life of Würzburg, Munich, Vienna, Prag, Lvov, Warsaw, Cambridge, Florence and Milan is presented and analyzed. The papers collected in this volume propose several answers to the following question: to what do we refer when we speak of Central European philosophy?. Interpretations of Central European philosophy have developed in at least two broad directions. An interpretation fashionable during the 1970s lumps specific philosophical achievements, especially those of Mach and Wittgenstein, characterized by research into and development of new languages, of new philosophical, scientific and artistic grammars. In this situation, literature was seen as the exploration of meanings moving towards frontiers in which reality and possibility, science and metaphor, meet and merge. On the other hands, the theme of a Central European philosophy, connected with but independent of literature, has recently been given more thorough development. The two outstanding figures to have emerged from this inquiry are those of Bernard Bolzano and Franz Brentano. With reference to Brentano in particular, it is almost as if the collapse of the Empire also erased awareness of the common origin of many diverse components of Central European philosophical and scientific thought. The Polish logical school, logical neopositivism, phenomenology, the Prague school of linguistics, analytic philosophy, Gestalt psychology, the Vienna economics school - as well as a number of individual thinkers - are all movements and groups connected in some manner with Brentano's work and teaching. Although in some respects these are movements still at the centre of interest, the overall effect, the pattern of their common and unifying aspects have been neglected if they have not entirely disappeared. It seems that the unity of this philosophical tradition was lost with the end of the geographical and political unity of the Danubian empire and with the events that accompanied its downfall. After 1918 the centres of that tradition - Vienna, Prague, Lvov, Graz - belonged to different states, and its rich network of exchanges, contacts and relationships was dismantled forever. However, there still remained something of its philosophical style in each individual school; traits which enable us to speak, as the Authors have done in this volume, of Central European philosophy.

The book seeks to answer questions from a wide range of academic disciplines and traces the portrait of women tied to organized crime in Italy and around the world. The book offers up accounts of mafia women, and also tales of severe abuse and violence against women.

Book excerpt: The science and practice of psychology has evolved around the world on different trajectories and timelines, yet with a convergence on the recognition of the need for a human science that can confront the challenges facing the world today. Few would argue that the standard narrative of the history of psychology has emphasized European and American traditions over others, but in today's global culture, there is a greater need in psychology for international understanding. This volume describes the historical development of psychology in countries throughout the world. Contributors provide narratives that examine the political and socioeconomic forces that have shaped their nations' psychologies. Each unique story adds another element to our understanding of the history of psychology. The chapters in this volume remind us that there are unique contexts and circumstances that influence the ways in which the science and practice of psychology are assimilated into our daily lives. Making these contexts and circumstances explicit through historical research and writing provides some promise of greater international insight, as well as a better understanding of the human condition.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the rapidly expanding field of environmental psychology. The authors start with a review of the history of environmental psychology, highlighting its interdisciplinary nature. They trace its roots in architecture, ecology and geography, and examine the continuing relationship of these subjects to the psychological tradition. The book then moves through key contemporary lines of research in the field, contrasting models from perception and cognition, such as those of Gibson and Brunswick, with major social psychological approaches as represented by Lewin, Barker and others. The book concludes with an analysis of the most promising areas of research and practice.

Book excerpt: This edited collection highlights the diversity of perspectives within the broad field of intercultural education, focusing on education in modern multicultural societies, as well as exploring the role of migrant populations as modern citizens. The chapters examine these themes both through historical analysis, tracing the pathway of intercultural education back to ancient Greece, before focussing on modern multicultural societies. It also discusses intercultural learning issues in multicultural contexts, dynamic approaches and practical applications in modern classrooms and the main issues in teacher training in relation to immigrant students. The volume highlights the need to design more effective social and educational policies for immigrant populations, on the basis of respecting, protecting and supporting all social groups, irrelevant of their country of origin, racial or ethnic background, sexual orientation, socio-economic class or religious beliefs. It brings together conceptual and empirical contributions from well-known authors in the field as well as from younger scholars and researchers. The result is a mixture of ideas that will provide food for thought and discussion to an international readership. This book was originally published as a special issue of Intercultural Education.
