Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormonal Proteins and Peptides, Volume II reviews extensively the knowledge on the biology and chemistry of the protein and peptide hormones. This book presents the structures of the various protein and peptide hormones. Organized into three chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the various aspects of the structure and function of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) with reference to the ability to stimulate the adrenal gland of the rat, amphibian melanophores, and adipose tissues of the rat and rabbit. This text then reviews the isolation, purification, and elucidation of the amino acid sequence of corticotropins from various species. Other chapters consider the structures of porcine and human ACTH. This book discusses as well the working hypothesis for studies on the secondary-tertiary structure of peptide hormones. The final chapter deals with the abbreviations used for amino acids and protecting groups. This book is a valuable resource for peptide chemists, biologists, biochemists, and research workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge of the physiology of the endocrine system and hormone synthesis and release, transport, and action at the molecular and cellular levels. It presents essential as well as in-depth information of value to both medical students and specialists in Endocrinology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. Although it is well established that the endocrine system regulates essential functions involved in growth, reproduction, and homeostasis, it is increasingly being recognized that this complex regulatory system comprises not only hormones secreted by the classic endocrine glands but also hormones and regulatory factors produced by many organs, and involves extensive crosstalk with the neural and immune system. At the same time, our knowledge of the molecular basis of hormone action has greatly improved. Understanding this complexity of endocrine physiology is crucial to prevent endocrine disorders, to improve the sensitivity of our diagnostic tools, and to provide the rationale for pharmacological, immunological, or genetic interventions. It is such understanding that this book is designed to foster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as an introductory text in neuroendocrinology; the study of the interaction between the brain and endocrine system and the influence of this on behaviour. The endocrine glands, pituitary gland and hypothalamus and their interactions and hormones are discussed. The action of steroid and thyroid hormone receptors and the regulation of target cell response to hormones is examined. The function of neuropeptides is discussed with respect to the neuroendocrine system and behaviour. The neuroimmune system and lymphokines are described and the interaction between the neuroendocrine and neuroimmune systems discussed. Finally, methods for studying hormonal influences on behaviour are outlined. Each chapter has review and essay questions designed for advanced students and honours or graduate students with a background in neuroscience, respectively.

Book excerpt: Incorporates the developments in the field during the 25 years since the last major overview of peptide and protein hormones. Reviews the most important features of the hormones, including structure/activity relationships. Also describes their medical use, noting that western society encourages an overabundance of aggressive stress hormones, and that the role of doctors is to return them into balance with cooperative sex hormones. Of particular use to researchers, students, and practitioners is a special listing of the hormones according to a network of structural similarity and regulating cascades. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Biology, Modern Trends in Physiological Sciences, Volume 33: Assay of Protein and Polypeptide Hormones focuses on the assays of protein and polypeptide hormones. The selection first discusses the general principles of protein and polypeptide hormone assays, including conditions and basic factors for bioassays and status of biological assays. The book looks at the assays of hypophyseal hormones, such as growth hormones, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), thyrotropin, gonadotropins, prolactin, vasopressin, and oxytocin. Concerns include radioimmunoassay, standards of thyrotropin, immunoassay of hypophyseal gonadotropins, and bioassay of prolactin. The book evaluates the assays of pancreatic hormones, such as insulin and glucagon. Chemical structure and properties of insulin and radioimmunoassay of glucagon are explained. The text also focuses on the assays of erythropoietin, renin, human chorionic gonadotropin, and human placental lactogen (HPL). Concerns include augmentation of red cell volume; biological application of renin assays; and similarities and differences between hypophyseal somatotropin and HPL. The selection is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the assays of protein and polypeptide hormones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is neuroendocrinology, that branch of biological science devoted to the interactions between the two major integrative organ systems of animals-the endocrine and nervous systems. Although this science today reflects a fusion of endocrinology and neurobiology, this synthetic ap proach is relatively recent. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the British physiologists, Bayliss and Starling, first proposed endocrinology to be an independent field of inquiry, they went to great lengths to establish the autonomy of chemical secretions in general and their independence from nervous control in particular (Bayliss, W. M. , and Starling, E. H. , 1902, The mechanism of pancreatic secretion,]. Physiol. 28:325). They argued with Pav lov, who said that there was a strong influence of the nervous system on the gastrointestinal phenomena the endocrinologists were studying. For several decades, the English physiologists prevailed, at least in the West; and Pavlov's critique was not taken to heart by the practitioners of the newly emerging discipline of endocrinology. Through the work of Harris, the Scharrers, Sawyer, Everett, and others, there has been something of a scientific detente in the latter half of this century; the hybrid field of neuroendocrinology is now regarded as one of the corner stones of modern neural science and is of fundamental importance in basic and clinical endocrinology.

Book excerpt: It can be concluded (under the specific experimental procedures em ployed) that:- 1) HCG labelled with 1 - 2 atoms of radioactive iodine did not differ sig nificantly from the unlabelled hormone; 2) The ovary alone exhibited a capacity to affix specifically HCG; 3) The amount of radioactive material in the ovary was directly proport ional to the quantity of labelled HCG injected; 4) When the HCG present in the circulation is bound to an antiserum to HCG, the antigen-antibody complex is not concentrated by the ovary; 5) Circulating labelled HCG decreased to 50% within 30 minutes following a single intravenous injection; 6) There are four different phases of ovarian uptake of HCG, namely: the first phase, when there is only an inflow from the circulation and stor age mainly in the follicular envelopes; the second phase, when there is a greater inflow than outflow; the third phase, when the inflow is equal to the outflow; and the fourth period, when the outflow is bigger than the in flow.
