Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liberalisation in the telecommunication market and thus the advent of competition has had a tremendous impact on business in this area. New operators have started to offer telecommunication services in competition with the classical national network operators. This in turn will have an impact on the market share, the tariff structure, the Quality of Service (QoS) and the services offered to the end customers. A way to maintain or increase revenue for network operators is to additionally offer new services to the customers. The final target is a so-called "Full Service Network (FSN)", which is capable of offering all types of bi-directional multimedia services. The provisioning of new telecommunication services in general and new multimedia services in particular is made possible by the availability of several new technologies as well as through advances in standardisation. R&D policies world-wide but especially in Europe have forced the development of new networking technologies such as ATM, xDSL and HFC as well as new video technologies as defined by DVB and DAVIC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: End-to-End QoS Network Design Quality of Service for Rich-Media & Cloud Networks Second Edition New best practices, technical strategies, and proven designs for maximizing QoS in complex networks This authoritative guide to deploying, managing, and optimizing QoS with Cisco technologies has been thoroughly revamped to reflect the newest applications, best practices, hardware, software, and tools for modern networks. This new edition focuses on complex traffic mixes with increased usage of mobile devices, wireless network access, advanced communications, and video. It reflects the growing heterogeneity of video traffic, including passive streaming video, interactive video, and immersive videoconferences. It also addresses shifting bandwidth constraints and congestion points; improved hardware, software, and tools; and emerging QoS applications in network security. The authors first introduce QoS technologies in high-to-mid-level technical detail, including protocols, tools, and relevant standards. They examine new QoS demands and requirements, identify reasons to reevaluate current QoS designs, and present new strategic design recommendations. Next, drawing on extensive experience, they offer deep technical detail on campus wired and wireless QoS design; next-generation wiring closets; QoS design for data centers, Internet edge, WAN edge, and branches; QoS for IPsec VPNs, and more. Tim Szigeti, CCIE No. 9794 is a Senior Technical Leader in the Cisco System Design Unit. He has specialized in QoS for the past 15 years and authored Cisco TelePresence Fundamentals. Robert Barton, CCIE No. 6660 (R&S and Security), CCDE No. 2013::6 is a Senior Systems Engineer in the Cisco Canada Public Sector Operation. A registered Professional Engineer (P. Eng), he has 15 years of IT experience and is primarily focused on wireless and security architectures. Christina Hattingh spent 13 years as Senior Member of Technical Staff in Unified Communications (UC) in Cisco’s Services Routing Technology Group (SRTG). This book was released on 2003-06-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing Quality of Service (QoS) in the Internet is currently the most ch- lenging topic for researchers, industry and network providers. Now, the only available service in the Internet is the best e?ort service, which assumes tra?c is processed as quickly as possible, but there is no guarantee as to timely or actual delivery. On the other hand, there is pressure to o?er new applications in the Internet (like VoIP, videoconferencing, on-line games, e-commerce, etc. ) but this requires some packet transfer guarantees from the network (e. g. , low packet transfer delay, low packet losses). To meet these requirements, new architectures for providing IP- based QoS in the Internet are proposed: Integrated Services (IntServ) and Di?erentiated Services (Di?Serv). However, these architectures need some enhancements to provide adequate solutions for resource mana- ment, signaling, tra?c engineering, tra?c handling mechanisms, etc. In the European research community, a number of projects inside the Fifth Framework Programme were addressed solving the above issues; among these AQUILA (Adaptive Resource Control for QoS Using an IP-Based Layered - chitecture), CADENUS (Creation and Deployment of End-User Services in P- mium IP Networks), and TEQUILA (Tra?c Engineering for Quality of Service in the Internet at Large Scale) are excellent examples. The main achievements from these projects are the prototypes for ?xed QoS IP networks. The extension of these proposed solutions into the wireless environment is the next step.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet is subject to permanent modi?cations and to continuous restr- turing. This is primarily due to the tremendous rise in demand for bandwidth by the ever increasing number of users. When compared to the early years of the Internet the quality of the services o?ered had to be signi?cantly improved in di?erent respects (delay, network and service availability, jitter,. . . )inorder to satisfy the needs of many new applications. Within the last decade two new developments have contributed to many new opportunities, as well as to a need for intensive research and development: – the increased mobility of users together with the desire for ubiquitous hi- quality access to all o?ered services, at reasonable cost; – the use of wireless communication. Despite their relatively low capacity (when compared with ?xed backbone n- works) the use of radio links supports the ubiquitous availability of Internet services in a quasiperfect way. A considerable amount of research and development activities are currently - ing on worldwide in order to adapt Internet services to the particular needs of mobile users and of wireless communication links. These questions were - tensively discussed at the ?rst workshop organized by the EURO-NGI Network of Excellence (‘Next Generation Internet’), which has been funded by the - ropean Union since January 2004 under their IST programme.
