Book Synopsis Analysis of the German EXIST-II-Program and Its Transferability to Mexico by : Claudia Erika Gutiérrez Díaz
Download or read book Analysis of the German EXIST-II-Program and Its Transferability to Mexico written by Claudia Erika Gutiérrez Díaz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promotion of entrepreneurship in higher education appears in the political spectrum as a new economic policy arena. In this field policy blanks and new kinds of problems need to be addressed. Scholars agree that many of the current structures and models in higher education do not fit the necessary requirements for the development of entrepreneurship training. New perspectives in this field can be gained through an analysis of the feasibility of a policy transfer of the German EXIST-II-Program to Mexico. This program was developed to address the entrepreneurial potential within higher educational institutions through the coordination of entrepreneurial efforts carried out by regional, national and supranational actors. An empirical analysis of the objectives, regulations, actors and governance, personnel (staff), financial resources, beneficiaries and output of the program as well as a comparative study of Germany versus Mexico in this book demonstrates under what conditions the transfer of know-how from Germany, specifically from the EXIST-II-Program to universities in Mexico could be implemented. The research offers alternatives to improve the current ongoing initiatives in Mexico.

Book Synopsis Cybernetic Revolutionaries by : Eden Medina
Download or read book Cybernetic Revolutionaries written by Eden Medina and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical study of Chile's twin experiments with cybernetics and socialism, and what they tell us about the relationship of technology and politics. In Cybernetic Revolutionaries, Eden Medina tells the history of two intersecting utopian visions, one political and one technological. The first was Chile's experiment with peaceful socialist change under Salvador Allende; the second was the simultaneous attempt to build a computer system that would manage Chile's economy. Neither vision was fully realized—Allende's government ended with a violent military coup; the system, known as Project Cybersyn, was never completely implemented—but they hold lessons for today about the relationship between technology and politics. Drawing on extensive archival material and interviews, Medina examines the cybernetic system envisioned by the Chilean government—which was to feature holistic system design, decentralized management, human-computer interaction, a national telex network, near real-time control of the growing industrial sector, and modeling the behavior of dynamic systems. She also describes, and documents with photographs, the network's Star Trek-like operations room, which featured swivel chairs with armrest control panels, a wall of screens displaying data, and flashing red lights to indicate economic emergencies. Studying project Cybersyn today helps us understand not only the technological ambitions of a government in the midst of political change but also the limitations of the Chilean revolution. This history further shows how human attempts to combine the political and the technological with the goal of creating a more just society can open new technological, intellectual, and political possibilities. Technologies, Medina writes, are historical texts; when we read them we are reading history.

Book Synopsis Environment and Citizenship in Latin America by : Alex Latta
Download or read book Environment and Citizenship in Latin America written by Alex Latta and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship related to environmental questions in Latin America has only recently begun to coalesce around citizenship as both an empirical site of inquiry and an analytical frame of reference. This has led to a series of new insights and perspectives, but few efforts have been made to bring these various approaches into a sustained conversation across different social, temporal and geographic contexts. This volume is the result of a collaborative endeavour to advance debates on environmental citizenship, while simultaneously and systematically addressing broader theoretical and methodological questions related to the particularities of studying environment and citizenship in Latin America. Providing a window onto leading scholarship in the field, the book also sets an ambitious agenda to spark further research.
Book Synopsis Queer Sites in Global Contexts by : Regner Ramos
Download or read book Queer Sites in Global Contexts written by Regner Ramos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Sites in Global Contexts showcases a variety of cross-cultural perspectives that foreground the physical and online experiences of LGBTQ+ people living in the Caribbean, South and North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The individual chapters—a collection of research-based texts by scholars around the world—provide twelve compelling case studies: queer sites that include buildings, digital networks, natural landscapes, urban spaces, and non-normative bodies. By prioritizing divergent histories and practices of queer life in geographies that are often othered by dominant queer studies in the West—female sex workers, people of color, indigenous populations, Latinx communities, trans identities, migrants—the book constructs thoroughly situated, nuanced discussions on queerness through a variety of research methods. The book presents tangible examples of empirical research and practice-based work in the fields of queer and gender studies; geography, architectural, and urban theory; and media and digital culture. Responding to the critical absence surrounding experiences of non-White queer folk in Western academia, Queer Sites in Global Contexts acts as a timely resource for scholars, activists, and thinkers interested in queer placemaking practices—both spatial and digital—of diverse cultures.
