It is a story about physical as well as emotional struggles and the woman who stood by his side all the way through. Suffice it to say it could well be a disease with a love story, or a love story with a disease.I tackle this story with fervor and ferocity so the details are graphic of the physical experience and the emotional parts very deep. No holds have been barred here so the queasy stomach should beware. As I said I might even scare you but it is a scaring for your own protection. So even if you jump from fright the information will enable you to land on your feet. There are significant lessons to be learned. I am from the group of men in the world who have the highest incidence of the disease (Jamaican men). For that reason I believe I am very qualified to tell the story. I survived the physical and emotional blackholes that bedecked my path with this disease and hope my story will be helpful to many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year almost a quarter of a million confused and frightened American men are tossed into a prostate cancer cauldron stirred by salespeople representing a multibillion-dollar industry. In this flourishing business, the radical prostatectomy is still the most widely recommended treatment option. Yet a recent and definitive study in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that out of the fifty thousand prostate operations performed annually, more than forty thousand are unjustified. But this is no surprise given that 99 percent of all doctors treating this disease are surgeons or radiation therapists. The appalling fact is that men are still being rushed into a major operation that rarely prolongs life and more than half the time leaves them impotent. Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers is a report on the latest thinking in prostate cancer therapy: close monitoring–active surveillance rather than surgery or radiation–should be the initial treatment approach for many men. There are three stages of prostate cancer and this book will provide accurate information about how to distinguish between them: Low-Risk, which requires no immediate treatment; Intermediate-Risk, which will benefit from surgery, radiation, and/or hormonal therapy; and High-Risk, a type that does require immediate treatment with a combination of therapies. In a unique collaboration, doctor and patient provide a wholly new perspective on managing this disease. Ralph Blum’s account of his personal struggle, together with Dr.Mark Scholz’s presentation of newscientific advances, provides convincing evidence that this noninvasive approach can be crucial in preventing tens of thousands of men from being overtreated every year. Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers serves as an indispensable map through the medical minefield of prostate cancer.

Book excerpt: Although prostate cancer is a disease that strikes nearly 200,000 men every year, it is a disease that has been shrouded in silence, in part because it strikes at the very core of masculine identity. But in Man to Man, bestselling author Michael Korda breaks that silence, turning the story of his illness and recovery into a candid and instructive book that speaks not only to every man and woman whose life has been touched by prostate cancer but to everyone who lives in fear of it. With unsparing frankness, Korda describes how he survived the ordeal of prostate surgery and its painful and humiliating aftereffects. He tells us how tumors are graded, evaluates different treatments, and makes sense of prostate cancer's mystifying "numbers." Practical, immensely readable, filled with information, and, above all, hopeful, Man to Man is literally a life-saver.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men after skin cancer. However this cancer is highly curable and most men live for many years after treatment; only eleven percent of cancer deaths are due to prostate cancer. It is well known that the side effects of the treatment cause more suffering than the disease itself. Side effects of surgery include incontinence and erectile difficulties; radiation therapy leads to urinary and bowel problems; and androgen deprivation (hormone) therapy leads to a broad range of long-term side effects affecting physical and emotional functioning. But it is not only the man who suffers through treatment and its side effects. The partners and spouses of prostate cancer survivors are known to experience distress as the man they love moves through the various stages of diagnosis, treatment, and survival. While prostate cancer is a couples' disease, there is much attention paid to the man with cancer and very little to the person and his partner or spouse, who is his prime supporter and who often struggles to make sense of what has happened and why, and how best to support and take care of him. Prostate Cancer and the Man You Love speaks to the loving partners/spouses of men with prostate cancer, whether soon after diagnosis, or later when the man gets on with the rest of his life. Katz includes both the medical information necessary to understanding the disease and firsthand accounts from cancer patients and survivors and their partners. Tips for communication and problem solving, with both partners and health care teams, are offered throughout. Anyone dealing with prostate cancer will find in these pages comfort and insight, as well as specific advice for coping, healing, and moving forward in the spirit of healing and love.

Book excerpt: In 1992, at the age of 55, Mr. Lintzenich was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This book is his personal story, told in laymen's terms, spanning over seven years. The step-by-step journey (looking at both the serious and humorous sides of this ordeal) candidly tells about the fears, confusion, and expectations as his life was impacted by prostate cancer. It begins with the shocking diagnosis and examines each step of the process as he learned of the treatment options, and struggled to choose the course of action right for him. The personal and medical information is a compilation of first-hand experience, advice from physicians, literature provided by the hospital, and personal research done after the diagnosis. The book is for those who worry about prostate cancer, for those who must decide on the choices of what to do after a positive diagnosis, for those who fear prostate cancer surgery, and for those who contemplate how their lives will be impacted. Above all it is a book that comforts and is filled with hope for both the patient and their families. Dr. William J. Catalona, renowned prostate cancer research pioneer and surgeon, commented that Joe's perspective offers "hope and encouragement" rather than emphasizing the bad side effects that can occur with prostate cancer surgery...a vivid and often touching detail of one man's encounter with prostate cancer...will be appreciated by patients and their families for its accurate information, its clarity, and the hope and encouragement that it gives.

Book excerpt: Recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and approaching surgery, Jack McCallum wanted to tackle the confusion, misconceptions, and conflicting medical advice that so many men struggle with when thinking about the disease. So he got to work writing The Prostate Monologues. Through the lens of his own experience, McCallum attacks the nitty-gritty questions about prostate cancer that men think about (but may be too bashful to ask their doctors) with honesty and humor. For example, “When is it safe to attempt intercourse, or at least, self-inflicted orgasm?” Or, if you have surgery, “What’s it like the first time you shop for adult diapers?” With wry humor, McCallum decodes the sometimes-confusing jargon of medical professionals so that it is understandable and relatable to “regular” men. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men and the second most fatal. Worse than the obvious commonality and mortality of the disease, though, is the fact that prostate cancer can rob a man of his manhood. Accordingly, McCallum handles the subject not only with care and knowledge, but also with good cheer. Through the honest telling of his own story, and drawing on the latest research, McCallum shares insight into what’s worked for him—and what’s proven to work—in surviving cancer with your sense of humor intact.

A Problem of Men, is an easy to read, informative, caring and compassionate journey of understanding of man's prostate, one of man's most important organs, bearing the responsibility for reproduction and making of new babies, yet very susceptible to potentially fatal diseases. This book explains the value of the prostate and the risks it faces, taking you on that journey with the authors, a prostate cancer survivor and a renowned urologist. You may turn back, jump forward, or repeat specific chapters as you journey. Every chapter is specific in it own rights. ---------------- One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 20% of them will die from it. Almost every man will have some form of problem with his prostate during his life. More than 95 percent of men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the women in their lives, find themselves wanting to understand more about available treatment options, before they make their decision for choice of treatment. This book fills that information void by providing an abundance of information in an orderly fashion and helps with the understanding, education and relief. ------------------ The book was written to encourage men to get a regular medical check-up (yearly) and to take action quickly when they are diagnosed with a prostate problem, particularly prostate cancer. It describes what's needed to be known after a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, including therapeutic options. It is written for the benefit, reading pleasure and learning of all men, and all women who have men in their lives. ------------------- Part I of the book (five chapters) addresses health habits and self-care, leading into nurturing the prostate and the benefits of nutritional supplements. ----------------------- Part II (five chapters) is about the Prostate, the major role it plays in your reproductive system, the diseases that can affect the prostate and your quality of life. ---------------------- Part III (10 chapters) deals with prostate cancer diagnosis, the steps taken to confirm that cancer is present, and its severity. --------------------- Part IV (seven chapters) deals with managing the condition, including your behavior tendencies, denial, breaking the news to family and friends, changing lifestyle and what the women in your life can do to help. -------------------- Part V (nine chapters) addresses the alternative treatment options, including the newest ones, after effects, and making the selection regarding treatment. --------------------- Part VI (nine chapters) addresses the surgery experience, hospital admission, treatment, what to expect, post-hospital care, subsequent visits to your urologist and finally recurrent cancer and salvage therapy. ------------------- Part VII includes the glossary, resources and index.

Book excerpt: Prostate Cancer Came A Knockin' A story of discovery, despair, determination, and divine intervention. Why are many men over 45 hesitant about getting checked for prostate cancer? Do they feel a rectal exam diminishes their "manhood?" Or do they view the procedure as a "violation" or an unnatural act? Unfortunately, I was one of those men who fell in the latter two categories, and in Prostate Cancer Came A Knockin', I share how my reluctance to see a doctor for a rectal exam nearly cost me my life and still may. Whatever men's reasoning is regarding not getting checked for prostate cancer, the consequences could prove deadly. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in men worldwide. In addition, per the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men; about 1 man in 8 will be diagnosed with it during his lifetime about 1 in 41 will die from the disease! And according to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Black men are twice as likely to die from the disease. I'm convinced I wouldn't be in my current situation had I known I could have taken a simple PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test for early prostate cancer detection. Unfortunately, I've paid a severe price for avoiding annual checkups. Due to my medical negligence, I've incurred $255,363.96 (and counting) in medical bills, had sixty-eight (68) hospital and doctor's office-related visits (and counting), 3 cystoscopies, and wore a catheter for six months. In addition, I've had a robotic prostatectomy and two nephrostomy tubes placed in me because my kidneys almost failed. All because of my misconceived notion about rectal exams. Hopefully, my missteps won't be yours. If you're a man over 45 and haven't been checked for prostate cancer, a treatable disease, and you end up dying because you neglected to see a doctor, what will the impact of your loss be on your loved ones? If that thought alone doesn't make you want to go and see a doctor about your prostate, then nothing probably will.
