Book excerpt: The Recycler ring was added to the Main Injector (MI) project in 1997 as means to recover the antiprotons remaining at the end of Tevatron stores and to serve as a second stage accumulator to raise the maximum stack current. This report describes an electron cooling system with substan-tially higher stack capacity than the Recycler stochastic cooling system which could be brought into operation toward the end of Run II. It is the major component of a program to double the de-sign Run II luminosity and should have a positive effect on integrated luminosity soon after turn-on. The upgrade potential is intended to meet the longer term needs of the Laboratory s luminosity upgrade program. The current experience with electron cooling is discussed to provide the ratio-nale for the choice of design parameters and to make clear the needs for additional development work. Both analytical and numerical development of the theory has been pursued to confirm that the limits in principle are well beyond foreseen need. The specific hardware described is not the only realization that has been considered, but it is in some ways the most conservative. The gen-eral scheme of using an electrostatic accelerator with high efficiency charge recovery was actively discussed in the 1980 s. Recent developments have served to build confidence in this approach, but, by whatever means realized, a Recycler electron cooling system will require significant extension of current practice. The Prospectus incorporates the ideas and understanding current 15 September 1998. Rapid progress toward a comprehensive development plan at this time means that its details will already differ from ideas now current.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the developments in accelerator physics and technology implemented at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the world’s most powerful accelerator for almost twenty years prior to the completion of the Large Hadron Collider. The book covers the history of collider operation and upgrades, novel arrangements of beam optics and methods of orbit control, antiproton production and cooling, beam instabilities and feedback systems, halo collimation, and advanced beam instrumentation. The topics discussed show the complexity and breadth of the issues associated with modern hadron accelerators, while providing a systematic approach needed in the design and construction of next generation colliders. This book is a valuable resource for researchers in high energy physics and can serve as an introduction for students studying the beam physics of colliders.

Book excerpt: Antiprotons in Fermilab's Recycler ring are cooled by a 4.3 MeV, 0.1A DC electron beam (as well as by a stochastic cooling system). The paper describes electron cooling improvements recently implemented: adjustments of electron beam line quadrupoles to decrease the electron angles in the cooling section and better stabilization and control of the electron energy.

Book excerpt: The Recycler Electron cooler was the first (and so far, the only) cooler working at a relativistic energy ([gamma] = 9.5). It was successfully developed in 1995-2004 and was in operation at Fermilab in 2005-2011, providing cooling of antiprotons in the Recycler ring. This paper describes the cooler, difficulties in achieving the required electron beam parameters and the ways to overcome them, cooling measurements, and details of operation.

Book excerpt: A 0.1-0.5 A, 4.3 MeV DC electron beam provides cooling of 8 GeV antiprotons in Fermilab's Recycler storage ring. The most detailed information about the cooling properties of the electron beam comes from drag rate measurements. We find that the measured drag rate can significantly differ from the cooling force experienced by a single antiproton because the area of effective cooling is significantly smaller than the physical size of the electron beam and is comparable with the size of the antiproton beam used as a probe. Modeling by the BETACOOL code supports the conclusion about a large radial gradient of transverse velocities in the presently used electron beam.

Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

This book was released on 1996-02-29 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity is the most important secondary energy source, the present production rate, mainly from thermal electric power stations, being of the order of 1.3 TW. However, the total capacity of primary and rechargeable batteries currently in use is the same as the output of the world's power stations. But present battery systems will not meet future needs for the economical storage of large amounts of electrical energy for vehicles, public transport, road levelling, solar energy utilisation, civil video and audio, terrestrial and space communications, etc. Current accumulators based on aqueous acid or alkali systems do not have sufficient output and, moreover, the materials employed (Pb, Cd, Ni) are environmental pollutants that require safe recycling. Further, stocks of these strategic metals are being rapidly depleted. This book discusses actual field results with novel systems, such as rechargeable lithium batteries, zinc/air cells, metal-free accumulators, graphite/carbon devices and others, including fuel cells. The book stresses that a universal electrochemical system is not feasible: the choice of any system must depend on the concrete field of application and must be taken in consideration of a large number of technical, economic and environmental circumstances.
