Download or read book The Best of the Bargain written by John Fagant and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-10-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A twelve day inaugural journey by President-elect Abraham Lincoln in 1861 took him through Western New York (WNY) for a two night visit. The crowds along the way were large, excited and, at times, seemingly out of control. Arrival at Buffalo's Exchange Street Station produced near hysteria as thousands attempted to get a better view of Lincoln. The depot crowd, 10,000 strong and intent on witnessing history, overwhelmed the small security force protecting the President. Despite the aggressive and boisterous atmosphere, Lincoln eventually made his way out of the building - a bit roughed up but unscathed and unharmed. During his stay in the region, Lincoln met with a former President, several political leaders and a German immigrant group. However, his story in WNY also included connections with several individuals. He met the lady who gave up her room at the hotel for him; a little girl who gave him flowers, and in quite possibly the most famous Lincoln story of all, another little girl who wrote him a letter suggesting he grow a beard. There was even a rare photograph taken of him on the rear platform of the train, which has yet to make its way into the public eye. With a nearly out-of-control yet enthusiastic public, a pickpocket's heaven, and even the occasional snowball, the Lincoln visit to Buffalo was for many years afterwards a memorable moment in local history. The Best of the Bargain will take you back to a long neglected story of Western New York.

Book Synopsis Places of the Underground Railroad by : Tom Calarco
Download or read book Places of the Underground Railroad written by Tom Calarco and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date compilation details the most significant stops along the Underground Railroad. Places of the Underground Railroad: A Geographical Guide presents an overview of the various sites that comprised this unique road to freedom, with entries chosen to represent all regions of the United States and Canada. Where most works on the Underground Railroad focus on the people involved, this unique guide explores the intricacies of travel that allowed the "conductors" to carry out the tasks entrusted to them. It presents an accurate picture of just where the Underground Railroad was and how it operated, including routes and itineraries and connections between the various Railroad locations. Through information about these locations, the book takes readers from the beginnings of organized aid to fugitive slaves during the period following the American Revolution up to the Civil War. It delineates the possible routes fugitive slaves may have taken by identifying the rivers, canals, and railroads that were sometimes used. And it shows that a network, though decentralized and variable over time and place, truly was established among Underground Railroad participants.

Download or read book Women Will Vote written by Susan Goodier and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Will Vote celebrates the 2017 centenary of women’s right to full suffrage in New York State. Susan Goodier and Karen Pastorello highlight the activism of rural, urban, African American, Jewish, immigrant, and European American women, as well as male suffragists, both upstate and downstate, that led to the positive outcome of the 1917 referendum. Goodier and Pastorello argue that the popular nature of the women’s suffrage movement in New York State and the resounding success of the referendum at the polls relaunched suffrage as a national issue. If women had failed to gain the vote in New York, Goodier and Pastorello claim, there is good reason to believe that the passage and ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment would have been delayed. Women Will Vote makes clear how actions of New York’s patchwork of suffrage advocates heralded a gigantic political, social, and legal shift in the United States. Readers will discover that although these groups did not always collaborate, by working in their own ways toward the goal of enfranchising women they essentially formed a coalition. Together, they created a diverse social and political movement that did not rely solely on the motivating force of white elites and a leadership based in New York City. Goodier and Pastorello convincingly argue that the agitation and organization that led to New York women’s victory in 1917 changed the course of American history.
