The Wateree River cradles it to the east, and the Congaree River borders the south and southwest. Virginia settlers discovered this rich land over 250 years ago. They became wealthy planters and accumulated large land tracts, creating plantation systems that sustained the economy. From 1783 until 1820, cotton was the principal cash crop, and the slave population increased tremendously and played a vital role in the development of agriculture and the economy in the area.

Book excerpt: Get inspiration for finding your path from one man's true story of life in the Deep South, a memoir lauded by Coretta Scott King's cousin, Christine Jackson, as "a book everyone should read!" Growing up, Mark Epstein had dreams of playing basketball, but his lack of motivation sidelined him. Inspired after he read true civil rights stories about Black Americans, Epstein's secret dream was born. Personal heartbreak drove him to a new life in Charleston, South Carolina, where he found his mission to improve the world through sports. In this inspiring memoir of an educator, Epstein shares the magic of befriending some of the greatest athletes in history as well as students and parents in the public school system. From desperate circumstances to a twenty-seven-year career in education and coaching, They Call Me Pathfinder is the story of how one lost soul from Massachusetts found his way to a life that became an American dream come true.

Book excerpt: In:1st Corinthians chapter 13 verse 11It states: When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.Truth is when I became a man at eighteen I didn't know what to do. Ya see all my life I was raised to believe that to be a man you have to be brave, strong, a protector, a provider, and never show weakness or emotion but most of all never cry.As I think about that today, I remember the words of Malcolm X "You've been had" "You've been took!" "You've been hoodwinked""Bamboozled! led astray! Run amuck!" "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us."Everything I learned about being a man was a lie. So where do I go from here?

Book Synopsis One Kind of Freedom by : Roger L. Ransom
Download or read book One Kind of Freedom written by Roger L. Ransom and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-07-16 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the economic history classic One Kind of Freedom reprints the entire text of the first edition together with an introduction by the authors and an extensive bibliography of works in Southern history published since the appearance of the first edition. The book examines the economic institutions that replaced slavery and the conditions under which ex-slaves were allowed to enter the economic life of the United States following the Civil War. The authors contend that although the kind of freedom permitted to black Americans allowed substantial increases in their economic welfare, it effectively curtailed further black advancement and retarded Southern economic development. Quantitative data are used to describe the historical setting but also shape the authors' economic analysis and test the appropriateness of their interpretations. Ransom and Sutch's revised findings enrich the picture of the era and offer directions for future research.
