Book excerpt: The program covering the design and early technology development of Configuration E-7, a supersonic STOVL Fighter/Attack aircraft, is described. This aircraft uses the ejector principle to augment engine fan air for vertical lift. The initial design objectives selected in 1980 are listed and discussed. Some design considerations applicable to the propulsion concept and the chosen configuration are mentioned. The test program accomplished thus far, including wind tunnel models plus other test articles and activities, is outlined. The program has proceeded without major technological obstacles and a full-scale engine-powered model will soon be ready for testing.

This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. air transportation system is very important for our economic well-being and national security. The nation is also the global leader in civil and military aeronautics, a position that needs to be maintained to help assure a strong future for the domestic and international air transportation system. Strong action is needed, however, to ensure that leadership role continues. To that end, the Congress and NASA requested the NRC to undertake a decadal survey of civil aeronautics research and technology (R&T) priorities that would help NASA fulfill its responsibility to preserve U.S. leadership in aeronautics technology. This report presents a set of strategic objectives for the next decade of R&T. It provides a set of high-priority R&T challengesâ€"-characterized by five common themesâ€"-for both NASA and non-NASA researchers, and an analysis of key barriers that must be overcome to reach the strategic objectives. The report also notes the importance of synergies between civil aeronautics R&T objectives and those of national security.

Book Synopsis Preliminary Study of Vto Thrust Requirements for a V/Stol Aircraft with Lift Plus Lift/Cruise Propulsion by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Download or read book Preliminary Study of Vto Thrust Requirements for a V/Stol Aircraft with Lift Plus Lift/Cruise Propulsion written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary assessment was made of the VTO thrust requirements for a supersonic (Type B) aircraft with a Lift plus Lift/Cruise propulsion system. A baseline aircraft with a takeoff gross weight (TOGW) of 13 608 kg (30,000 lb) was assumed. Pitch, roll, and yaw control thrusts (i.e., the thrusts needed for aircraft attitude control in the flight hover mode) were estimated based on a specified set of maneuver acceleration requirements for V/STOL aircraft. Other effects (such as installation losses, suckdown, reingestion, etc.), which add to the thrust requirements for VTO were also estimated. For the baseline aircraft, the excess thrust required for attitude control of the aircraft during VTO and flight hover was estimated to range from 36.9 to 50.9 percent of the TOGW. It was concluded that the total thrust requirements for the aircraft/propulsion system are large and significant. In order to achieve the performance expected of this aircraft/propulsion system, reductions must be made in the excess thrust requirements. Turney, G. E. and Allen, J. L. Book excerpt: This book is designed to fill a professional vacuum in the new field of advance, high-angle, vectored stealth aircraft. The subject matter presented in the volume has never before been investigated and presented as a unified field of study because it covers entirely new fields and because specialized fragments of this unified field are scattered throughout literature in specific problems. The book is of interest to aeronautical and mechanical engineers, electrical and control engineers, aerospace industry, USAF, US Navy, NASA, pilots and instructors.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased interest in V/STOL aircraft has led to a renewed interest in propulsion systems for these aircraft and a need to examine and formulate military requirements. The influence of the aircraft installation on the design of propulsion systems is very significant and much study is required before aircraft development can be initiated. The influence of noise requirements on engine and aircraft designs is also commanding increasing attention not only because of the awareness by both civil and military authorities over problems affecting the environment we live in, but also from the economic point of view. The high cost of aircraft and engine development, and decreased military purchases encourage consideration of civil derivatives of aircraft and engines as a means of lowering the cost of ownership. The data base provided by V/STOL propulsion system component research and the technology base obtained by operating experience with V/STOL vehicles provides an insight to the future trend of V/STOL vehicles.
