Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2000 the book Robotic Milking, reflecting the proceedings of an International Symposium which was held in The Netherlands came out. At that time, commercial introduction of automatic milking systems was no longer obstructed by technological inadequacies. Particularly in a few west-European countries, systems were being installed at an increasing rate. However, it was recognised that the changeover from 'traditional' to automatic milking affected the farming operation, herd management and control of milk quality profoundly and that many of the implications were still unknown. So, new challenges in various fields of dairy farming and new research areas emerged. Since this previous International Symposium, much has happened. In general automatic milking has been adopted as a realistic alternative for milking in the 'traditional' milking parlour. Systems have gradually been improved and, maybe even more importantly, farmers have become more familiar with their potential and limitations, both technically and in herd management. The number of farms milking with an automatic milking system has worldwide increased to more than 2.200 by the end of 2003 . From 2000 to now, the level of scientific knowledge on various aspects and consequences of automatic milking has increased largely as well because of research efforts all over the world. A significant share of these efforts has been made within the framework of a EU-granted project on the implications of the introduction of automatic milking on dairy farms. Some seven research institutes and six industrial companies from six countries joined their expertise and experience in order to facilitate a widespread adoption of automatic milking without undesirable side effects. This book reflects the knowledge on automatic milking generated all over the world in the last few years. Its contents can therefore be regarded as the present state of knowledge in the field of automatic milking, for a better understanding."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protect yourself from machinery accidents, skin cancer, pesticide exposure, and so much more! Maintaining safety on the farm is a greater challenge than ever. Farmers are trying to expand their farm size and increase production while coping with labor shortages, adverse weather, and equipment problems. Agricultural Health and Safety gives you an in-depth look at these issues and presents effective new approaches to intervention and education for farm health and safety problems. Agricultural Health and Safety discusses new research, education, and prevention programs that have been tested from Maine to California and from Australia to Sweden. These important scientific and analytical studies were presented at the 1996 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Conference in Iowa. In addition to suggesting new ways to deal with the recognized physical hazards of farming, Agricultural Health and Safety discusses the often neglected role of mental health. It examines the role of stress in causing accidents and the risks of depression and suicide among agricultural workers. Agricultural Health and Safety considers a broad range of problems and effective interventions, including: insurance incentives for safe farms accident-prevention programs training for responding to farm emergencies cutting the risks of accident for farm children the ergonomics of milking teaching farm youth about sun safety the risks of exposure to pesticides, fertilizers, and other environmental hazards Agricultural Health and Safety offers practical information on the broad spectrum of health and safety hazards in the farm setting and outlines effective strategies for eliminating them. In addition, it opens new avenues for further study and research. This comprehensive book is an essential resource for agricultural safety and health researchers, program professionals, health care providers in farming communities, professors and students in agromedicine and agricultural programs, and agricultural workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Second Edition of a well-received book that reflects a fresh, integrated coverage of the concepts and scientific measurement of stress and welfare of animals including humans. This book explains the basic biological principles of coping with many forms of adversity. The major part of this work is devoted to explaining scientifically usable concepts in stress and welfare. A wide range of welfare indicators are highlighted in detail with examples being drawn from man and other species. The necessity for combining information from disciplines is emphasized with a one-health, one-welfare approach. This information forms the basis for a synthesis of new ideas. Among the issues covered are: - How brain and body systems regulate using feelings, physiological responses, behaviour and responses to pathology - Limits to adaptation - Assessing positive and negative welfare during both short-term and long-term situations - Ethical problems and suggested solutions A proper assessment of animal welfare is essential to take informed decisions about what is morally acceptable in terms of practice and in the development of a more effective legislation. This work encapsulates a very wide body of literature on scientific aspects of animal welfare and will thus prove a valuable asset for animal welfare scientists, psychologists, students and teachers of all forms of biology, behaviour, medicine, veterinary medicine and animal usage.

Book excerpt: The agricultural industry is dealing with enormous challenges across the globe, including the limited availability of arable lands and fresh water, as well as the effect of climate change. Machinery plays a crucial role in agriculture and farming systems, in order to feed the world’s growing population. In the last decade, we have witnessed major advances in agricultural machinery and technologies, particularly as manufacturers and researchers develop and apply various novel ways of automation as well as the data and information gathering and analyzing capabilities of their machinery. This book presents the state-of-the-art information on the important innovations in the agricultural and horticultural industry. It reviews and presents different novel technologies and implementation of these technologies to optimize farming processes and food production. There are four sections, each addressing a specific area of development. Section I discusses the recent development of farm machinery and technology. Section II focuses on water and irrigation engineering. Section III covers harvesting and post-harvest technology. Section IV describes computer modelling and simulation. Each section highlights current industry trends and latest research progress. This book is ideal for those working in or are associated with the fields of agriculture, agri-food chain and technology development and promotion.
