Book excerpt: In the past decade, cooperative wireless networks have emerged as a promising technology that allows wireless devices to take advantage of diversity and link adaptation. In this thesis, we focus on the design and analysis of the medium access control (MAC) layer for the cooperative wireless networks, aiming at two main issues in this field: relay selection under mobility and incentive-based allocation for relaying packets. Specifically, we proposed and analysed 1) an intelligent cooperative MAC protocol to select stable helpers to provide better throughput; 2) two coordination schemes for multiple helpers to tradeoff the diversity advantage and transmission delay; 3) a moneyless incentive scheme which can stimulate the agreement of cooperation; and 4) three monetary incentive allocation mechanisms to stimulate cooperative relaying while maintaining the desired properties. Firstly, our proposed cooperative MAC protocol, referred as PTCoopMAC, can make use of the out-of-date information from the overheard signals to select the optimal stable helper to improve the system throughput. Secondly, we analysed the unconditional relaying success probability for a wireless diversity system with multiple random moving helpers. One Aloha-based and one timer-based coordination schemes were designed to balance the success probability and transmission delay. Thirdly, the moneyless incentive scheme for one cooperative pair transmission can tune up and down the channel access probability of the helper and the source as the reward and payment, respectively. We further provided the conditions on how to select the tuning factors to reach the cooperation agreement. Finally, we proposed three monetary incentive allocation mechanisms towards different design goals. The Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG)-based mechanism aims at efficiency in social welfare; the probabilistic entrance auction (PEA) mechanism targets at lowering the computational effort; and the randomized (RND) mechanism attempts to strike a balance between the two mechanisms. All the proposed solutions were extensively evaluated by simulations. The results demonstrated that our solutions successfully addressed the challenges posed by user mobility and incentive for the cooperative wireless networks. The quality of service (QoS) can be significantly improved by properly incorporating cooperation among user devices.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents packet-level channel modeling, spectrum efficiency optimization and channel estimation for wireless cooperative communication systems with diversity combining. Cooperative transmission in a wireless network allows neighboring nodes to share their communication resources to create a virtual antenna array by distributed transmission and signal processing, which is useful to exploit spatial diversity, increase channel capacity, and attain wider service coverage with single-antenna terminals. How to exploit spatial diversity and leverage the multi-hop channel structure is an important research issue for the cooperative network. In this thesis, two cooperative schemes are considered, amplify and forward (AF) and demodulation and forward (DMF). For AF cooperative systems, finite state Markov chain (FSMC) models are designed in analyzing the system performance considering time-varying channel behaviors and facilitating fast channel simulation. For DMF cooperative systems, first we formulate the optimization problem that jointly chooses the modulation schemes at the source and relay nodes, to maximize the throughput of cooperative systems under the BER constraint. Second, we propose to use the soft values of each bit to devise a simple and effective combining scheme, which can be applied for both AF and DMF cooperative systems. Third, as the soft valuesfrom demodulation process can also be used for measuring the channel estimation accuracy, a soft value-assisted channel estimation has been proposed by iteratively utilizing soft values to refine the accurate channel estimation. In addition, we also implement the soft value module in OFDM-based transceiver system based on a GNU Radio/USRP2 platform, and verify the effectiveness and performance improvement for the proposed SVC systems. As considering wireless cooperative systems has attracted increasing attentions from both academic and industry to meet the demanding of the high data rate transmission, the packet-level channel modeling, adaptive modulation, spectrum efficiency improvement frameworks based on soft value combining and accurate channel estimationalgorithms proposed in this thesis are essential for future proliferation of high data rate, reliable and efficient wireless communication networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of third generation (3G) technologies has caused a vast proliferation of wireless devices and networks, generating an increasing demand for high level Quality of Service (QoS). The wide spread of mobile applications has further reinforced the user need for communication, motivating at the same time the concepts of user cooperation and data dissemination. However, this trend towards continuous exchange of information and ubiquitous connectivity is inherently restricted by the energy-greedy functionalities of high-end devices. These limitations, along with the pressure exerted on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry towards energy awareness, have induced the design of novel energy efficient schemes and algorithms. In this context, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer plays a key role, since it is mainly responsible for the channel access regulation, the transmission scheduling and the resource allocation, thus constituting an appropriate point to effectively address energy efficiency issues that arise due to the users overcrowding. This dissertation provides a contribution to the design, analysis and evaluation of novel MAC protocols for cooperative wireless networks. In our attempt to design energy efficient MAC schemes, we were extensively assisted by the introduction of new techniques, such as Network Coding (NC), that intrinsically bring considerable gains in system performance. The main thesis contributions are divided into two parts. The first part presents NCCARQ, a novel NC-aided Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) MAC protocol for wireless networks. NCCARQ introduces a new access paradigm for cooperative ARQ schemes, exploiting NC benefits in bidirectional communication among wireless users. The NCCARQ performance in terms of QoS and energy efficiency is assessed by means of analytical probabilistic models and extensive computer-based simulations, revealing the significant gains we can achieve compared to standardized MAC solutions. In addition, the impact of realistic wireless channel conditions on the MAC protocol operation further motivated us to study the NCCARQ performance in wireless links affected by correlated shadowing, showing that the channel correlation may adversely affect the distributed cooperation benefits. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the investigation of MAC issues in wireless data dissemination scenarios. In particular, the existence of multiple source nodes in such scenarios generates conflicting situations, considering the selfish behavior of the wireless devices that want to maximize their battery lifetime. Bearing in mind the energy efficiency importance, we propose game theoretic medium access strategies, applying energy-based utility functions which inherently imply energy awareness. In addition, Random Linear NC (RLNC) techniques are adopted to eliminate the need of exchanging excessive control packets, while Analog NC (ANC) is employed to efface the impact of collisions throughout the communication. During the elaboration of this thesis, two general key conclusions have been extracted. First, there is a fundamental requirement for implementation of new MAC protocols in order to effectively deal with state-of-the-art techniques (e.g., NC), recently introduced to enhance both the performance and the energy efficiency of the network. Second, we highlight the importance of designing novel energy efficient MAC protocols, taking into account that traditional approaches - designed mainly to assist the collision avoidance in wireless networks - tend to be obsolete.

Book excerpt: Cooperative communication has recently become a key technology for modern wireless networks such as 3GPP long-term evolution and WiMAX, because in such networks the transmission rate, the communication reliability, and coverage problems could be improved in a cost-effective manner. This, however, faces many design challenges. First, cooperative transmission typically involves a relaying phase which requires extra resources. This may cause a reduction in the spectral efficiency. Second, extra control signaling increases the complexity of operation, which may limit practical implementation. In addition, a wireless channel is time-varying, mainly due to the multipath propagation. As a result, a careful design of efficient cooperative communication systems is required, not only to enhance the spectral efficiency and maintain the quality-of-service (QoS), but also to be practical. In this dissertation, we aim to address the challenges imposed by cooperative communication and wireless transmission, and design the efficient and distributed systems which can be practically implemented in existing wireless systems. The research work is divided into two main topics: 1) adaptive cooperative wireless systems with variable-rate transmission, and 2) cooperative wireless systems with a power consumption constraint. The first topic investigates how the spectral efficiency of cooperative wireless communication systems can be improved while maintaining the QoS in terms of bit error rate and outage probability. The spectral efficiency enhancement is achieved by using three techniques: adaptivity over the relay node (i.e., relay node is active or not), adaptivity over the modulation mode, and relay selection. Based on that, we propose several adaptive cooperative schemes for both the decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) protocols. To evaluate these schemes, we provide performance analysis in terms of average spectral efficiency, average bit error rate (ABER), and outage probability over Rayleigh fading channels. We start with the single-relay cooperative system using DF protocol, in which two adaptive cooperative schemes with variable-rate transmission are proposed. The first scheme, called the minimum error rate scheme (MERS), aims to exploit the transmit diversity to improve the bit error rate. By trading the multiplexing gain against the diversity gain, we propose the second scheme, called the maximum spectral efficiency scheme (MSES), in which cooperative transmission is avoided whenever it is not beneficial. The MERS improves the ABER significantly and achieves equal or better average spectral efficiency compared to the fixed (i.e., non-adaptive) relaying scheme. In contrast, the MSES provides the best average spectral efficiency due to its ability to not only adapt to the channel variation but also to switch between cooperative and non-cooperative transmissions. To further increase the spectral efficiency, we then propose the third scheme, called variable-rate based relay selection (VRRS) scheme, in which a relay node is selected from among the available relay nodes, based on a predefined criterion. Furthermore, we propose two AF adaptive cooperative schemes, mainly to enhance the spectral efficiency. In the first scheme, we introduce a generalized switching policy (GSP) for a single-relay cooperative wireless system that exploits the variable-rate transmission and useful cooperative regions. The second scheme, called the AF efficient relay selection (AFERS) scheme, extends the GSP to also consider the relay selection technique. Analytical and simulation results verify that the AFERS scheme not only outperforms conventional direct transmission in terms of the average spectral efficiency, but also the AF fixed relaying and the outage-based AF adaptive cooperative scheme. The second topic investigates the fair power consumption of the relay nodes for AF cooperative wireless communication systems. The fairness is defined as to achieve equal power consumption over the relay nodes. We focus on how the relay selection process can be controlled in a distributed manner so that the power consumption of the relay nodes can be included in relay selection. We first introduce a simple closed-form expression for the weight coefficient used in order to achieve the considered fairness that depends only on the local average channel conditions of the relay path. We then derive closed-form expressions of the weighted outage probability and ABER and show that our proposed strategy not only has less complexity than the conventional centralized one but also provides better accuracy in distributing the total consumed power equally among the relay nodes without affecting the performance.
