Book excerpt: The popularity of homeopathy has been increasing dramatically both in America and worldwide. Annual world sales of homeopathic remedies are approaching two billion dollars. In this thorough examination of homeopathy, physicist Jay W. Shelton analyzes the history, the remedies, the logical inconsistencies, and the effectiveness of this popular alternative medicine. Invented by German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), homeopathy is based on two key principles: (1) the law of similars--symptoms induced in healthy volunteers after ingestion of a substance are the same symptoms in sick people that this substance will cure; and (2) the concept of "potentization"--the most diluted remedies have the greatest curative power. Shelton clearly shows that although these principles may have had the ring of science in the early 19th century, they are not well supported by today's science. And yet, most patients who visit homeopaths are better afterwards. Homeopaths assume the remedies are the cause. Shelton finds explanations based on known science to be better supported by the evidence. Unassisted natural healing, changes in lifestyle urged by the homeopath, the placebo effect, and cessation of harmful treatments are more probable causes of improved health. This being the case, he pursues the question why so many people continue to believe that the remedies themselves are responsible. Among the contributing factors Shelton notes: the plausible-sounding explanations of homeopathic theory, a fundamental misunderstanding among homeopaths of science and its methods, and, ultimately, the poor quality of education in critical thinking and science. This reasoned, balanced, and in-depth assessment will interest both homeopaths and conventional medical practitioners, as well as consumers curious about a well-known and much-publicized alternative medicine.

Book excerpt: The American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH) is the oldest medical organization in the United States, founded three years before the American Medical Association. The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for Parents is the first AIH publication that offers another option for parents who are reluctant to participate in the widespread extreme measures of conventional medicine such as stimulants, antidepressants, and overuse of antibiotics. Step-by-step Edward Shalts, a medical doctor who practices homeopathic medicine, explains what homeopathy is and how it works. He presents a user-friendly overview of acute and chronic issues and shows how parents can deal with them, either on their own for some problems, or in many cases, with a qualified practitioner. This important resource explains the principles of homeopathy, the nature of remedies, and the appropriate time to use homeopathy.

Book excerpt: The perpetual challenge of all students of homoeopathy, whether beginner or experienced, is the overwhelming volume of detailed symptoms in our Material Medicas. We constantly strive to simplify the information, to sort out the clinically useful from the non-distinguishing and general symptoms, to grasp in a single picture the essential features of the remedy. Compounding this difficulty is the fact that most of our sources belong toanother era in time, the rapid changes and unique pressures of modern society have brought froth new facets of our remedies, and even well known symptoms are expressed in a modern idiom which obscures their relationship to the material in older texts. This task of separating the truly essential from the common place and adapting the form to present day expression, has been approached by Roger Morrison with characteristic dedication.

Dr. Amy Rothenberg opens a window into her work of providing complementary and alternative medicine to her patients. From a patient with allergies to a defiant child, from a man with reflux disease to an infertile woman, Dr Rothenbergs informative compilation of stories and musings offers readers insight into both the philosophy and the practicalities of the approaches she uses in the clinic, reflecting the inner workings of a modern day practitioner of naturopathic medicine. Rothenberg has looked deeply into the doctor/patient relationship, the interface between orthodox medicine and natural medicine as well as at her own evolution as a physician. Her introspection coupled with her openness and easy writing style invite even the casual reader on an enjoyable journey through the state of the art and profession of complementary and alternative medicine. She writes with accuracy, detail and flavour. Her story and this book help to define and exemplify the work of naturopathic medicine and further propel patients, medical colleagues and policy makers toward deeper understanding and appreciation of these effective and gentle approaches to healing.

This book is the first to establish the theoretical and experimental basis for homeopathic medicine in a way that serious physicians and scientists can appreciate. Homeopathy: A Frontier in Medical Science compels physicians to consider homeopathy as a viable therapeutic option, and it encourages scientists to explore more seriously the implications of this pharmacological specialty.
