Book excerpt: Excerpt from Provo, the Garden City of Utah: Its Resources and Attractions Stling at the base of the Wasatch Range, where eply seamed front towers high and precipitously toward the sky, lies Provo, the Garden City of Utah. The pioneers of Utah entered the Great Salt Lake Val ley in the fall of 1847, and in the following spring a small party from this body started south on an exploring expedition. Im mediately on reaching the summit of the divide, between what are now Salt Lake and Utah Counties, they gazed southward, and beheld stretched out before them, calm and undisturbed, a beautiful sheet of water some thirty miles in length, hemmed in on all sides by towering peaks, with yet enough of plain to tempt the settler, and with many streams pouring out from rugged ravines, threading their silvery way through the nu cultivated area until lost amid the sleeping waters of the lake. Roaming along the banks of these rivers in search of game, and about the shores of the lake, was a tribe of Indians who possessed the spot as their own. They were the Utes, though. The opinion of some is that they properly should be called Pah Utes, or Water Utes. The fact seems to be that not only this lake and Utah County, but even the territory, ultimately derived the name Utah from this tribe, and that Piute county is only if Pah Ute corrupted, or improved, as we may choose to think. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was King Follett? When he was fatally injured digging a well in Nauvoo in March 1844, why did Joseph Smith use his death to deliver the monumental doctrinal sermon now known as the King Follett Discourse? Much has been written about the sermon, but little about King. Although King left no personal writings, Joann Follett Mortensen, King’s third great-granddaughter, draws on more than thirty years of research in civic and Church records and in the journals and letters of King’s peers to piece together King’s story from his birth in New Hampshire and moves westward where, in Ohio, he and his wife, Louisa, made the life-shifting decision to accept the new Mormon religion. From that point, this humble, hospitable, and hardworking family followed the Church into Missouri where their devotion to Joseph Smith was refined and burnished. King was the last Mormon prisoner in Missouri to be released from jail. According to family lore, King was one of the Prophet’s bodyguards. He was also a Danite, a Mason, and an officer in the Nauvoo Legion. After his death, Louisa and their children settled in Iowa where some associated with the Cutlerities and the RLDS Church; others moved on to California. One son joined the Mormon Battalion and helped found Mormon communities in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. While King would have died virtually unknown had his name not been attached to the discourse, his life story reflects the reality of all those whose faith became the foundation for a new religion. His biography is more than one man’s life story. It is the history of the early Restoration itself.

Download or read book On Zion’s Mount written by Jared Farmer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shrouded in the lore of legendary Indians, Mt. Timpanogos beckons the urban populace of Utah. And yet, no “Indian” legend graced the mount until Mormon settlers conjured it—once they had displaced the local Indians, the Utes, from their actual landmark, Utah Lake. On Zion’s Mount tells the story of this curious shift. It is a quintessentially American story about the fraught process of making oneself “native” in a strange land. But it is also a complex tale of how cultures confer meaning on the environment—how they create homelands. Only in Utah did Euro-American settlers conceive of having a homeland in the Native American sense—an endemic spiritual geography. They called it “Zion.” Mormonism, a religion indigenous to the United States, originally embraced Indians as “Lamanites,” or spiritual kin. On Zion’s Mount shows how, paradoxically, the Mormons created their homeland at the expense of the local Indians—and how they expressed their sense of belonging by investing Timpanogos with “Indian” meaning. This same pattern was repeated across the United States. Jared Farmer reveals how settlers and their descendants (the new natives) bestowed “Indian” place names and recited pseudo-Indian legends about those places—cultural acts that still affect the way we think about American Indians and American landscapes.
