Book excerpt: The name of St. Jerome is connected with three versions of the Psalter. Two of these -- generally known as the Roman and the Gallican -- were revisions made by him of the Old Latin Psalter previously in use. In these two revisions St. Jerome had recourse, not to the Hebrew, but to the Greek of the Septuagint. His third version, which was made at the end of the fourth century, was a translation from the Hebrew original. Hence its usual name, the Hebrew Psalter. The more I have studied the Psalter the more I have been convinced that the text translated by St. Jerome at the end of the fourth century was substantially the same as our present Masoretic text. For this reason I have always been inclined to admit a reading which agreed with that text. Also I have learned to view with suspicion any reading which was simply a reproduction of the corresponding word or words of the Gallican version. - Introduction.

His research combines textual criticism, translation technique, discourse pragmatics, and the study of politeness in language. A systematic and comprehensive investigation of the evidence shows that the pragmatic function of this particle is strongly conditioned by the context and cannot be explained by a simple unified denominator. Hence an approach applying a differentiation of various discourse levels proves oneself to be very helpful for the interpretation of this complex particle. This book contains eight studies by the distinguished Irish biblical scholar, Martin McNamara, which he has published over the past twenty-five years, on the Latin biblical texts (Vulgate, Gallicanum and Jerome's Hebraicum) of the Psalter and commentaries on it in Ireland from 600 CE onwards. The oldest Irish Vulgate text, the Cathach of St Columba of Iona (died 597), shows signs of correction against the Irish recension of the Hebrew text. The central exegetical tradition is strongly Antiochene, being dependent on the commentary of Theodore of Mopsuestia (in Julian's translation), while another branch understands the Psalms as principally about David, rather than christologically or as about later Jewish history.
