Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prune Growing in California Prunes are grown in nearly every part of California. Some of the most important considerations affecting the choice of a location are given in this circular. The oldest and most important prune sections are located in the central coast counties. Increased acreages of this fruit are yearly being brought into bearing in the central districts and in the great interior valleys. In the mountain districts, immediately upon the coast, and in the extreme southern part of the state, however, the commercial production of this crop is not of much importance. The seasons of 1923 and 1926 were years of heavy crops and low prices. In 1924 the crop was reduced by frost and returns were relatively high, while 1925 represented what might be considered a normal year with average prices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pruning of Citrus Trees in California One school' of primers adheres to the practice of heavy annual cutting and claims markedly beneficial results. Another and larger group advises the practice of light to moderate pruning with claims of equally satisfactory results. A considerable and increasing number recommends confining pruning treatment to the cutting out of dead wood, interfering branches, and vigorous sucker shoots, with results that are stated-to be all that could be desired. The divergency of Opinion among growers of citrus fruits con cerning pruning is so remarkable as to warrant a brief analysis of its causes. The almost total lack of experimental data on this subject is partially responsible for the situation. The main contributing factor, however, has been the influence exerted by individual pruners here and there, who through observation and experience have developed rather definite systems. Through long use or the dominant personality of their originator certain of these have become well established in standard orchard practice. Citrus tree pruning practice in California has been developed largely ou-the basis of mechanical procedure rather than as a result of an understanding of the principles involved. To the average grower, pruning is a purely mechanical operation, consisting of the removal of certain parts of the plant in varying amounts, usually practiced simply as a matter of custom. Of recent years a wholesome tendency to question the value of pruning has developed, with the result that a considerable number of growers have discontinued the practice until proof of its necessity shall be brought forward. The fact remains, however, that few growers have given the pruning problem more than a very superficial study, the majority confining their efforts to the attempt to master some purely mechanical system which is being used with reported success elsewhere. Pruning is an operation which must be regarded as having a profound influence on the vital activities of the plant. Satisfactory results cannot reasonably. Be expected to follow mere perfunctory or mechanical cutting out of parts of the tree. Fundamental to an intelligent attitude on the part of the grower toward the pruning question is an understanding of the basic principles of plant physi ology which affect growth and fruit production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vine Pruning in California, Vol. 2 Pruning Systems - There is a very large number of systems of pruning applied to the vine. These Systems differ principally in the form given to the body of the vine, and in the management of the annual growth. Some of the differences depend on variations in the nature of the vines, on the cultural and growing conditions of the district, and on the Objects of the grower. Others are unessential and are merely a matter of taste. The best system is that which is most adapted to all the conditions of the particular vineyard. Any system which does not take into account the nature of the vine is defective. Ideals of Pruning - Before commencing work, the pruner Should form a mental picture of an ideal vine of the form desired. Vines are subject to so many accidents of weather, cultivation, and disease that, even with the greatest care and skill, it may be impossible to Obtain a single ideal vine in the vineyard. The ideal vine, however, must exist in the pruner's mind or all his vines will be unnecessarily defective. With this ideal constantly in mind, he is able to take such measures as will as much as possible direct the energies of the vine in the right direction and counteract all contrary influences and thus to make each vine approach as nearly as possible the perfect model. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apricot in California From the above table it is learned that Riverside County has the greatest total number of trees, but Santa Clara has the greatest number in bearing, Santa Clara County ranks second in total number of trees and Ventura third. Ventura also holds third place for the number of trees in bearing. By far the greatest increase in any one county in eleven years has been in Riverside County, which moved from eleventh place in 1909 to first place in 1920. While apricots grow best in the deep, moist valley soils, they are found in abundance along the foothills of all our mountain ranges where there is sufficient moisture to support growth. Although the apricot seems to do best in gravelly or sandy soils, it does well where there is a high percentage of clay, and even in stiff adobe. The apricot, on its own roots at least, will not tolerate a waterlogged soil, but on myrobalan root it is adapted to places where the prune might do well, but where the peach or cherry would not survive. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apricot Growing in California The principal rootstocks used for apricots are apricot, peach, and myrobalan. The apricot and peach are more generally used than the myrobalan. The apricot cannot be relied upon to make a strong union with the myrobalan, for, although the trees often grow well for a number of years, they are apt to break at the graft union under stress of heavy loads or strong winds. The apricot root is resistant to the attacks of nematodes and the Pacific peach tree borers, and for this reason is valuable in districts where these pests are known to exist. All three principal rootstocks used for apricots are more or less susceptible to crown gall. The myrobalan is thought by some growers to be more resistant to oak fungus than either the apricot or peach, and is therefore used to some extent as a rootstock for the apricot. A questionnaire submitted to the nurserymen of California by the Division of Pomology showed that the percentage of apricot trees propagated on apricot stock in the years 1923 to 1928 inclusive varied from 30 per cent to 56 per cent. The percentage on peach stock varied to approximately the same extent. The percentage of apricots on apricot stock was greater than on peach stock four years out of the six for which records were obtained. The proportion of apricots on myrobalan decreased from per cent in 1923 to about 12 per cent in 1928. A few apricots. On Davidiana stock were also propagated during this period. In 1929 approximately 46 per cent of the apricot trees propagated were on apricot root, 16 per cent on myrobalan, and 38 per cent on peach. The almond is not used as a. Rootstock for apricots.
