Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid technological advance is fast changing the nature of the relationship between the industrial countries and the advanced developing countries. This volume explores the meanings of this change close to home-as it affects the U.S.-Mexican relationship. What is the impact of the new technology on trade, investment, and labor flows between the United States and Mexico? Will development of a stronger Mexican industrial sector constitute an aid or a threat to specific U.S. industries? While demand for the middle-technology goods that countries such as Mexico can produce is growing in the United States, the debt crisis and the high dollar make procuring the high-technology capital goods necessary for this effort difficult and expensive. An overview essay explores the impact of technological change upon conflicts between the economic and political objectives of the two countries and ways in which the coordination of national politics might be maximized. The authors--representing a mix of government and business experience in both countries--offer specific recommendations on improving the efficiency of bilateral economic interaction, reducing the adjustment costs of technological change, and avoiding diplomatic tensions between the nations. Policy analysts examine the bilateral implications of the development strategies pursued by Mexico and the United States, the role played by domestic interest groups in the formation of these strategies, and the impact of technological change in the labor force along the border. Industry specialists examine changes in the automotive industry, the electric and electronics industries, bio-technological change in agriculture and nutrition, and the pharmaceutical and pharmochemical industries. Cathryn L. Thorup is the director of the Overseas Development Council's U.S.-Mexico Project, a policy-oriented, Washington-based forum for the exchange of ideas among key actors in the bilateral relationship. She is the author of many articles on conflict management in the U.S. Mexican policies toward Central America. Between 1980 and 1982, Ms. Thorup wrote regularly on international politics for the Mexican news magazine, Ranoes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the responses of unions and workers to regional integration and restructuring in the automobile industry in North and Central America. The focus is on the automobile industry in Mexico, which, because of its size and importance, is viewed as a strategic sector of the Mexican economy and was the focal point of talks between the US, Canada and Mexico during negotiations on NAFTA. Focusing on the period from 1980, John P. Tuman examines the changes implemented by firms to promote export production, he explores reasons for the variation in labour responses to restructuring, and he discusses the prospects for cross-border organizing and co-operation among automobile workers in Canada, the US and Mexico.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to speak of 'national development' in the 1990s? As a result of the tumultuous changes in global economic and political structures, scholars and policymakers specializing in the study of national development must reassess the interpretive models they have relied upon in the past. This book brings together essays by a distinguished group of social scientists that address the dilemmas facing development theory today. These essays, grounded in sociological research, reclaim the important role once played by sociological theory in development studies. The collection provides an overview of traditional theories of development, assessing their strengths and weaknesses, and identifies the new actors, issues, and processes that future analysis must address. The essays discuss the impact of technological innovations in production and commerce, the changing relations of states and markets, regional development inequalities, and the emergence of new social groups as participants in development processes. from the book Contents: 'Sociology and Development in the 1990s: Critical Challenges and Empirical Trends,' by A. Book excerpt: A penetrating study of the impact of NAFTA on Mexico's economic development, this is the only in-depth comparison of Mexican trade law before and after NAFTA, and of how considerations of trade with Mexico altered the provisions (from the earlier Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and the GATT) that formed the basis of the new trilateral project. Mr. von Mehren's book is a point of departure not only for understanding and applying the trade law common to North America but for assessing the likely course of historic negotiations still to come.
