La Comision Federal de Comunicacion (FCC) estima que se han construido par 10 menos 75,000 torres de telecomunicacion en los Estados Unidos y algunos grupos de la industria indican que Gada ana se erigen mas de mil de ellas [Chiles 1997]. No se canace el numero exacto de trabajadores que participan en labores de construccion y mantenimiento de torres. Los trabajadores se clasifican en una serie de subgrupos ocupacionales para los cuales se recopilan datos de empleo. Estos grupos incluyen trabajadores del sector de telecomunicacion, pintores, erectores de torres, y mecanicos encargados de la reparacion de equipo electrico y electronico. Ademias de las torres de telecommunicacion, los dispositivos de transmision de servicios de comunicacion inalambrica se montan con frecuencia en el perfmetro de los tech os de edificios, lo cual expone a los trabajadores al peligro de cafdas.
