Book excerpt: Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation or P.N.F. is a technique of treatment by neuro-muscular facilitation using proprioceptive sensation with philosophy that all human being have untapped existing potential. The purpose of this text is to explain the principles, techniques and methods of using the P.N.F. to the newly fling birds of physiotherapy and occupational therapy. This book contains 9 chapters i.e. Introduction, Procedural Basics, Techniques of P.N.F., Neck P.N.F. Patterns, Trunk P.N.F. Patterns, Scapular P.N.F. Patterns, Upper Limb P.N.F. Patterns, Pelvic P.N.F. Patterns and Lower Limb P.N.F. Patterns.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Medicine - Neurology, Psychiatry, Addiction, grade: B, University of New Orleans, language: English, abstract: Introduction. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation refers to a method of hastening or promoting neuromuscular functioning mechanisms by stimulating its proprioceptors. This method of treatment is functions on the belief that all individuals including those with disabilities have varied existing potentials. Various motion combinations are used to facilitate neuromuscular mechanism. These include primitive, postural and righting reflexes. The motion combinations employed include passive movements, eccentric, isometric and concentric contractions (Alter 2004). One of the philosophies regulating the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is mobilizing individuals’ potentials through the provision of intensive training, patients’ active participation in planning and provision of care, and promotion of self-training. Furthermore, the health care professionals should promote positive approach including provision of care free of pain, provision of direct and indirect treatment among others (Hoeger et al 2008). However, PNF techniques functions on several principles including, resistance, inhibition, facilitation, and irradiation reflexes. Facilitation techniques increase motor neurons excitation increasing stimuli within the neuromuscular neurons which cause depolarization or recruitment of extra motor neurons. Furthermore, inhibitory techniques decrease the excitation of the motor neurons leading to hyperpolarization of these neurons hence decrease in the amount of neurons which are actively discharging. Inhibition and facilitation cannot be separated because they work synergistically to one another. Inhibitory techniques increases flexibility through the inhibition of motor neurons of the antagonists muscles hence relaxation and reduced active resistance to the agonists muscle movement (Alter 2004). Furthermore, facilitation and inhibitory techniques creates muscular resistance characterized by active contractions. Irradiation reflexes increases spread of neuromuscular excitations throughout the central nervous system causing contractions in the synergistic muscles. In addition, stretch reflexes increase the effectiveness of these techniques by producing varied excitation in the motor neurons causing relaxation of the muscles under different conditions. Furthermore, PNF techniques employ the techniques of active contractions (Hoeger et al 2008).

Book excerpt: The approach here is based on the concepts set out by Dr. Herman Kabat and taught by Margaret Knott, and this second edition adds many new illustrations including demonstrations of the techniques and pictures of actual patient treatment. The gait section has been expanded with an introduction to normal components and photos of patient treatment. The mat section has also been enlarged and includes illustrations of patient treatment.

Book excerpt: Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation is a common practice implemented to enhance the range of motion throughout the neurological and musculoskeletal aspect of the body, though little research has been performed to evaluate theories behind it. The aim of this manuscript is to evaluate possible mechanisms, proposed theories, physiological effects and techniques that fall within its scope. The manuscript incorporates various maneuvers implemented within this technique that aim to imitate the effects of facilitation in order to increase the response of neuromuscular mechanism, various types of facilitation techniques that are also implemented in addition to the neuromuscular facilitation techniques are for instance; visual cue, maximal resistance, stimulation by stretch reflex, manual contact and verbal instructions. It could also be successfully deployed for developing normal range of movement in the affected affected musculoskeletal tissues. A detailed diagrammatic representations of patterns performed in the proprioceptive training depicts the relevance of Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, with potential benefits, only when if performed correctly and systematically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facilitated Stretching, Fourth Edition, examines techniques and guidelines for PNF stretches in a variety of settings. Stretches are demonstrated on a treatment table, mat on the floor, chair, cable-pulley machine, and weightlifting bench. Stretches are grouped according to each joint, and the majority of the stretches include both a partner stretch version and a self-stretch version. As in previous editions, specific routines are included for cycling, golf, running, swimming, throwing and racket sports, and now ice hockey. It also includes general stretches for everyday use, plus stretches for those with “rusty hinges.” These ready-made stretching routines make it easy to incorporate facilitated stretching into a workout regimen and take the guesswork out of organizing a stretching routine to match the needs of a specific sport.
