Book excerpt: This definitive edition of "Reb Zalman's" Psalms in a Translation for Praying is a contemporary translation like no other. It has been written and refined over a lifetime for all --Jewish, Christian, and unaffiliated--who wish to use the Psalms as a conduit for their conversation with God. In the Preface, Reb Zalman writes: There are many translations of the Psalms available. Why bother to translate them again, and in this manner? In my work with liturgy, I found that when a version was overly faithful to the Hebrew, it was good for studying. If it was sonorous and high sounding, it was good for ceremony and high ritual. But to render the Psalms as personal prayers, a more direct and more heart-connected version would be better. Since my affiliation with Hassidism, I have recited Psalms as prayers-at times for intercession for others, and at times because I needed to pour out my heart to the Living God. I have not translated all of the 150 Psalms; in particular, I omitted those that troubled me with their demands for revenge. I can understand-even feel-the hurt, anger and frustration of parents whose children were brutally killed by the Babylonians-and others. But, at times when our children are attacked on a school bus, I don't want to recite those Psalms without some way of expressing the pain differently. In others that I did translate, I altered the sense, shifting from focus on sinners to focus on sin. Here, I did not try to smooth over the vindictive passages. Better to tell them to God and let Him/Her be the God of Vengeance, than for us to take retaliation in our own hands. We need to open our heart to God, and if in the heart is pain-well, that, also, is what the Psalms are made to express. The Hebrew words are very elastic for one who prays and meditates on them. They accommodate not only the simple manifest meaning of the p'shat/literal words, but also meaning in deeper and higher layers of significance. At times I have changed the sentence order to fit the deeper meaning. In particular, often the "enemies" are not on the outside. Those who have wrestled with recalcitrant habits and addictions know that in their own guts. Those who have chafed under abusive bosses and family members need to have a caring friend who hears our sighs and offers compassion- Whom have I in Heaven but You and besides You I do not yearn for anyone on earth. Yet I am still with You, You have held onto my right hand. In reproving and supporting me, You comfort me. The range of human experience that the Psalms give expression to is the glory of this book. What the Five Books of Moses demand of us, the five books of the Psalms help us to deliver.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost three thousand years, people have prayed and sung the Psalms. Like those who have gone before us, when we are filled with joy, we will discover fuel in these ancient songs for even higher praises. And when we are going through the valley of deepest darkness, we will find in the Psalms light shining upon us, driving the shadows of doubt away. Prayers on Fire includes 365 prayers inspired by the book of Psalms from the heart-felt Passion Translation. Each day contains an excerpt from the Psalms and then a prayer from the heart, providing an expression of faith and worship for sincere worshipers. Open your heart as you open the pages of this book. Here you will find God as your shelter of strength. “As I’m hidden within your greatness, I discover your eternal purposes. In love and humility I bow before you, my awe-inspiring God. The way you watch over me, infuses me with confidence and courage. You are my source; I draw life from the waters of your love. Walking step by step with you brings me joy unlike I’ve ever known. Your Word illuminates my path, and wherever I go, I flourish. No matter the season, I’m blessed—established firmly in you.” (Inspired by Psalm 1:2)

Book excerpt: "I hope that as you start praying the Psalms, you will feel His presence in all the things that you do and you will feel His guidance through both storms and long periods of waiting. I hope that you will see God as your life and breath instead of as your religion." The Psalms are among the most beautiful poems ever written, but sometimes they feel very far from us and our daily struggles and goals. In Psalms for Trials: Meditations on Praying the Psalms by Lindsey Tollefson, we see that the Psalms are not just pious words for the religious, but they are meant to be our prayers for every trial we face, just as they have been a comfort for generations of Christians before us, including King David and the Lord Jesus. The Psalms allow us to pour ourselves out in prayer to God and to receive the comfort that comes from the promises found in His Word. This book includes forty-four bite-sized reflections on the Psalms, each ending with concrete recommendations on how to use the Psalms in your prayers and more importantly, how to live them out. After you have read this book, your prayers will never be the same again.

Book excerpt: Sheltering Mercy helps us rediscover the rich treasures of the Psalms--through free-verse prayer renderings of their poems and hymns--as a guide to personal devotion and meditation. The church has always used the Psalms as part of its prayer life, and they have inspired countless other prayers. This book contains 75 prayers drawn from Psalms 1-75, providing lyrical sketches of what authors Ryan Smith and Dan Wilt have seen, heard, and felt while sojourning in the Psalms. While each prayer corresponds to a particular psalm and touches on its themes and ideas, it is not a new translation of the Psalms or an attempt to modernize or contextualize their content or language. Rather, the prayers are responses to the Psalms written in harmony with Scripture. These prayers help us quiet our hearts before God and welcome us into a safe place amid the storms of life. This artful, poetic, and classic devotional book features compelling custom illustrations and beautiful hardcover binding, offering a fresh way to reflect on and pray the Psalms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoroughly revised edition of a classic in spirituality, Walter Brueggemann guides the reader into a thoughtful and moving encounter with the Psalms. This new edition includes a revised text, new notes, and new bibliography. "The movement and meeting of God with us is indeed a speech-event in which new humanness is evoked among us. Being attentive to language means cultivating the candid imagination to bring our own experience to the Psalms and permitting it to be disciplined by the speech of the Psalms. And, conversely, it means letting the Psalms address us and having that language reshape our sensitivities and fill our minds with new pictures and images that may redirect our lives." --from Chapter 3 "I am so glad to see this second edition of Praying the Psalms. In it Walter Brueggemann reveals the ways in which the Psalms teach the mother tongue of biblical speech by inviting us to the risk of daring candor with God.The contemporary church in North America regularly suffers collective amnesia in the face of the languages of techno-speak, market share and sentimental cliche that shape the world we inhabit. Praying the Psalms offers a surprising antidote to this chronic forgetfulness. It invites us to recover our ancient memory and true identity by learning again to pray the Psalms. I know of no better book for introducing a congregation to the Psalms than this one." --Edwin Searcy, Pastor, University Hill Congregation, United Church of Canada, Vancouver, BC "'The Psalms just don't speak to me.' Anyone who has ever felt this way should read Brueggemann's book. . . . He shows how these ancient prayers can lead us from the disorientation of our chaotic lives into a reorientation of transformation. His treatment of both the post-Holocaust Christian use of these very Jewish prayers and the troublesome call for vengeance is most timely. This book shows how the Psalms can indeed speak to us." --Dianne Bergant, CSA author of Preaching the New Lectionary ." . . Brueggemann pushes me and other readers to recognize the full gamut of passions reflected in the Psalms: joy and exultation but also disappointment, sorrow, anger, resentment, even the desire for vengeance. . . . I am grateful to Brueggemann for making me more alert to what the Psalms are saying about our common human relation to God and more honest about my own feelings as I pray the Psalms every day as part of the Liturgy of the Hours." --Joseph A. Bracken, SJ coauthor of Self-Emptying Love in a Global Context "Few persons have so lived in and with the Psalms as Walter Brueggemann. Here he takes us into their depths, which are so clearly the depths of our human existence. The piety of the Psalms is strong medicine. Brueggemann bids us take it for the cure of our souls." --Patrick D. Miller author of Interpreting the Psalms and They Cried to the Lord Walter Brueggemann is William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia. He is the author of numerous works including Theology of the Old Testament, Inscribing the Text, Prophetic Imagination, and David's Truth.

Book excerpt: Jesus died with a psalm on his lips. For millennia, humans have been shaped by the Psalms. And before the Nazis banned him from publishing, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer published this book on the Psalms. What comfort is found in the Psalter? What praise, and what challenge? What threat? In the pages of Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible, discover the richness this book of Scripture held for Bonhoeffer, and learn to pray psalms along with Christ. First published in 1940, this classic reveals how the Psalms are essential to the life of the believer and offers Bonhoeffer's reflections on psalms of thanksgiving, suffering, guilt, praise, and lament. Now with an introduction by Walter Brueggemann and excerpts from the Psalms, Bonhoeffer's timeless work offers contemporary readers ancient wisdom and resources for the living of these days. Includes a biographical sketch of Bonhoeffer written by his friend and biographer Eberhard Bethge.
